just to happen what happened in el reno, ef-3, it goes to ef-5. well built structures can sustain significant damage. we saw 75 yard wild tornado on the ground for 2.2 miles. take a look at this map here, if you think it's been busy, it's been quite busy. we've had 237 tornados in the last 10 days. we're going to add some more tornados on the ground tonight. already under way as that are as the watches, since the last time i spoke to you, the tornado watch has been expected. we're talking eastern new mexico heading into kansas. that stretches for 500 miles, we already have cells developing there, we have a severe thunderstorm watch, two areas we're watching today, across the west and ohio valley, and eventually this moves into the mid-atlantic here, heads up if you're watching us from west virginia and virginia, and portions of the 95 corridor including baltimore, dooich.c. be getting hit this afternoon. damaging wind potential. and then the storms we talked about, that's going to be coming in later this afternoon and evening. i'll time this out f

but the real focus has been on el reno. you can see that we had very strong wind gusts, a lot of lightning as well. but let's break down the time line. at 10:26 local time, a tornado warning was issued. one minute later at 10:27, the tornado sirens started to go offe off. two minutes later at 10:29, that is when we started to see some of the damage as the tornado made it down to the ground. when we look at all the damage that you can see on the other side of your screen, a lot of this damage is consist i wante e ef-3, the same rating of the tornado six years ago. you will have walls and roofs torn off and a lot of trees uprooted and heavy cars that can be lifted and thrown several feet away. again, we have a lot of those images showing that. one thing to note with this particular one, why it was so dangerous, because it happened at night when people are sleeping. but in fact 37% of all the tornadoes that oklahoma gets are actually at night. so it is not out of the question. i know we heard that woman say and you've heard it

reno. so many families lost everything. it's really bad right there. but we know there is more severe weather on the way? >> reporter: i'm afraid so. not until tuesday. we'll get a break tonight and tomorrow. but tuesday does look bad in this region. the risk tonight is to our west. we'll show you on the radar. three tornadoes touching down. kansas and colorado. denver, under tornado watch. and you see the storms firing. flood watches through oklahoma city, wichita, kansas as well. and louisville to west virginia, you may get some rough storms tonight. chicago, getting some tomorrow, north of here, des moines, indianapolis as well. tuesday, a significant risk of severe weather, here in el reno, oklahoma city, tulsa, wichita, maybe jefferson city, kansas city, up through omaha, st. louis, damaging winds, hail, and the possibility of more tornadoes and more rain. something else this area does not need. >> rob, thank you. >>> next to the horrifying scene in hawaii. a california man attacked by

we begin with breaking news out of el reno, oklahoma.two are tdead and nearly 30 injured when a tornado tore through the city destroying a mobile home park and a motel. right now, search and rescue missions are underwayment this is part of the massive tornado outbreak across the central u.s. oklahoma has been the target of dozens of tornados. this latest twister just one of more than 200 that region has seen over the past ten days. so let's begin by checking in with omar jimenez. he's in el reno, oklahoma and we point out this is the same city that got hit with the widest tornado on record six years ago. the memories must still be fresh if not brought back by what you're see iing there, omar. >> that's right. almost to the day six years ago right now and of course this one ripping through el reno in just a matter of minutes. i'll show you some of the damage. you see behind me crews are working to restore what is left of this on the ground of the hotel that was destroyed. one of the things the residents describe in the immediate aftermath

right here this is the town of el reno as it was moving through. let's where he dobreak down the. 11:26 eastern time, 10:26 central time, tornado warning was issued. one minute later the sirens went off at 27 past the hour. and then just two minutes later at 11:29 eastern time, that is when you really started to have a lot of the damage begin to come in from the town of el reno. so you are talking minutes here that really made the difference as this tornado ripped through the area. one other thing to note, this was a nocturnal tornado meaning it happened at night, people are sleeping, they are unaware. 37% of all the tornadoes that take place in oklahoma are actually nocturnal tornadoes. so again, keep that in mind and that is where we end up getting the highest fatalities because people are asleep. and this is only one of nine possible tornadoes yesterday. and again, we had over 100 total storm reports. but this is where we expect to move forward. we expect a skreer weathevere w texas, oklahoma, kansas and across the midwest and mid-atlantic. >> s

you're looking at live pictures out of el reno, oklahoma.outside of oklahoma city, where you can see major flooding has forced a number of people out of their homes. >> look what they have to do to stay safe. moments ago, rescuers deployed a boat to homes surrounded by water. ed lavendera was there as they were being rescued. tell us what you're hearing from these families. >> hey, jim. this is the oklahoma city swiftwater rescue team. they have been working with the el reno swiftwater rescue this morning. the floodwaters here, the boat is up. they have rescued about ten people here just off of this street that we're on, called elm street. and we're in el reno, here, and this is where the flood waters, six-mile creek is in the distance, and the floodwaters have come up slowly overnight. we talked to some of the families pulled out of here. ten people in all in the last hour and a half or so. they say they had gone to bed last night and when they woke up this morning, their homes were essentially sitting on aisland surrounded by water. rescue

more than 6 inches f rain fell in el reno near oklahoma, and on this day the fire didn't launched half a dozen rescue. overnight this creek turned into a river because of the storm system that came through. you can see there's a water rescue happening just behind me, a mother and her child. we understand there have been several rescues in this area. from the air a collection of abandoned cared can be seen by flooding water. homes looked like islands. >> trees were down all around me. i couldn't go anywhere, i couldn't see in any direction. >> oh, my god. >> reporter: this is the same system that spawned more than two dozen reported tornadoes in four states. back in oklahoma, this woman rode out the storm in her laundry room. >> finally my husband said, we're going to have to go somewhere. >> reporter: crews are cleaning up the aftermath before the next tomorrow moves through this waterlogged landscape. one emergency manager was begging people to stay home because they didn't have enough police officers or barricades to keep drivers away from these flooded roads. there is more rain expe

but we start with jeff paul live in el reno with the latest there. reporter: hi, mike. the weather service is confirming that not only was it a tornado but a powerful ef3 trainer the touchdown here in el reno, oklahoma. this is during the same week where this region, the entire region has experienced devastating flooding. to take a look to the side we will start here so you can really get an idea how powerful the tornado was. it was a car dealership right there. you can see was maybe a billboard or sign that was smashed down to some of the brand-new cars and trucks for sale. as you move over you can see some of the workers out here. that is a motel. american budget value inn or it was at least for this were officials believe the tornado had the most impact. sort of where it had that direct hit and is move a little bit further over this is the image that timmy is the most powerful one. this is the second story, this was two stories. look at some parts of this, it doesn't look like it anymore. the whole second floor pretty much just rips right off the top by the tornado.

cnn national correspondent omar jimenez joins us from el reno. omar, it's been a long day there.e rescue operations wrapped up yet? >> yeah, ana, at this point the mayor tells me that search-and-rescue operations as far as going door to door and looking for anyone left in the rubble, that process is complete, at least as far as we know at this point. what they are doing now is trying to rebuild a lot ofthe infrastructure that was damaged heavily hen this tornado came through. you mentioned some of how it was characterized. it was an ef-3 tornado, 5 being the most severe. it traveled two miles and caused all of this destruction in just a matter of four minutes. two of the biggest points of emphasis we've been keeping an eye on. one in a mobile home park. the tornado was powerful enough to pick up entire mobile homes and slam them back down based on accounts that we've heard. and the other point of emphasis that we've been keeping an eye on is the hotel. there is really only one word to describe it at this point, absolute decimation. when you take a look at those images there, bel

all of this unfolding here in the town of el reno, oklahoma, which is about 20 miles east or west.ound we're on a street called elm street. you walk this way. it's a small country road just north of interstate 40, and about a mile down this way, this entire small road, is flooded out by water. just over here over the last few hours we saw three swift water rescue teams deployed boats out in their -- out into this water and just beyond these tree lines here, kate, there were a number of families who were trapped in their homes. ten people in all, including four children were pulled here to dry land this morning. we spoke with several of these family members who say they went to bed last night and heavy rainfall started pouring overnight and when they woke up about 5:00 this morning central time, they found themselves on a little island. they were surrounded by water, and that's when they started calling for help. it takes several hours for all of these rescue teams to get to these homes. they are behind these tree lines, so it's impossible to see here at this point. those families s
