i do work with the redding rancheria. local rancheria. every once in a while they do a wintu class and we always get the book out here and that's available for their students to look at. and this is another interesting one. it's the history of indians of shasta and what i find most helpfuls is done chronologically so what it does is -- we can look and it references any article that appeared in our local newspaper, on the subject as native americans. so sometimes i get questions, i want to know what was happening in 1870 with -- in terms of native americans and so we can open this up and go right to that time period and we can see what was happening from the newspaper's perspective. we do have the map which is a key part of the election because when i'm helping people i can show the map and show where redding is located and shasta county is located and it's a nice depiction of where all the tribes in california are actually low -- located. so the library helps support preserving the wintu culture with this collection. these materials are a

that really in the 1870's , spelled the end of shasta when ed the townd develops of redding about five miles east of here. the town really became a ghost town around the turn of the last century when, in the early 1900's, there were maybe only two or three businesses left in shasta. >> we continue our look at the history of redding california were people here about earl behrens who served for 30 years as a political editor for the san francisco chronicle. starting up with growing up in a small, middle sized townre like dding, it was a good learning ground for someone who would have been a journalist. as he got older, he received many accolades, many awards. he received recognition, but probably the most important was he received the presidential medal of freedom in 1970 by then-president richard nixon. native earl behrens served as editor of the chronicle. we learned more about his life. >> here at the house in california, over the last two years, i have been privileged to study the people who actually lived if this home. one of which was earl behrens. earl was born here in shasta coun

the flood of 1940, downtown redding was completely underwater. taken in downtown redding. act then, it was a wild river that turned into a giant lake. all of that flooding did cause problems but amazingly enough, february of 90 teen 40 two july, five short months, they got all cleaned up and they were ready to start holding the dam itself. ony brought gravel and sand a 9.6 mile long conveyor built -- conveyor belt that had to be built. all of that material was brought to the dam site and mixed together at the base of what would become the dam and that concrete was delivered in eight yard buckets. buckets were on seven cable ways radiating out, delivering concrete. as the concrete was delivered, gentlemen like this man here would pick up a big compactor in his job was to pack the concrete down and make sure there were no air bubbles or pockets there. it's actually a stiff, dry mix. big airnd up with a pocket, it will end up collapsing in on itself. his job was incredibly important, but imagine doing that all day long. they were paid big bucks -- $.90 an hour or $7.20 a day

continuing our coverage on redding's literary culture, we speak with author steve callen about his time as a game warden in the state of california. >> i group up as the son of a game warden, and so the first -- my teenage years i spent a lot of the time riding on patrol with my dad. so i had all these great adventures working with him as well, so that's where the name of the book came. and then later on i became a fish and game warden myself, and then i continued writing stories about my generation of fish and wildlife officers. so the book is called "the game warden's son." being with my dad during those years when he was a game warden was like having a storybook childhood. i did things that most kids would dream of. he was, when he started out, he was on what they call marine patrol, and his duty was patrolling the channel, the california channel islands which are fantastic, ask they're anywhere from, like, 26 miles across the sea like the song says or clear out in, you know, way out in the ocean. so i got to go on these excursions or these patrols out into the, out into the channel

we have the redding intent and are trying to preserve the culture. we see their history all around us if we're out at shasta lake and shasta dam in particular. there are lots of controversies. it's been a rough history, and so it's important that we learn about this history so we don't repeat some of mistakes that we have made pick pics today we'reg to look at the california indian library collection. it's part of our local history collection which is called the blogbogs collection which is nad after mae boggs and it's an important piece of the local history collection. so the calvin indian library collection began at uc berkeley. it was then decided to disperse the collection out by the state to 20 different libraries. and so what happened was the collection was divided up based geographically. so what we got here in shasta county was the information on the native americans from our particular area. in particular we focus on the wind too. also the outlying tribes. what are the reason this is such an important collection, is because it consists of it
