i have been in redding 20 years. i have always known redding is an agricultural area. shasta county is an agricultural county. we have a lot of great photos of agricultural scenes and we thought it was time to do a big exhibition that celebrates the history and modern practices of agriculture in our area. standing one are win to land. -- wintu land. before european settlers got here, the native population lived in tune with the land or they did not cultivate crops in the way we think of growing crops. they cultivated the natural environment to their benefit. back tow willow trees make baskets. but their population size was right for the area. this particular spot was an amazing salmon fishery at the time. they lived off the land and lived well before white people got here in 1844. before that, people had been driving cattle and exploring through, but they had not actually settled. wintu population and other populations were heavily influenced by that. we want to celebrate the fact that these people were here and used the land. mortar.a wintu copper the baskets are for

i do work with the redding rancheria. local rancheria. every once in a while they do a wintu class and we always get the book out here and that's available for their students to look at. and this is another interesting one. it's the history of indians of shasta and what i find most helpfuls is done chronologically so what it does is -- we can look and it references any article that appeared in our local newspaper, on the subject as native americans. so sometimes i get questions, i want to know what was happening in 1870 with -- in terms of native americans and so we can open this up and go right to that time period and we can see what was happening from the newspaper's perspective. we do have the map which is a key part of the election because when i'm helping people i can show the map and show where redding is located and shasta county is located and it's a nice depiction of where all the tribes in california are actually low -- located. so the library helps support preserving the wintu culture with this collection. these materials are a

the flood of 1940, downtown redding was completely underwater. taken in downtown redding. act then, it was a wild river that turned into a giant lake. all of that flooding did cause problems but amazingly enough, february of 90 teen 40 two july, five short months, they got all cleaned up and they were ready to start holding the dam itself. ony brought gravel and sand a 9.6 mile long conveyor built -- conveyor belt that had to be built. all of that material was brought to the dam site and mixed together at the base of what would become the dam and that concrete was delivered in eight yard buckets. buckets were on seven cable ways radiating out, delivering concrete. as the concrete was delivered, gentlemen like this man here would pick up a big compactor in his job was to pack the concrete down and make sure there were no air bubbles or pockets there. it's actually a stiff, dry mix. big airnd up with a pocket, it will end up collapsing in on itself. his job was incredibly important, but imagine doing that all day long. they were paid big bucks -- $.90 an hour or $7.20 a day

the blood of 1940, downtown redding was completely underwater. back then, it was a wild river that turned into a giant lake. you can imagine all that flooding did cause problems here at the jobsite. amazingly enough, february of 1940, two july, they got that all cleaned up and were ready to start building the dam it self. they brought gravel in on a conveyor belt that had to be built of course. all of that material was brought here to the dam site along with cement and water mix together at the base of what would become the dam and that concrete was delivered in eight yard buckets. they delivered concrete to a series of a blocks at any given time. as the concrete was delivered, gentleman like the joe chestnut here would pick up a big compactor and pack that concrete down, make sure there were no air bubbles. you can see it is not very fluid, so if you end up with a big air pocket and there, that will collapse in on it self. his job was incredibly important. imagine what it would be like doing that all day long. they were paid big bucks, $.90 per
