senator rick santorum and chief economist at moody.irsten, i want to start with you with a basic question. you look at the collection of statements and comments just today, block out the rest of the week, look at today. are these rational decisions by this president? >> well, i mean, i think that i talk about the impact of his decisions and i think the impact is not -- it obviously not helping the economy as something he's been told repeatedly in terms of the tariffs that this is a major problem and i'm sure he's hearing it from even sole of his republican supporters. there was a survey, you know, a few days ago where three out of four of the top economists in the country said they fear that we were headed for a recession and they said that because of the trade war with china. for him to be doubling down on this, it doesn't seem particularly rational, but i -- you know, i've kind of given up trying to figure out what motivates him to do these kinds of things. >> senator santorum, the other thing president trump has repeatedly praised,

outfront now rick santorum and former democratic governor of michigan. thanks for being here. if the white house is discussing a payroll tax cut, how do you square that with really the glowing statements on the economy and the basically complete dismissile of concerns about that very same economy we're hearing from the white house? >> i think the president understands that we've had a very strong economy for the last few years and has picked up since the obama administration and has done positive things like regulatory cuts and tax cuts. but there are signs and he admitted today that this war that he's engaged in with china, it's a battle that's having an impact. it's creating uncertainty in the markets and business investment and is probably knocking off a couple of 10ths of a point off gdp and is slowing down the economy a little bit. he's trying to look at things that may counter that. i would say this. i have to give the president credit. president obama didn't take on china. the economy wasn't that strong. president bush didn't take on china. jennifer knows, because she's

outfront now, aurora our senior political commentator rick santorum and scott ridgel from virginia.ongressman, let me start with you. you think mitch mcconnell is not on the right side here in terms of not moving anything forward. >> mitch mcconnell is consistently opposed anything that makes sense. and i'm convinced he is the leading opponent to any type of rational legislation. the president himself has given himself a little bit of room with the red flag laws. and i think that that's going to make some sense. only 14 states have red flag laws. sadlymy state of virginia is not among them. i'm convinced that's common ground. even that common ground may not make it through mitch mcconnell's senate. what's the reason he just says no? is it personal belief? he doesn't think there should be anything. >> my own experience with the nra is this. i proposed in 2013 some very benign legislation with respect to gun traffickers and straw purchasers. these are by definition criminals. and shouldn't have guns. and i -- we did bi camerale or bipartisan legislation that would have addressed this.

i talked to rick santorum last night who is dead set against the president hosting the g7 next year at his country club in florida. santorum said hell no that that's a good idea. he thinks it's a terrible idea. do you think this is the last we'll hear of this? kwha what happens if the president keeps pushing the idea of hosting the g7 there? >> i believe he'll keep pushing it, and it will be held there because that's what he wants. in decisions where he gets to decide, he does what he wants and he doesn't really care about the backlash. it's a terrible look to the rest of the world. you know, there are -- most presidents want to showcase what's best of america or what's best of france. you know, trump wants to take the rest of the world to a second rate golf resort in florida, which tells you about trump. so i think he'll keep doing it. one other thing on china and strategy, i have to just tell you, having been in the white house, it's not a strategy. a strategy would be the president would say something even if it was, you know, sort of, you know, back and forth, and his staff would b

discuss this former prosecutor chief legal analyst djibouti and also senior political commentator rick santorumtor santorum, do you agree with pelosi that there is an opportunity to work in a bipartisan way to pass background check legislation? i mean, is there an appetite for that on the republican side of the aisle? >> i think it's really interesting that she said we'll work in a bipartisan way to do what we want, which is to pass our agenda. not a bipartisan way to actually try to solve the broader problem of how we limit what is this, you know, increasing violence, you know, mass shootings, which involves a whole variety of things that there actually are bipartisan ideas around. she didn't say that. she said, you have to pass what we want and be bipartisan about it, as opposed to, let's actually try to work together and see if we can come up with a package of things that may include some amount of gun control or red flag laws as a package of things to address this issue. i think that would have been a more, frankly, less political and more productive way of addressing the issue. >> jeff? i

about our elections, how is it that nobody in the white house and no republican except finally rick santorum speaking -- i mean, where are these people and what planet are they on? what could be the strategy for any trump supporter to stand by this relationship? >> i mean, i think, mika, you put it exactly right. it's kind of he has this envy of president putin and he will not be deterred. you know, there's been a lot of whether putin has something on him, whether he's bribing him or what, i think it's the putin envy. he doesn't have a real constituency in the country because he does everything kind of by fiat and force. that's the kind of leader, no protest, no acrimony from the people, that's the kind of leader president trump wants to be and the reason why the republicans don't say something i think is pretty simple. i think they're just putting party over country and, you know, it's a pretty sad thing. you would think some of the conservatives, the party of ronald reagan, would say something more about, you know, a country like russia which they say out loud is interfering in the u.s. el
