richard jordan is live for us this woodbridge.e william's county, cla bn canceled all day today. richard, we can see the snow. >> reporter: it's light, but it just really started to come down a little heavier just within the past few minutes. but take a look this is route 1 near maryland avenue you can see nothing is sticking to the pavement here on the road. light traffic at this point and now that schools have been canceled here you can expect that it will sta whe things are brings city are on the major highways. about 700 plows are out all across northern virginia and prince william, fairfax, loudoun, arlington county. they have been doing a pretty good job of treating those roads, laying down the salt and brine. we haven't seen the plows having to actually hit the pavement to escape up anything at this point. it's just not sticking enough just yet. the snow is still coming it town pretty light. now, when we were making our way down here taking 95 southbound, we also noticed the snow at about lorton, the first flakes. and now s

richard jordan at the live desk with the latest. >>> let's get you up to speed. french police say they are closing in on the two brothers behind the shooting rampage at the charlie hebdo magazine headquarters on wednesday. these are live pictures where the standoff is taking place. 25 miles northeast of paris. this is not far from the charles duegall airport. there are helicopters in the air in that flight space right now. here's how all of this got started. there were shots fired at the brothers when the brothers pulled off a car-jacking. it started a gun battle. at least one hostage these men apparently have held up in a factory there. this is not far from the gas station where there was a reporting sighting of them yesterday. again, helicopters in the air right now. a perimeter has been set up. french authorities say is they are confident they've got these guys. they've got these guys cornered in this area. this operation is unfolding right now. we will stay on top of it all morning. aaron and eun. >>> thank you, richard jordan, from the live desk. >>> 5:01. w

richard jordan just arrived on the scene there. >> reporter: this is just off of north glebe road. still several firefighters here on the scene. but the fire is out. take a look at the damage caused here inside this home. arlington county firefighters saying when they first arrived, there were two people that had managed to escape the flames. they were standing on the roof of the porch. they were pulled down off the roof they were taken to the hospital just to get checked out. no updated information yet on just how they're doing, how the fire started, but this was a three-alarm fire when it was going strong. firefighters say they found hoarding conditions inside the home so that definitely made matters worse as far as fighting the fire. most of the dwanlg is to the back of the home. but again, firefighters right now are just wrapping up their fire hoses getting ready to clear the scene. fire investigation get a tors have now arrived to start their investigation to determine the cause of the fire. but again, two people were inside this home. they're over at the hospital this morning

richard jordan is driving around northern virginia this morning. good morning. how is it looking out there? >> reporter: hey, we stopped in wood bridge. got out to show you the conditions we're dealing with here. light sw flakes. they're coming in waves and they are just adding up to what is already on the ground. take a welcome th is a parking lot. it turned icy. you canpractically bey that on to the roadway and it is clear. that is because v dot has been hard at work all into the night. they have plows and snow trucks. you see one coming through hitting the roads. they hit all the major roadways. they're looking clear. they're looking good. haven't had any major issues on the roads this morning because of the pretreating and the plowg on overnight. but if you look across the street you can see the car dealership there. those cars completely covered. that's what you'll find when you head out this morning unless you park in a garage or some kid surface. you'll find the snow-covered vehicle there. you will need the ice scraper this morning. you'll need to brush i

richard jordan reports from the scene. >> reporter: we're just off of north glebe road. arlington county firefighters say they have been able to get the fire out. it only took them about 30 minutes. but they still have a lot of damage to go through here. you can see the two story home here suffered extensive fire damage. when the firefighters first arrived, they say there were flames shooting out of the windows and two people who were inside the burning home had managed to escape. they were standing on the roof of the porch just next to the house. fire trucks away to bring in their ladder get those people down safely. and then take them over to the hospital where they are being treated this morning after suffering some degree of smoke inhalation. as far as the cause here firefighters say it's still too early to tell. the big challenge for firefighters was what they're calling the hoarding conditions inside the home. they say there was a lot to go through. there is extensive damage here. fire investigators will now be work to go determine the cause. but again, two people

richard jordan live with the latest from the live desk. richard? >> major delays right now. this is on the inner loop that is partially shut down. there is one lane getting by on the shoulder so not an actual lane open but traffic is moving on the shoulder, just past the accident scene here on kenilworth avenue. this was a truck and a motorcycle that collided there. one person suffering some serious injuries had to be taken to the hospital to the trauma center by ambulance there. but you've still got the backup traffic there, held beyond just the crash site here because the wreckage is still there in the middle of the road. you do s trickle down there on the right shoulder trying to get past. but there is still major backup. and we expect that will be the case for the foreseeable future at this point as the accident investigation is just getting started. again, one person taken to the trauma center for some serious injuries. we're still waiting to get an update on that person's condition. but you can see, the major traffic issue, we believe that might have been the semi truc

nbc 4 richard jordan is standing by live near where the 16,000 square foot mansion once stood. what are you hearing now, richard? >> reporter: barbara, this is the first time investigators, the searchers, are able to go through that rubble to see if there are any victims that may have been inside the home at the time the fire started. it had been unsafe up until now. the medical examiner is down at the site, access has been restricted to the property, bu no confirmation of a discovery yet. the damage from above appears extensive, but it's the human toll that has yet to be determined. atf agents working with roughly 20 anne arundel county workers, six people unaccounted for after a massive fire burned a mansion to the ground. don powell an executive is missing, along with his wife and four grandchildren. firefighters can't say for certain whether the blaze took their live but their friends and neighbors are leaving messagesen condolence at the property's main gate where signs of holiday celebrations are now the backdrop for a makeshift memorial. relatives also providing investiga

richard jordan is live at reagan national airport with more. richard, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. it looks like it will take a while for things to get up to speed back at airports across the country. primarily in the northeast. here at reagan already seeing cancellations to new york's laguardia, jfk also newark airport. logan airport in boston that airport had 23 inches. so it will take them a while to get things going again. most of the flights that were expected to come in from boston have already been canceled. there is only one here at reagan, a flight coming in at the jetblue flight expected to arrive at 7:40. that is the only one on the board still happening. so it looks like it will take a little while for things to get back to normal. part of the problem is that most of the major airlines still need to get their planes in position. many of them had moved them out of the storm zone ahead of the snow that was predicted to come in. so now they have to get those planes back in place. they also have to get the flight crews back i

let's go to news 4 richard jordan at the live desk. richard?> a plane crashed into a warehouse in lakeland florida. you'll be able to see in the images the gaping hole in the roof where it's believed the plane crashed into. firefighters saying it's too dangerous to get into the warehouse because of chemicals stored there and a risk of explosion. authorities were able to confirm there was no one in the warehouse at the time of the crash. not clear how many people were on the plane. the initial information is that the plane was from a flight school. so it's possible there was an instructor and student pilot. that's the assumption at this point, but, again, firefighters and investigators have yet to actually go in there to see the wreckage, to see if there are victims that can be saved or that need any medical attention. it's unclear if anyone could have possibly survived this. the hazmat team called out because of the risk's an explosion there. we'll monitor it here from the live desk. >> thanks. >>> several changes on the way how we interact wit

news 4's richard jordan is live outside fairfax villa school. >> school just started here at this school because of the two-hour delay all across fairfax county so we still have a couple of students that are trickling in late because there was a little challenge for some of the people that came to school today. especially those that walk to school because of the sidewalks. still covered in ice. still pretty slick. we saw a couple of children struggling to keep their balance. the roads are clear, this here fairfax villa elementary is a neighborhood school. you have to take the side streets to get here. many parents say they didn't have any problems. that two-hour delay gave them more than enough time to navigate the roads. a difference story from yesterday when a lot of parents were upset with fairfax county schools because they decided to open schools, open on time even with the heavy snowfall and the dangerous road conditions. today, fairfax had a two-hour delay. loudoun county canceled. you'll hear from ed he lives right across the street from middle school. he has seen a lot of kids c

richard jordan has more. >> the federal investigators spent hours looking at the train and the tracks. they've been able to make some initial assessments. they say the train, the yellow line train going south to virginia stopped suddenly 800 feet beyond the station platform. there was not a fire on the train. it did not derail. there was smoke in the train. that's when people started to self-evacuate. the ntsb had control of the scene for most of the night. metro has taken back control for the morning commute. the two agencies will be meeting later today. likely they'll be discussing what called arcing or a flash other. this is what power from one source is picked up by another conductor. in this case one possibility is the high voltage third rail was that initial source and then water was the other conductor. that's what lead to the smoke. there was about half an inch of water there by the tracks. >> water is conductive and there's many other things that are conductive. it's a wet environment in many of the tunnels, and at it location there's some water. >>> the ntsb is looking into

let's go straight to our richard jordan at the live desk with more on that. good morning. >> hi barbara, good morning. mcdonnell will be going to prison february 9th. his request to go on bail while he appeals his corruption conviction has been denied. we just got the order from the judge. the judge saying that he's rejecting the request because the basis of the appeal does not qualify as a close-call question meaning that it's not likely that this will go the other way, that the judgment will flip. today's decision can also be appealed but that is also very unlikely. bob mcdonnell was convicted on 11 corruption charges, accused of taking bribes from johnnie williams. his wife maureen also sentenced. two years in prison for bob mcdonnell and he is expected to start serving time on february 9th. barbara? >>> two people were killed and a third person injured in a house fire. firefighters responded to a home on foxgate drive around 5:00 p.m. yesterd. heavy smoke could be seen coming from the house when firefighters arrived. there were also reports of peop the tw

richard jordan with the new details from the live desk. richard? >> the breaking news out of fairfax county. we have just learned the name of that police officer who shot and killed this man in springfield. this is back in 2013 in august so about a year-and-a-half ago. the officer's name is adam torres. he's an eight-year veteran of the force, on administrative duty. the report just released says that john gear began to lower his hands during a standoff at his home again, in august of 2013. police have been called out there for domestic dispute. at that point, torres fired a single shot hit gear. gear backed into the home and shut the front door. officers say gear did not respond to their calls, trying to get him some medical help. they eventually broke down that front door and found him dead inside the house. they also found a loaded and holstered gun on the landing of the stairs. that was to gear's left. and seven more firearms also located inside that house. shomari stone is in fairfax county tonight, and will have a live update. >>> jayson wert

news 4 richard jordan is live outside the arlington county justice center with more on how police found the suspected driver. richard? >> reporter: barbara, it was video from the scene that led police officers to the suspect's home. now she's here in jail. she's been booked, and being held without bond 39-year-old alexandra mennes from fairfax. she was identified and admitted to being involved in the crime and she did not resist arrest but tuesday police detectives say she attempted to take off. she was trying to park in a parking lot right in front of an auto dealership on columbia pike and monroe street. came in through the exit. then attempted a three-point turn hitting some vehicles when people from inside the dealership came outside, tried to stop her. the owner of the dealership was trying to close some gates to lock her in but arlington county police say that mendez drove her car into those gates, opening them wide open knocking the man to the ground then after hesitating a few seconds, she hit the gas, ran him over a second victim had his foot run over as well. all of this caugh

richard jordan at the live desk for that. >> reporter: good morning. just learned the family members of the woman who died shortly after being rescued from a smoke-filled metro train file add lawsuit against metro for $50 million. carol glover's two sons named in that lawsuit. the 61-year-old woman died january 12th from smoke inhalation trapped inside a smoke-filled train about 45 minutes. the family hired lawyer patrick reagan who represented other family members back in 2009 after the deadly crash on metro's redline. about 80 other people also got sick in that underground emergency earlier this month. some of them filing separate lawsuits as well but the breaking news just getting, carol glover's family now seeking $50 million from metro, barbara? >> thank you, richard. >>> learning more about a similar incident that happened on boston's subway system. take a look at these new pictures. a group of riders smashed six windows to escape a train that filled up with smoke yesterday. the agency blamed the smoke on a propulsion system failure saying riders

richard jordan is following overnight developments at the live desk. >> the federal investigators were able to take a look at the train at the tracks. they've made initial assessments. the ntsb saying that the yellow line train was going south toward virginia when it suddenly stopped. no one knows where ss why it stopped. it stopped 800 feet beyond the station's platform. the train did not rerail and there was not a fire. smoke filled the train and people started to self-evacuate. early this morning it was transferred to metro so they can get on with the morning commute. investigators are looking at what is called arcing or a flash over. this is when power from one source is picked up by another conductor. it looks like the high voltage third rail could have been the water, the other conductor. there was about half an inch of water by the tracks. >> sometimes you'll see if you've ever ridden the metro as the train is leaving the station you see -- that's a very short and sort of normal arc that you might see. but in certain cases, that arc can start sort of feeding on itself and genera
