the american red cross has 12 volunteers out here. many more spontaneous volunteers are still out here this morning. these volunteers came down to help last night, are in no way affiliated with the red cross. they started arriving last night and immediately got to work. a lot of organizing has to be done in a situation, the food and clothes brought in by the community needed to be sorted. that's one of the reasons why at this hour the red cross is asking for monetary donations. log on and send money in care of the san bruno fire effort. women dropped off diapers and baby formula, one of the women heard the loud explosion last night and as she watched the continuous coverage of what was going on she came down to donate. we also spoke to a man who heard the explosion and th took some action. >> we are a tight community. everybody knows each other and everybody went to school together and played sports together. when you see your neighbor's homes on fire and you know them you can pick out our friend's houses it's sad but it makes you wan

we have done training around the city a partnership with the red cross. one challenge was people showing up. we did advertising and people didn't necessarily come to the presentations. because it requires more than putting up a sign and it requires more contact than our department has. people in the building have to encourage their neighbors to come to these trainings. back to disaster kits. we have a grant from the hospital council to purchase disaster buckets from the red cross. it's not many. our focus is on low income families. family and child care providers. we are looslooking at organizeds like day care centers and providing them with supplies. so they're available after a disaster. that's one way we are addressing that. >> did you have a follow up to that? >> you keep saying turn off the gas. i've tried to get a hold of pg and e. a lot of the meters have frozen nuts or whatever you want to it. i tried to get pg and e to look at the one in my house and says it's impossible to shut off. how do we get pg and e to address the fact the old meters in fr

we also have the red cross truck here.have information this morning that they helped out about 38 people at the two shelters they had set up last night. they say that a lot of people ended up going with family and friends. we're also, if we can pan over here, waiting for a press conference to start to get new information. we're believing this may be the lieutenant governor coming here. that could happen any minute. a lot of people coming by wanting answers. we spoke with one woman a couple minutes ago, she said she had a couple relatives up there and hasn't heard from them. she is trying to get information on them. also people coming here wanting to know, as sad as it sounds, wanting to know if their home is still standing. they are wanting answers and the red cross can't answer that. oes is here, firefightering trying to learn what is going on. state farm, the insurance company, will be out in this lot helping out the people they cover trying to get them back on their feet. certainly a lot of activity this morning. a lot

you can see behind me the red cross truck is here. they are certainly helping many of those people who had their homes either completely burned to the ground or had a lot of damage done to it. you can see some of the video there. dozens of homes that burned and more that are damaged. one person confirmed dead and dozens hurt. many people taking themselves to the hospital. some with severe burns, others with smoke inhalation, some in nearby hospital, others as far as san francisco. saint francis burn unit was treating some of the people last night. this is going to be a pretty difficult search operation, certainly not rescue but a search operation as cadaver dogs go through some of the rubble this morning. mainly, that's because many of the people if there are any left inside pretty much would have been incinerated. this fire was so hot, i was here last night that it just eliminated the houses almost instantly. you see skeletons, chimneys, ironically about the only things left standing sit on the ground n top of foundations. certainly

san bruno is part of the bay area red cross, and, of course, the bay area red cross is housed here in san francisco. we had a pretty significant mutual aid response to our neighboring county. we had, specifically from san francisco, over 15 volunteers respond last night. we had over 125 volunteers either on site or in rows -- en route. we are staffing personnel at the various eoc's. we have said seven or eight of our emergency response vehicles to the area, and will begin damage assessment of each individual home to assess the needs of the victims of the fire. we have caseworkers who will start those interviews beginning today, and we are also sending from the six counties our disaster mental health service specialist to help out in that area. it people are concerned about the well-being of their family or friends, they can register themselves at our safe and well website, or they can call 1-800- red-cross and file their information about their concerned parties there. mayor newsom: appreciate that. you have another site that was set up for city employees. >> yes, so for san francisco

we gave a million dollars to the red cross. we take active role in nert training. provide fund to help them. i was surprised about involved with michael's group another outstanding program. for us to engage in disaster recovery from the standpoint things will be better when we get there. we provide what's called public safety training. that's if you have a wire down or a gas leak what do you do as a citizen? as a neighbor? as a community. we provide that training from the standpoint of safety. that's the bottom line of what we are trying to do is to create a safe environment. the folks that are available to provide the training across the city here but we provide it to emergency responders, local law enforcement, fire services. we provide it to community groups themselves. if it's a community group a safe group and/or nert group we will provide that training for individuals. the other as an organization for us to take care of business during an emergency. for us to take care of your needs to get power on, we have to have aggressive emergency response planning for o
