ken rendell: good way to put it.usan wilkins: in our classrooms, getting at the issue of leadership, i think we want students to understand these leaders are not born great leaders. they have to make difficult choices along the way. having students understand why certain choices are made when they are made is an important intellectual exercise. we often use the appropriately named choices program and out of the watson institute of brown university. it will take some of these very controversial and important moments in history and really ask students to do some research and try to understand why the decisions that were made were made. one example that comes to mind is the appeasement policy before the outbreak of the war. students today look back on that and saying what were they thinking? why would you ever appease a person like hitler? i think it is very important to stop students and say look, we are talking about very intelligent people who were making these decisions. so that is a very good question -- why appeas

is rendell enough to combat that? >> i think he absolutely is.and another thing i think's really good about having rendell's support is that he's not the kind of guy who gives it easily and freely and frequently. he's always been cautious about how he supports folks, and even as a candidate myself, he said something polite about me, and that went a very long way. >> [ laughs ] >> it's bringing credibility to a campaign. so, when he creates a line of accountability by publicly saying, "i'm not only endorsing her, but i'm actually putting my name on the ship that we're floating," i think it goes a long way to funders and other political insiders who are gonna be necessary to see her be successful. >> very quickly, all week long, we've been talking about the pope coming to philadelphia. we're now getting more details. there are gonna be traffic blocks. within them, there will be security zones. within them, there will be smaller zones that you've got to get in through a fence. the mayor's saying this is sane and safe. other people are saying, "you'r

i agree with governor rendell.the right are arriving at the same place for different reasons. and these two individuals, trump and bernie sanders, very different, but they really personifying people's anger with the system. i do think, though, that these crowds are pretty amazing. i've been around politics a long time. it is unusual this early in a campaign for 26,000 people to show up in a community. particularly for an organization like bernie sanders, which is probably, you know, pretty boots strapped and grass roots oriented. i think the clinton campaign is taking real careful attention to that, they're paying attention to it. and you see a lot of -- i would call it in political parlance, there's an opposition research dump happening on bernie sanders and it's not coming from republicans. it's coming from the clinton campaign. >> and what about jeb bush, because last week hillary clinton was taking him on, first of all, in his home base in miami. and going after him, making a lot of people think he was the big

let's turn to ed rendell and clarence page. governor, to you first, are you surprised that these other candidates aren't hitting trump today? >> a little bit, although i think, first of all, let me say i think donald trump is right about the questions being unfair. i think either rupert murdoch or roger ailes told the moderators, we have to take trump down and make him seem like a buffoon. the questions were more hostile to him. even lindsey graham came out and said the questions were unfair and overly hostile and aggressive. that's number one. number two, i don't think any of the republican candidates think that donald trump is going to be the nominee. but they believe he's got a following. and i would suspect he's going to go down in the polls from that performance, but you never know because this has been a phenomenal year and reaction to him has been unpredictable. but even if he goes down in the polls, someone wants to inherit the donald trump voters. so everyone is tip toeing around. and i think based on the debate last n

now bring in former pennsylvania governor ed rendell. governor, good to see you, as always.ton is honest and forthright from the beginning of this controversy? >> yeah. i think there's been parsing of language but basically she has. and she's right. she didn't do anything that other secretaries of state didn't do. they had private e-mails. colin powell recommended she have a private e-mail. so that's number one. number two, she didn't break any state department regulations. that was affirmed after the newspapers got it wrong. so no. i think she's been basically telling the truth. she may have parsed things here or there but basically telling the truth. and i do think she's right that this -- she's fortunate this is taking place almost a half a year in front of the first caucus and a year and a half in front of the first -- the dwal election itself so i think by the time november 2016 rolls around this will not be an issue on the front burner. >> dealing with it now, leaky pipe of the e-mail saga, also affecting her poor polling coming to her being honest and trustworthy as w

what is your reaction to what ed rendell had to say there?'s still early in the game. we watch this stuff every day. but the reality is most voters are just beginning to get their arms around the race. the nbc poll done at this point in the 2008 cycle showed that barack obama was down 22 points to hillary clinton. so there's a long ways to go. >> how about the money factor? is it true, like ed rendell was saying, that you've got a lot of donors who are backing hillary clinton, and she may have sucked all the action out of the room in that area? >> well, think first of all the vice president has a sizeable network of friends. at this point, we're not -- the campaign will have to build a 50-state operation. to raise enough money to compete in places like iowa. the feedback i've gotten in the last 48 hours, there's a jen woin interest in that happening. if he's able to succeed, the money will come. >> do you have any insight into what took place yesterday apt the biden-warren meeting, or what might have taken place? >> well, i'm reading about it

back in the rendell years, in one of the standoffs, 27,000 state workers didn't show up.olks weren't getting paid. the folks understood what was going on because they felt it in their pocketbooks at home. the rent-rebate checks, where were they? right now, who's feeling the pain? no one. >> everybody who's got a kid who is going "what the heck is going on in these schools?" >> yeah, but, for the most part, it's imminent. it's coming. >> mm-hmm. >> at the moment, there's no pain. the governor has a popular agenda. and so the governor will take the hit the first time the pain gets out to the public. so, when you think about it that way, he's got a popular agenda, plus he's been on this p.r. offensive. every week he's out two or three events. and do you cover the local lawmaker or do you cover the governor? >> you cover the governor. >> you cover the governor. >> is part of it also the issue, when people think of pension reform or privatizing state stores, they care a little bit about the state store, but pension reform just seems very wonky. they don't really attach to it.

vederman, a lobbyist, was his campaign-finance director when he ran for mayor and had worked under rendell, as well, during his mayoral term. and robert brand, a fattah friend. and the allegation is not just the money, but, also, that allegedly, fattah would use his power to try to get positions or at least access to the obama administration appointments to ambassadorships and that kind of thing. some people would say that's politics as usual, that it's pay to play and that people use their power to offer access and to get money, that it's sort of a quid pro quo that might not be legal, but it happens a lot, people say. >> well, it's not legal, and when it does happen, it's not unusual for those with wealth, for them to use the wealth to influence, benefit for themselves. but usually, it's a bit more subtle, and it's not in your face. but it is illegal, and it should not be usual, and especially in a system where we have a history of institutionalized corruption. but, having said that, i think these are sweeping allegations against congressman fattah, and we have to, also, as renee pointed

from fellow democrats, quite a few of them listening to the "new york times," former governor ed rendell the e-mail controversy, they've handled the e-mail issue poorly, not seeing this as a more serious issue, she should have turned over the server at the start. how is she going respond to fellow democrats on this issue? >> i don't think she's going to respond directly to the fellow democrats, i think she's admitted herself in terms of her team, they could have handled the entire situation a little bit before. so hopefully going forward would continue to see, i don't know, more transparency. this is going to continue to go on and be an ongoing issue for sure, ata least until october when they have the hearings in the house of representatives. so -- on benghazi. it will be a continuing issue and we'll be talking about it for at least a year. david: imagine the gop attack ads haven't begun yet, once they roll out, it's an issue. noelle and jessica, have a wonderful weekend, appreciate it. >> thank you. melissa: switching gears to king of the tax code, donald trump is set to release econom
