let's turn now to the senate where there are three races considered likely republican wins. florida, texaska. republicans have been spending -- they have been spending a lot less than democrats. they have spending disadvantages in all three. democrats turn to hail merries in these red states to try to save their senate chances because of other races that are going the other way towards republicans but a true surprise comes in nebraska. which shifted from solid to likely republican last week. this brings us to tonight's focus, 50 races in 50 days. the senate contest in the g.o.p. stronghold of nebraska has emerged as one to watch. incumbent republican senator deb fischer won the seat twice. independent owe opponent d.a. osborn union leader mounting a serious challenge this year. osborn campaigning on working class background leaning into his experience, leading a 2021 strike in a kellogg's strike. fisher's campaign describes osborn as a democrat in sheep's clothing. the trump backed fisher is campaigning on her legislative record. highlighting her work on the armed services and agriculture

and texas represents their best opportunity to turn a republican seat into a democratic seat. but that's not really saying very much. if republicans were able to be defeated in texas, that would still come as a pretty big surprise. that's despite the fact that colin allred has pulled within the margin of error in many of the public polling that we've seen, has raised millions of dollars and seems to be running a pretty competitive campaign against ted cruz. his biggest problem, though, is he's running in a presidential election year and the former president donald trump is running ahead of kamala harris in most public polls, somewhere between five and seven points. so he'd have to find a way to close that gap. tonight perhaps provides him that best opportunity. in many ways you have to think of texas as a mini country. it has 20 different media markets. it is very expensive to get that message out throughout the entire state. but tonight he'll have that opportunity in this televised debate which will be seen in all 20 of those media markets and it will be the only opportunity

texas has been republican for as long as most people can remember. i covered that 1988 race. ndrea, i think that we can absolutely say that texas is the democrats' best opportunity to pick up a seat that belongs to republicans. in the same breath say it would be a huge shock in allred were to upset cruz. there are a number of factors against allred. texas voters come home. democrats often feel as though they have a shot at flipping that state blue. and the republican machine churns up and ends up at the end of the day finding a way to get a victory. the other factor is this is a presidential election year. ted cruz has his issues. high negative ratings for him, even within his own state. the fact that donald trump is on the ticket and is running six to eight points ahead of kamala harris, that means that allred has to close that margin and have people vote for him and donald trump. he has cut a more moderate path than perhaps some of his previous statewide democrats like o'rourke. they are making a more focused campaign. every democrat from the top of the ticket down to local

texas? in florida also, it's been a change there. >> well, i think they have moved in different directions. florida has fallen off the map for democrats. now republicansion voter registration advantage. texas is interesting. it has moved towards purple status in the senate race. i don't believe kamala harris is within striking distance of winning the state. ted cruz's unique unpopularity has closed that senate race to a few points. allred has run a very good campaign. at the end of the day, the hurdle for allred is that democrats are not performing well enough with hispanic voters. in our average, kamala harris is leading hispanic voters by ten points, down from the 24-point margin biden won by. can allred run ahead of harris among hispanic voters, particularly in south texas along the border? he will need everything to go right in order to win the state, which no democrat has done since 1994. >> is it a situation where it's not a number of key battleground states that we should be looking for but rather a battleground state that may help determine things? >> pennsylvania is the biggest. kamala harris has other paths here that are still alive in case

why should it choose to give some of its to the republican candidate? if texas isn't going to give some of its electors to the democratic candidate? but congress could do that for the entire country. the senate could eliminate the filibuster entirely. doesn't even take a statute. the senate is was created by senate rules, not by the constitution statute. congress could pass a law that would outlaw gerrymandering for congressional elections as part of a bill that passed the house in the last and can go on with other things. but my point there's so much that could be done by statutory change if there's the will to do so. do you think it's likely that these problems will be fixed from? legislation, judicial decisions? i don't think it will happen unless advocate for it. and so my hope is that people will look at these and say, we need to make these changes. we need to lessen the impact electoral college. we need to find ways of lessening the senate being so anti-democratic we to eliminate partizan gerrymandering. and the interesting thing is for some of these there
