richard engel is there. richard?re back in kathmandu but earlier today we are at the mount everest base camp at 17,600 feet it's the main base camp climbers use to stage their equipment, to rest and then prepare for their assent to the upper camps and perhaps ultimately some so them to the summit of mount everest. when we were at the base camp we were finally able to understand what happened on saturday when that massive earthquake struck and rock sod many places and destroyed so many places in this country. when the earthquake happened around noon on saturday an avalanche broke off from the mountain overlooking the base camp. the base camp is long and thin and has several hundred people staying in it. and when the avalanche came crashing down with ice and snow and rocks, it tore through the center section of the base camp destroying the only medical facility at the base camp tearing up tents, sending some of the climbers hundreds of feet. we don't know exactly how many people died. of the estimates are 15 to 19 but
