nbc news chief correspondent richard engel joining us on the streets of paris. e seeing things burning behind you, richard. fill us in. >> reporter: so we are in central paris, and demonstrators, it's hard to know how many, but it looks like more than 100,000, perhaps many more than that, have come out onto the streets. this is all about pension reforms. this is about changing the retirement age from 62 to 64. about two weeks ago a new law was passed. people here say the new law was forced through by president emmanuel macron. it was approved by a court here, the equivalent of the supreme court. so now it is law, but this new pension reform here, the new retirement age, 64 years old, has yet to be implemented. so people across the country are coming out. they're trying to bring this country to a standstill because they do not want this law to be implemented. they are out on the streets, not just that. they're having strikes. they have not been collecting the garbage. air traffic controllers are on strike which has disrupted flights at many airports. also somement

nbc's chief foreign corresponden richard engel has made his way to paris for us. through what's happening here >> reporter: well, good morning. as many as a million people could take to the streets all across france today. we are in paris. protesters are already gathering here, and this is all about retirement age the french government, about two weeks ago, president emanuel macron passed through a bill, it is now a law it was approved by the equivalent of the supreme cour here raising the retirement age from 62 to 64. and many people in this country do not like it they don't want this to be implemented. no date for implementation has been set although, it is supposed to come into effect this fall. but the unions want to stop it many people want to make things so difficult for the government, so difficult for macron that he changes his mind although, macron is showing no signs of backing down. and they do have some -- some tools in their arsenal that they plan to use to try to get the government to relent, aside from demonstrations like this the unions here are pl

nbc's richard engel reports on the infighting. >> reporter: it's been called the biggest land battle since world war ii, bakhmut in eastern ukraine. for months, a group of mercenaries known as the wagner group, has been leading the charge here, where russia has gained ground. much to the embarrassment of the russian army, which to undercut its rival, has, according to the mercenaries, been blocking the delivery of supplies. today, the head of wagner standing over the bodies of his fighters, says he'll quit bakhmut next week unless they get more ammunition. russia accuses the united states of conspireing with ukraine to carry out a drone attack against the kremlin itself, calling it an attempted assassination on president putin, allegations the u.s. and ukraine strongly deny. >> one thing i can tell you for certain is that the united states was not involved in this incident in any way. >> reporter: today, russia's foreign minister promised a response with what he calls concrete action. and negotiations aren't going well. in turkey, talks over access to the black sea got heated, when u

. >> joining us now to take a closer look, chief foreign correspondent, richard engel, and military analyst, barry mccafrey, and dan delus. what do we know about what happened? >> we don't have very much verified information. i can tell you what -- how the information came out and there's some big questions about the videos that have been emerging because they didn't emerge in a very organic way. if you look at that video in particular, that video came out around 3:00 moscow time. and if you look at that video, it appears to be taken of a security camera. and if you look, one side, what seems to be a drone, coming in and exploing right before it hits the dome of the kremlin. on the other side, where the graphic, saying who took the video is, that seems to be the reflection of someone filming the video. you can see cabinetry behind them. and someone is backing out of the screen. someone taking video of a screen with a cell phone or another camera. this video came in around 3:00 p.m. moscow time. and it shows the alleged moment of impact by this small drone, a hobbyist-style drone. this is 12

attack the kremlin in an attempt to assassinate vladimir putin nbc's chief foreign correspondent, richard engel joins us with details on this story. richard, good morning to you >> good morning, craig in addition to those attacks, the kremlin this morning accused washington of coordinating with kyiv to carry out this alleged attack u.s. officials say there was no united states involvement and that the u.s. had no advanced knowledge. the kremlin says the ukrainian government sent this small drone and another to assassinate president vladimir putin the alleged attempt thwarted when the drones were destroyed by the kremlin's radar defense system putin wasn't in the kremlin or in moscow. the russian said preserves the right to take retaliatory measures when and where it sees fit. dmitry medvedev saying that moscow has no options, except the physical elimination of zelenskyy and his clique ukraine denied any involvement, accusing the kremlin of staging the attack to gain public support for a failing war. president zelenskyy was in finland at the time. >> we don't attack putin or moscow we fight on o

richard engel is on the streets of paris.orter: we are in the end point of the demonstrators and here, there have been running clashes for the last hour between demonstrators and police. you can see some of the tear gas or if you wait a couple of minutes, you'll see a lot of tear gas. the demonstrators also lighting fires. according to organizers, more than 2 million people nationwide have taken to the streets to oppose this law that changed the retirement age from 62 to 64. the law hasn't been implemented yet and the reason they're trying to bring this country to a standstill is to prevent the law from being implemented but so far, the government is showing no signs of backing down. macron and his supporters say this change is necessary because if they keep going as the way things are, they will not be able to afford the current pension system. but people here say they will continue to demonstrate. organizers from different, from labor unions say they'll also try to cut the electricity for several upcoming events including t

nbc news chief foreign correspondent richard engel is in paris.aordinary. what are you seeing? >> reporter: we are now in central paris. this is where many of the clashes have been taking place. it is now starting to be later in the evening here. the sun is just starting to go down, and often in protests like this, and this is not the first time there have been protests on this issue in paris, things get much more tense and occasionally more violent. to set the scene here, some of the demonstrators are still camped out in the center of the square, they are holding this ground. they say they're trying to shut city, show their opposition to this new law which has yet to be implemented. around the edges of the square are the riot police. you can see some of the riot police just down there holding their shields and face masks, backed up by ambulances. occasionally, and there's not a real pattern to it, but every 20 minutes or so the riot police will rush in and try to either arrest someone who has been particularly disruptive or just disperse the demo

richard engel and our crack digital team had shown, there's a big time lag of 12 hours between the time video and when they showed the follow on posting. something is going on there, which raised suspicions. do we have any idea what happened? if so, what did it? >> andrea, i don't think anybody at this point, except those that launched this attack, know for certain who was responsible for it. it's possible it was done by some ukrainians. i really would not think zelenskyy would have authorized such a strike. it's a very poorly planned assassination attempt, if it was to go after putin. it didn't appear as though there were a lot of explosives on the drone. it's possible they could have been ukrainians launching it inside russia to demonstrate their reach. some folks thought the russians did this themselves to provide a pretext for some of the follow-on attacks that may be more heinous than previous atabs. i do think the russians see this as an embarrassment. to carry out that type of attack, even though it was limited, shows there's a vulnerability there. i do not believe that the russi
