i want to wish you a happy park and recreation month. it's national park and recreation month. the board passed a resolution declaring the month of july of recreations and park of san francisco. i want to highlight events from the month. at the board of supervisors hearing that that resolution was passed the board recognized 47 teachers that participated in this stewart program. we were thrilled to present these educator with certified of an appreciation and thank them for their great work. our volunteer division and our gardeners to cultivate the next generation. a big shout out to kimberly keefr who run the team for the recreation and park department. last week we sell bralted the yacht harbor and it was a fantastic event. other upcoming events, also as commissioner brul noted, park play ground, we should coordinate these things before we get up here. >> it was saying twice. >> saturday july 20, this is a big -- we had a lot of support from this from the water front community who really drove this project. of san francisco parks alliance has been an important person in adding

rec and park will issue and manage rfps for recreation and parka meanttionv. the puc will issue and manage all rfps for watershed management and rec and park will be responsible for the rfp for the potential use of the lake merced boat house, but will work cooperatively with the puc to find a tenant and user who is agreeable to both parties. that concludes the main portions of the four sections of the m-o-u. this agreement will be a significant step forward in the joint management of the lake merced tract. the clear delineation of responsibilities in the m-o-u allows each agency to focus on core competencies in relation to the lake which is watershed and water quality for the puc and recreation landscape and natural areas maintenance by rec and park. but the framework that this agreement provides the puc and rpd can manage the tract more effectively, preserve the lake's critical roles and emergency water supply, maximize its potential as a destination for water-based recreation. of note, the puc commission unanimously approved this m-o-u and forwarded it to yo

types of spaces may include recreation, parks and water landings to name a few. another key policy was to locate open spaces in major waterfront destination at streets that connect back into the city's neighborhoods something you heard distinctly from the city's planning director. the goal of doing this and adjacent to major development sites and enhance the viability of the projects and in front of the cruise terminal and adjacent to the warrior's stiedium or pier 70 and helping the park to distribute the spaces equally along the waterfront. this graphic shows where we find -- i'm sorry. this graphic shows where we regularly find a major public space along the length of the waterfront. you see the ups and downs in the sequence of spaces as you go along. the port -- it helps us when we did the plan it helped understand how much open space should go in what area, how we treat each neighborhood in an equitable neighborhood and how to develop those and differentiates what exists and what is coming on line and street space and other uses as well. the port now has abo

given the nature for recreational growth and the transportation needs we're working not only with the mta and dp w to include the transportation services for how we assess the waterfront in the surrounding areas and peter will talk about that in a second. so quickly what are the lessons of the work and where we are headed. we know that the waterfront are going to offer more opportunity for public and recreation that takes care of the neighborhood needs. it takes care of the authentic care of the waterfront. it was a blue print integrated with transportation oriented neighborhood needs and helps us to accept some of the recreational growth. now we're going to work on the implementation. we're dealing with a large number of those sites and all at the same time. all sites carry out goals for the expletive mix of ice and protecting maritime destroy and extending the neighborhoods to the water. since the rehabilitate of pier one and the ferry building on the national register the port has made strides in rehabilitating it's resources. the plan and assess element and the b cbc plan together

the steps we've taken in recent years and the work we're doing provide very much recreational benefits. there has been some concern and it's been expressed lately that the city does not have an overview vision. i think part of the raison is that the plan has been adopted over 15 years ago. we often get this with the downtown plan it was nearly thirty years old. but we still think it's important to honor the plan and the work and the same is true of the waterfront. it's 15 years in planning terms is not a long time. we tend to get a little bit im35ish9 but in terms of implementing a plan 15 years is not that long. its important for me and you to honor the work that creates those plans. i won't go into detail but it establishes a 5 sub areas along the waterfronts. it looks in dlafl over the waterfront and the details over the districts and those 5 sub areas. excuse me. one minute arrest plaintiff. and i think it's important to look at the combination of the waterfront plan that was done and the plans done subject to that. it goes back to the time before the plan was adopted and certainly

(applause) >> these are the unsung heroes that don't get recognized very often, but they are what make our parks work and look the way they do and we are so lucky we have one of the most beautiful parks now right in the middle of pacific heights. but there are two people -- i want to thank a few folks. stefan franz as well, and our friends from prozac that represent our parks department and represent all that we believe in in our neighborhood. thank you for all that you do. and i really in particular today want to single out two folks. phil mentioned the friends of lafayette park and we have certificates of honor for them. but this playground behind us would not have happened without one of the best friends of parks groups in our city of san francisco, and that's the friends of lafayette park. they raised hundreds of thousands of dollars. the plaques are around here and all the people that contributed to it, but there are two people that had the biggest leadership in this, and i want

. >> the recreation center and there is a playground that you probably might even know exists if you are facing the rec center. and actually much smaller, and old, and the play grounds to the right and so we be upgrading that and begin the programs for the use of that site in a few years, in 2015. margaret hayward, spoke about briefly, this is a complex site for us and really exciting, the site as you may know is really choped up right now. and there are buildings in the middle and there is a trailer that was actually never intended to be a permanent building and it has been there for i believe 25 years. and the usable life of it is essentially gone, however it houses a lot of the infrastructure for the department of emergency management and so this is going to be a very interesting and challenging project for the department to navigate how we address the department of emergency management issues not just the infrastructure in terms of all of the technology but the requirements around the perimeter and there is always secure it and all of those pieces will be layered on to obviously

we've started another program with the recreation and parks department. they obviously have been very successful in getting public bonds since we had the 2000 clean and safe pond and the 2008 bond which is $185,000 and when you look at the other funding sources from states grants, that brings them up to 750,000,000 since 2000. there's things that we found so we're working with them to create a fund to zero in on these particular issues or things that need maintenance of accessible features and working with them hand and hand to hand select these projects that had the greatest need that aren't benefiting from these projects that are in the bond. so we're being given half a million this year and $1.5 million next year and the park department is getting matching funds for $1.1 million during this period. and just to tell you a few of them is -- one is the sharon arts stud s studio. we need to clean up how you get into the building. the golden gate park senior center which had accessible improvements done way in the early 1980s and they need to be brought up
