so even though the richmond secession convention has voted to take virginia out of the union, the vote gets to go to the people in late may of 1861. and so delegates go back to their home counties and one of the first things that starts to gain traction is to hold a meeting up in the northern panhandle of west virginia in wheeling at what's known as the first of several wheeling convention. since this is the meetings that will create the current state we are residing in. at that first meeting, one of the key figures that we've talked about, john carlisle from harrison county, who was a leader of this sort of statewide push, noted pretty dramatic early on. let us act, let us repudiate these monstrous years through patience. let us show our loyalty to virginia and the union and let us maintain ourselves in a union at every hazard. it is useless to cry peace when there is no peace. and for for i for one will repeat what was said by one of virginia's noble sons and great statement give me liberty or give me death. though kind of suggesting that we're we want tstay loyal we want to stay in

just in the last three years, chevron in my community of richmond, they flared over 50 times, creatingblack smoke in the communities, cars, playgrounds, and we also can look at over the last three years, the bay area air quality management district that regulates air has had 400 notices of violations at the different refineries, most recently we had the valero refinery that was given a $1.2 million penalty. this is to a multibillion- dollar corporation, this is not actually going to go to the communities that harms, it doesn't go to protective care for the community, it actually is disrespectful to the communities that live in that area and are seeing the cause and that health impacts directly, and of course most recently, in martinez earlier this year communities were told not to eat any of the produce for the next four months, for that which had been grown in the martinez area, because of the facility admitted 20 tons of dust that was a fine white powder dust over schools, over mes, over playgrounds as well, and so, the impact for us is every day, it is real, we have young children b

richmond mayor dave snow. we want to provide information this morning about a fire that began yesterday. at the site that you're seeing behind me. this is a very large sign. that previously was a business that collected plastics and other materials for the purpose of recycling and resell great indoor and outdoor site and so when this fire broke out, it spread through both the structures on the site and the outdoor storage that was on site. we have been working throughout the day yesterday and throughout the overnight to get the fire under control. we have a lot of information share with you. i have here city county and state officials that will each provide you with updates from their respective offices. i want to begin with richmond fire chief tim brown to give you an update on the current containment of the fire and next steps and continuing to put the fire down. good morning. we received the call yesterday morning or yesterday afternoon at 14 40. 3 58 northwest f street and reference to the structure fire.

[music] >> i don't think you need to be an expert to look around and see the increasing frequency of fires throughout california. they are continuing at an ever-increasing rate every summer, and as we all know, the drought continues and huge shortages of water right now. i don't think you have to be an expert to see the impact. when people create greenhouse gases, we are doing so by different activities like burning fossil fuels and letting off carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and we also do this with food waste. when we waste solid food and leave it in the landfill, it puts methane gas into the atmosphere and that accelerates the rate at which we are warming our planet and makes all the effects of climate change worse. the good news is there are a lot of things that you can be doing, particularly composting and the added benefit is when the compost is actually applied to the soil, it has the ability to reverse climate change by pulling carbon out of the atmosphere and into the soil
