richard jordan is in northwest d.c. in the chevy chase neighborhood. it looks like we've got more trees down. richard, what's going on? >> reporter: that's right. more trees down, more power lines down as well. it's making a big mess as well as a big inconvenience for the people out here. take a look at that. now, there was some thunder and lightning coming down just after 4:30 this afternoon. not a lot of wind so it appears that lightning may have actually struck that tree. that's what brought it down. of course the power lines that were underneath it came down too. right now we're harrying from residents that they have been in contact with pepco and told they may get their power back by 7:00 tonight. that's pretty unlikely since crews have not arrived yet to repair the lines but a lot of people are saying a few weeks ago with that really nasty storm they kept their power so they feel their time has come and now they are dealing without power here as well. but a lot of lightning, thurnnd. it's pretty spotty because just a few blocks away, really there'

richard jordan joins us with details now. >> reporter: metro trains up to speed.he transit agency says a computer glitch that prompted controllers to stop every train on its track a few days ago is fixed. >> it does appear that we have resolved the issue that caused this weekend's outage. >> reporter: the impacted computer system tracks the trains. metro operators can see where each train is and coordinate rail traffic. but when the computer failed to show the trains on screen, the agency hit the brakes. >> and they did the right thing. they had a problem with their computers. they shut it down. you know, passenger safety is number one. >> reporter: but metro isn't just dealing with computer problems. the extreme heat blamed for a train derailment this month that had passengers climbing out from underground to get to safety. earlier in the week train problems closed the dupont station. even with all those issues, metro customers are still hopping on for a ride. >> you've got to take it as it goes, you know. >> i used to -- up until the ending of last month i used

richard jordan, news 4. >>> metro expected to be crowded tonight as people go to the mall. the system will close at midnight, but the trains will be running at rush hour levels between now and then. that said, riders should avoid the smithsonian and federal triangle stations. >>> metro is continuing to investigate power problems on the green line train. it happened last night at 6:00. the train was nearing college park station when it began to slow down. it eventually just stopped. about 300 passengers were inside the hot train for about 20 minutes before police evacuated the riders. there you see some photographs on the tracks. they had to walk along the tracks and then were put on shuttle buss. >>> it was no easy task to rescue a teenager whose . >>> several of the coalition forces in afghanistan are in hospital tonight after somebody opened fire on them yesterday. the attack happened in wardak province in the eastern part of that country. nato says the man who shot the troops was dressed in an afghan army uniform. the growing number of these attacks has raised questions

richard jordan explains what led to a rescue. >> reporter: a metro rider ends up on the wrong side of the tracks. metro security footage shows the woman waiting for the red line wednesday night then jumping on the tracks and reaching for her red bag sitting on ledge. but her next move could have taken her life. she steps on the third rail to get up too the lines separating each tracks. luckily a train didn't zip by. the video clearly shows there were a lot of people waiting on the platteform and it appears the woman didn't even realize what she was doing is dangerous. >> a witness writes on twitter, she seemed confused, lost, metro reacted quickly. she appeared to be fine after they pulled her off the tracks. metro says the woman is from france and is not familiar with the transit system. but still riders are scratching their heads over this one. >> i'm a tourist and i wouldn't do anything like that. so i don't know, attention getting maybe. >> reporter: metro says the move is no laughing matter. the agency says if anyone happens to fall or drop something off the platform, they should
