people of florida clearly didn't trust rick scott running their state. he did the wrong thing by not expanding medicaid. let's get back to trust for a moment and let's connect it to immigration. first of all, the republicans don't want anything to do with immigration reform because it's just simply not their people. they don't have the demographics on their side, and they don't know what to do. so the best thing to do is just to block it. they have gerrymandered the house to the point they can hold the house for who knows how long at this point. hopefully someday in their world they can buy the senate and they'll ride it out to see if they can get somebody in the white house again. they have put the house to a position where it's going to be very hard for the democrats to win it. i'm not saying it can't be done. but if immigration reform were to start, it would make them gerrymander all over again. that's why i think priorities usa action, the story we ran on friday, they're making a huge mistake by just talking 2016 and not going after the house. now's

rick scott, no income tax in florida. tax in new york state, and i see estimates between your rainy day fund, your state surplus, you have anywhere between 8 and $12 billion without a state income tax for a rainy day? $12 billion? how much is it? >> it really is pretty simple. closer to 12 than it is 8. and the fact is, don't spend all the money we put on good policies into place. we put an environment that says we're not going to take more of your money away from you, we're going to have a predictable and stable regulatory climate. we're not going to allow frivolous lawsuits to go forward, if you expand your business, you know there's going to be a skilled workforce. that's a formula that will work. it will work in new york, it will work in california it's working in places like florida, louisiana and texas. >> this is the thing to me, the republicans just gave the president a blank check until march of 2015, they demanded nothing in terms of the debt ceiling and giving the money to the president. i don't see them out th

>> first of all, i was at that board of fund raiser and we were waiting for rick scott to come in. it was very, very memorable to not see that suv go in the front door, watch it go through a side entrance. i think what's happening is not that republican governors are advocating for chris christie to step down as head of the party, we wept looking for that sentiment and didn't find it, not right now. what's telling is the level of unease of republicans at the state level given what chris christie is going through in terms of public appearances with him. we don't see the republican leaders clamor the way they did many the past for a chance to be seen with him. one of the reasons chris christie was put in this really important post particularly as republicans face elections throughout 2014, 22 seats they'll want to defend across the country, was that he's a star, was that he has such a presence in the room. and what we're seeing now is that he's cloistered in these private rooms behind closed doors. so we're not yet seeing the promise of chris christie the brash face of republican gov

yesterday, i asked rick scott repeatedly if he would back the bill or veto it. do you think she should sign or veto that bill? >> chuck, i've not seen that bill. what i'm focused on, they have spring training teams -- >> as governor of florida, would you raid those spring training teams using that bill as an excuse? >> again, chuck, i haven't seen the bill. >> you think a bill like that of religious beliefs should be used as a basis that somebody -- of denying services to a gay couple? >> chuck, i haven't seen -- i haven't seen the bill. >> so after being hammered all day by democrats, including charlie crist's gubernatorial campaign, scott released a lengthy statement before the veto happened, saying, this, i don't want to tell governor brewer what to do. she can do what's best for her state. from my understanding of that bill, i would veto it in florida, because it seems unnecessary. other states can spend their time fighting overer shoes like this, but in florida we're laser-focused on creating jobs. it's clear democrats will seize on issues like this one in

that would be the governor's race, one that turns an entrepreneur against rick scott turned democratrist. he may have an advantage over scott, one of the least popular governors in the country. one more thing on this race. it could be one of the most expensive in history. not just florida's history. in any state election. scott set the record by spending $73 million of his own money in 2010 and chris warrens, he could spend $100 million, part of the democrats' push to get up their financial house in order, as well. they may spend up to $75 million. mark caputo is the political reporter for "the miami herald." he joins me now. mark, it's quite a couple of rates you have to cover this year. bellwether races in many ways. let's start with the special election. what have you been watching on the ground? we see both candidates are desperate not to have this race nationalized, but it seems like it's been nationalized. >> it's definitely been nationalized. the amount of anti-obamacare messaging by republican and conservative groups has been rather high. it will be an interesting test to see

instead, rick scott spent the weekend avoiding a public appearance with christie. then there was christie's trip to texas last week where both the current governor and the man who hopes to succeed him stayed away from christie. >> chris christie in town. republican governors association. rick perry, greg abbott, nowhere to be found. >> and tomorrow, christie heads to chicago, illinois, where all four republican candidates running for governor in the state are taking a pass on seeing him. after winning a second term in a blue state, chris christie was supposed to be the face of a resurgent gop across the country. instead, he has turned into the poster boy for buyer beware. >>> joining me now, former governor of ohio, ted strickland. he's a democrat. governor, how important are these two bodies? the rga and the dga? the democratic counterpart. how important are they particularly in midterm years for raising money, raising visibility and getting folks elected at the state level? >> very important. i mean, both the rga and the dga put considerable money into these camp

when he left office he was replaced by governor rick scott who rescinded that policy. so we've had back and forth on this issue over the last few years. but over time people recognize this blanket disenfranchisement does not make sense. 50 years ago people had lifetime disenfranchisement for those who have committed a felony. now it is 5%. recidivism increases if you don't let people vote. over time we're seeing greater liberalization, and i expect that to happen. >> in the florida example, doing something by executive order may have some appeal, because you get it done right away, but it becomes reversible once someone else becomes governor. >> yes, i think so. where governor mcdonald said anyone convicted of a non-violent crime would almost have an automatic restoration process. the problem is even though it was a vigorous campaign, 8,000 people had their rights restored, this is a population of 300,000 people who completed their sentences and can't vote. any time we do this on a piecemeal basis it's never going to get to the level of what the problem is all about. w

t tom's first target will be governor rick scott in florida.he size of his political organization could rifle the network of charles and david koch. >>> it has been five years since president obama signed his $800 billion stimulus plan to jump-start the american economy. and five years later, the jury is still out on whether it made a difference in the recovery. the white house celebrated the anniversary by releasing a report that touts the plan's successes. and that does include 1.6 million jobs created or saved between the years 2009 and 2012. unemployment has dropped from 10% in october of 2009 to 6.6% now. and the report also pointed out the real world impact of the spending including the improvement of 40,000 miles of road, 2700 bridges, and bringing high speed internet to 20,000 community institutions including schools. the bill passed in 2009 with only three republican votes across both chambers and the party's sour opinion of the recovery act hasn't changed. mitch mcconnell called the law a tragedy and ted cruz took to twitter to mock t
