thanks for joining us, i'm reggie aqui. six fires tearing through the north bay have now engulfed more than 81,000 acres and here's the number that is so hard to comprehend. zero containment the. vice president mike pence just spoke in sacramento. he said president trump has approved a major disaster declaration for california to assist in the response to the wildfires. so that means fema will mobilize and provide additional equipment and resources. >> we will continue to work very closely with governor brown, with the state of california, with each one of you to support your courageous first responders and come alongside the families affected through loss of persons and property. >> vice president went on to say that cal fire is inspiring the nation through its tireless work. >>> now give you a closer look at where those fires are burning. napa county is grouping three of these fires into a larger one. the atlas fire, tubbs fire and partrick fire now being called the napa complex fire. those three are marked in red on this

. >> reporter: reggie and the update is jaw dropping. it is a staggering number of people that are currently missing right now. the sonoma county sheriff's department says they have reports of 670 people they have been able to locate 110 of those. they are hoping that bad cell phone service here in this area is to blame. there are 73 cell phone towers down in the state of california. they have assembled a 30-member missing person's team. the sheriff's department says that this is still a life-saving operation and they are telling everyone living in sonoma county if you do not have to be here, go now. they say the best route is to drive south through marin county. >> yeah, i can't stress this enough. if you're in an evacuation zone, you cannot come home. we are not letting anybody into any of the neighborhoods that have been evacuated or burned. they're all sealed off. we have had very few problems with looters. we made an arrest last night and two two arrests the night before. they weren't arrested for looting, we suspect they were. we w

look at those flames, reggie. >> this is incredible. and just a few minutes ago, we saw some pictures, live pictures from santa rosa, where our colleague, amy hollyfield, is now reporting, and she was talking about how the fire had jumped 101 and there were so many folks who were trying to get out of that area. so far, it has been an orderly process, but of course, it's only 3:53 in the morning, and there are a lot of people who are still waiting and wondering if they're going to have to evacuate, so we're going to be watching that closely. i want to get to the phone with valia ramos, a supervisor in napa county. thank you so much for joining us. can you tell us what is happening right now in your area? >> thank you so much for having us and for spreading the message. right now we remain in evacuation mode because this is not a fire that we are fighting at this moment. it's unpredictable. the winds are not helping us. we remain in strict evacuation mode at this time. we have four principal fires that we are focusing on from a life safet

reggie and jessica, back to you. >> tiffany wilson live for us from napa. that was difficult to listen to. they've been through fire on and it's been difficult as for people in napa and sonoma counties. to hear him say this is the worst he's seen. this is a real disaster we're facing in the north bay right now. it's 4:15 in the morning and what we can tell you there are five fires that are burning but that number could add up. it's still dark outside. we can't see the full extent of what's happening and can't tell you anything about containment of the fires. it's just too early. >> we heard the napa county supervisor moments ago saying if you have a loved one to call them and that's the concern, of course, because people are still sleeping. it is the middle of the night. it's dark. it's hard to see how much of the area is being impacted. you can see the flames but which homes are maybe nearby those areas and so that's their concern right now is just getting people out. you heard her say we are in crisis mode right now and that's, of course, napa and sonoma

. >> reporter: right, reggie. i would hate to guess at this point how many homes have been lost in here, but it's safe to say i would say dozens. look at this one behind me here, we're on stony mountain circle, just one of many unfortunately that are in his condition, still smoldering. every so often, jacob can show us in the distance, see a plume of black smoke. and, unfortunately, we're realizing that that's probably another home that's going up as we speak. there are firefighters in here, but it seems they're pretty much powerless to save the homes that are already burning. and they're really just focusing on trying to save the houses next to them here on stony mountain circle. we can show you this house right next to that one that was burned to the ground is still standing. we can only speculate it looks like there was some effort here to take down the garage door. they punched some holes in the walls. the front door has some holes in it. this could be, perhaps, an effort by firefighters to try to make sure th

. >>> okay, reggie, speaking of fires, there's a big fire happening in southern california right now that crews are still battling. it's about 350 acres and the "l.a. times" is reporting that an 18-year-old motorcyclist actually crashed into a tree which sparked the fire. it happened yesterday afternoon. it's burning in the cleveland national forest which is located just northeast of the city of san diego. the motorcyclist had only minor injuries. there is a handful right now of homes evacuated in riverside county. >> it's a little unnerving. you have to respect all the fires happening in napa and all around. there's so much that's been going on lately. so keeping that in mind, how fast that went through. we're not being dumb but we don't want to be over panicked at the same time. >> absolutely a lot of fires in our state this fire season. and right now this one is only 15% contained. natasha? >> jessica, thank you. >>> testimony is set to resume monday in the trial after man charged with the murder of kate steinle. the federal park ranger whose stolen gun killed her took the stand y

i'm reggie aqui.t least five fires burning as we speak. >> we want to show you where the fires are burning now. let's show you the map. all across the north bay, those fires are raging. some of the strongest ones and the most evacuees we've heard from at this point, santa rosa, calistoga, and we continue to get information several areas burning. we're working to confirm if there are any fires burning in lake county. these are the ones confirmed on the map for you and there are hundreds of people evacuated at this point, hundreds even in just one shelter. >> we know there are a number of structures burning including homes. that number we can't tell you now because it is just too early to have a complete number. video of napa county along the silverado trail between napa and you can see a home engulfed right now. this is the scene repeated throughout the north bay this morning. >> silverado trail where all those wineries are, there are homes along the way. it is such a famous stretch through napa county

>> reporter: hi, good morning, reggie. the latest information we have there are three fires burning here around the city of santa rosa. that would be the tubbs, the nuns, and the partrick fires. the tubbs fire has grown to just under 30,000 acres. the nuns fire still continuing to threaten the southern part of santa rosa and we learned this morning there is some damage to the oakmont neighborhood. and then they're dealing with that partrick fire and that has grown to 1,900 acres. and hopefully you're looking at video here of some of the volunteers getting ready from the sonoma fair grounds getting ready to go out today expecting it to be a tough day as some new red flag warnings could come in to play. all of this while so many first responders deal with the loss of their own homes. >> yes, so myself, several of my friends, i understand we have at least seven of us from santa

. >> reporter: good morning, reggie. kate steinle's dad will be back on the stand today, he was the first witness called by the prosecution yesterday. jim steinle held back tears as he described his final moments with his daughter who was shot while they were talking together on pier 14. during opening statements the prosecutor picked up the gun that killed steinle. diana garcia told the jury that jose ines garcia zarate shot kate steinle. >> the charge is murder and in this particular context it's in the second degree and what we need to show is that he intended to fire that gun. >> reprter: seconds after the gun was fired garcia zarate threw it in the bay. his defense team contends that he picked it up wrapped in a cloth, fired it accidentally and got rid of it to make it shot shooting. the gun have been stolen from a federal ranger a couple days prior to steinle's death. the trial is expected to resume around 10:00 this morning. live in san francisco, tiffany wilson, abc 7 news. >>> and if you are just joining us it i

>> reporter: good morning, natasha and reggie. avenue is still closed here at lakewood drive to north capital avenue, but firefighters are doing their job. they put this fire out here at this kfc. they're now looking for hot spots and putting some water on any places they see a little bit of smoke coming out of the area. check out the flames from earlier this morning around 4:30. this fire was going. so firefighters called for two alarms. they were able to get it under control just after 5:00. they went in the building after to make sure the fire wasn't smoldering in the ceiling attic space. this was an unusual time for a fire to start, the middle of the night, and not in the kitchen. >> it was unoccupied at the time. there were no people displaced, and the business was not in action. so the only concerns is the fire did start in the dining area, which is somewhat unusual. we're investigating origin and cause. >> reporter: no other buildings or homes in the area damaged this is obviously going to have an impact on the people who w

[ inaudible ]. >> that's pretty evident. >> reporter: pretty evident indeed. the air canada flight from montreal had received permission to land from sfo when air traffic control tried to make a change. this he repeated the instructions five times and without a response a supervisor used a flashing red light to alert the crew to go around. air canada jet landed safely just before 9:30 never having acknowledged the orders. you will remember air canada was involved in another incident at sfo back in july. at that time an air canada plane came within 59 feet of crash landing into other planes at sfo. as for this latest incident air canada told abc 7 news upon landing the crew was informed the tower had attempted unsuccessfully to contact the aircraft, however, the message was not received by th

. >> reporter: good morning, natasha and reggie. yeah, we're just right outside of napa and ash continues to fall from the sky. we've got a glow here in the hills just east of us. you can see that there is smoke coming off that mountain there or that hill there and they have got some flames going on right now. it looks like those flames are about to crest that ridge. of course we've been watching it all morning long. check out this video we have from an hour ago. you could see significant flames in the skyline wilderness park area. the good news, there aren't any homes in this area but obviously firefighters want to get those flames out. across the highway an advisory evacuation has been issued. about 45 minutes ago a long line of police cars rolled by headed toward the city of napa. i saw several different agencies that can help with road closures, evacuations and patrolling neighborhoods. new evacuation centers are also popping up. one was set up at american canyon high school with cots, blankets, food, water and wi-fi. the race g

reggie and jessica. an update on the firefighter who was injured out here, he fell down a ravine about 50 feet and we were told that he has a broken wrist and some cuts to his face. i was just told that they have a medical helicopter that is coming to the scene that's going to take that firefighter out and get him the medical treatment that he needs. also have another update on the other aircraft that is going to arrive here at dawn. this is going to take place as soon as we get sunlight out here, they will attack this from the sky. they have four helicopters lined up and two air tankers, that's going to help them get these flames out. this is bear creek canyon behind us. you can see that the flames over the last hour or so have started to sit down, it looks like burning coals rather than the big flames shooting up the trees. that's the good news, firefighters say they're going to be aggressive. >> as you can see right now from the -- what we saw before, the fire is not as active as it was so we're tryin

. >> reporter: reggie, yeah, we were actually on our way to the silverado country club in the heart ofine country, one of the hardest hit areas, but as you can see behind me given all of these flashing lights the roadway, the main one to that country club, is closed this morning. we were told of course being the media we can access this area, however, according to highway patrol and police officers we have met this morning, we were told there are a lot of downed power lines, not to mention low hanging power lines, so our safety is at risk. yesterday the silverado country club of course you have seen probably all of the coverage coming out of there where the wildfires tore through just hours after the pga golf opener for the season, the safeway open. we can tell you this morning that people in this area still do not have power, there are no traffic signs, the streetlights are still out and we are also hearing that there is a water treatment plant that is nearby that is no longer processing water, meaning a boil water notice is in place. reggie, we will stay on top of this and hopefully

>> reporter: natasha, reggie, good morning. we just got to santa rosa. we're here at the sonoma county fairgrounds and getting an update on the tubbs fire, the largest one burning, the most destructive, and it has been the deadliest as well. catching up here with the public information officer for santa rosa, paul lowenthal, good morning. can you give me the very latest? >> the fire moved into the city of santa rosa, it's been about three and a half days ago causing extensive amount of damage into the city limits. the whole north end of the city still under evacuation. a lot of structures damaged. a lot of neighborhoods devastated or destroyed. we understand obviously now with the way the fire originally moved in and all the fingers with the winds we experienced, we now have issues calistoga roadside, still issues in santa rosa. it's a dynamic situation. >> reporter: you mentioned to me earlier calistoga, parts of calistoga are evacuated? >> the volume evacuations taking place from this fire from this area it's a coordinated effort between a lot of agenc
