let's go to chief meteorologist rick reichmuth.n across parts of the high plains over the last few weeks, it's helped the drought, but now we're getting too much moisture. take a look at the weather map, we saw severe weather across wyoming, overnight across parts of nebraska, today we'll see more severe weather across minnesota and and iowa. the northeast, it is the going to be a gloomy weekend across much of the northeast, and a lot of this coming week we have some drought that's been developing rapidly, so this is good news. we're going to to yet some good poise chuture but, unfortunately, it's going to fall too quickly. down across the south, two weeks straight of record-breaking temperatures and probably another 10-12 days ahead at least of this. high temperatures are going to continue here, will. not good news. it's going to be a developing story as we move forward. and, by the way, we're also watching the tropics, two storms that are not going to to impact land but a busy, early start to hurricane season. will, back to you i

to rick reichmuth. what are we looking at, rick? >> not only is it abnormal to be the c-named storms, it's where they are that is abnormal. they've been forming in the open atlantic. the waves that came off the coast of africa. that generally happens to mid september, we get into that type of tropical development. so getting there, we've never had two that formed to the east of the lesser antilles. all forming in a time that we might be looking at a lower than average season. currently, we have bret, cindy. there's no real threat to land for this. we've had some strong wind gusts. if you throw up weather max 16 behind me, i can show you what's going on here. wind gusts of 69 miles an hour in st. lucia. bret, down across parts of the atlantic. it will continue to pull off to the west. it will dissipate by the time it has any more interaction with land. that's good news. cindy will stay out over the open water. so we don't have to worry about this. getting two storms that have form in the atlantic basin to the east of the lesser antil

rick reichmuth here on what to make of it all. rick?> it's going to be the summer of this, i think. here's the reason. 19.3 million acres have burned in canada already. worse that we've seen since 1995 where they had 17.5 million. we're worse than that. very significant fire season. that amount of acres burning and also this early in the season. they had a very dry winter and hot summer last summer. because of that, all of this smoke right here is coming down from canada. the fires, by the way, all across canada, western canada, eastern canada, central canada. because of that, we have the air quality alerts. that's settling down in places like birmingham, alabama and atlanta, georgia have air quality alerts in effect. take a look at this air quality. anywhere you see orange, it's unhealthy for sensitive groups. the red, unhealthy for everybody. the purple, it's very unhealthy and hazardous, which we have a couple of spots of hazardous around areas in to ohio. so a lot of visibility right now. very significant visibility drops. the bigge

let's turn now to the chief, chief meteorologist rick reichmuth.now, today we're probably going to see some more. you see this warm air? that's part of the ingredients here. it's been so hot in texas, no relief at all. but this effort, area of disturbance, that's going to bring kind of the fiery weather throughout the day today. one line of storms cutting through indiana and illinois, that will fire again later in the day. a that as move -- as that moveses out, we'll see more thunderstorms. today's storms, tomorrow we have the storm continue to pull off toward the east, but want to notice this for today's tornado threat, especially right here where you see all of these polka dots, potential for large tornadoes there. so you're going to the want to watch the closely. that that's going to start in the early afternoon. tomorrow that threat moves farther towards the east, even up towards new york and down towards the carolinas, looking at the potential for severe weather for tomorrow. more tornadoes certainly in store, definitely some really strong win

let's go to rick reichmuth with the fox. 6 forecast. >> the beginning of hurricane season was thursdayly move but it will impact cuba a little bit. we are not talking a big wind event, it will dissipate by the end of the day today. look at what we are expecting, fairly average season. two reasons, one can we have really warm waters off the coast of south america in the pacific, that's el niÑo and that makes us have less storms and warm waters in the atlantic. this week we had the highest water temperatures across the ocean basins ever. and now we've got those warm temperatures. which battle, who winds from that battle will determine. because of that we are calling for an average season. showers across florida could cause flooding. take a look at this across the west, in west texas we see a lot of rain in west texas, ultimately good news, too much too quickly, got some flooding but this is one area of the country with significant drought going on and a lot more rain coming get to the area. rachel: chicago residents pushing back on the city council's decision to provide a massive aid pac

let's go to chief meteorologist rick reichmuth. >> reporter: this map, south america, see that warm watertropical activity across the atlantic ocean but these water temperatures are so warm right now, 7 to 8 ° above where it should typically be this time of year and because of that we've had two storms that developed out of this open atlantic, that's not where we normally see hurricanes or tropical storms this time of year. neither of these will impact any more land, both these storms will dissipate before getting close to land. but very strange we are seeing this activity this early in hurricane season. the other story we are watching again this week, we are two weeks into this heatwave across texas and much of texas, incredibly hot and humid, the heat indices, one hundred 20, 14 temperature records broken across texas and we probably have 10 to 12 days of this heat that will continue to heat this area. watch this carefully across texas. it just gets worse and worse as it cumulatively begins to affect people. sent it over to you. pete: good to see you this morning. attorney general merri

let's turn now to chief meteorologist rick reichmuth for our fox weather forecast. rick? so many people across the country. take a look at the weather maps. we have a lot of heat out there in fact it's going to become a really big story this week. we're already 11 days into a heat wave across a lot of texas and louisiana, and this continues for as kind of as long out as our models go so another 10-12 days still looking at temperatures in the triple digits and really humid. we also have a lot more moisture coming in not as much out across the west, in fact monsoon activity should start kind of close to now. we're not seeing signs of that just yet, but watch what happens this week across parts of the northeast. very heavy rain is going to fall across areas from pennsylvania upstate new york throughout much of new england. some spots three-to-five inches if you isolated spots more than that and that means flooding concerns. there has been a lot of drought that's developed rapidly across parts of the great lakes and northeast this will help but getting too much too quickly. a

rick reichmuth has more from the fox weather center. that time of year, this is weird what we're seeing right now. this feels kind of like a spring severe weather season right now. what we've been seeing maybe in april or early may. not what we've seen in june. this is yesterday. take a look at these storm reports here. tornado reports down across georgia, especially, but a lot of strong wind and hail reports yesterday. that was yesterday. now today. we're seeing a repeat of storms across the same area. we've seen it the last four days. we have another three days to get through this. because of this prolonged period of severe weather each day forming in the same spot, that also increases our flood threat as well. take a look at today, down here to the southeast. you can see this lightning and these really strong storms. that's exacerbating the threat for flooding. a bigger threat for severe weather across parts of the central plains. this is where we're likely going to be talking about significant hail. we've had hail today, baseball siz

look forward to having rick reichmuth on. he can make sense of the world. very hot in new york. i can't wait to watch your interview tomorrow that will be fascinating. you're right. we have tropical storm arlene. this is a storm normally we see storms move north or to the east. this storm actually not going in that direction at all. it's going to move off to the south here. as it does, it will hit some winds and break it apart. we don't have any significant concerns from our first named storm other than enhanced rainfall amounts across florida that has had some rainy weeks. let's talk about the hurricane season, which started this week on thursday. june 1. day one of hurricane season. there's a few things we're watching for this year to see if we see more activity. one of them is you'll hear us talk about i'll nino. that's where we get warmer water as cross the coast of south america. that's in place. not in fully effect yet but will see a significant el nino event. when that happens, it makes for hostile upper level winds. generally you'd say this is probably a less active seas
