. >> so quickly the latest reporting on jeff sessions, to you, rick, multiple white house officials,ncluding count dill don mcgan, they urged him to not recuse himself, nbc is following an article saying the president was the one arc straighting that effort him all of this feeding concerns about potential obstruction of justice. how are republicans making sense of this? >> look. i think the president has a point. if jeff sessions is going to recuse himself in the russian investigation, which was he was wholly right to do. he ned to do that. he's a potential witness. he testified with russian, even though he didn't he should have taken the job him if he didn't take the job, we wouldn't have a democrat in alabama seat. we wouldn't have the mueller investigation. there is a lot of things. all these things fall back on the president. it's his fault that all these things have happened. but, you know, jeff sessions should have recuse himself and you know he's there, we'll see how it goes forward. >> okay. we will certainly see you guys again, that will be rick, joe, zerlina, i got it right

. >> joining me now is nbc kristen welker at the white house, along with rick stangle.nd still with me, political analyst josh earnest, press secretary to president obama. kristin, for the president and two of his senate defenders to say this didn't happen, first of all, these are two senators who said that they couldn't remember anything. now they're saying it never happened in a very lawyerly well. we'll get more on that later in the show. but they're basically saying that dick durbin is a liar, lindsey graham, who confirmed all of this to his colleague tim scott, and our own reporting. >> it is significant, andrea, that the account by those two republican senators has changed. initially they said they couldn't remember exactly what was said in that meeting, and then over the weekend, they said the president didn't make those comments. of course, president trump himself acknowledged that he used strong language. we've asked the white house to get specific about what strong language he used, and we haven't gotten any specifics yet. the homeland security secretary over

that said, one vital to this cos that the white house has not been consistent with what they had sooer senior staff do when they go before a committee. rick deerborn, who's currently the deputy white house chief of staff answered questions from members that he didn't say there was any executive privilege or any areas he wasn't allowed to talk about, that he was candid in a way that many members found to be heartening but also extremely out of step with the message the white house has been sending. so it seems like, this will probably not shock folks to hear, the white house's planning for these hearings is not as organized and put together as folks in the white house may have hoped it would be. the result is we're seeing the president's legal team and the white house legal team be caught flat-footed again and again. what that means for bannon talking to mueller is it's tough to game out how ready they'll be from a defense perspective for any information that bannon gives special counsel. >> it does sound chaotic that there's someone who does have grounds for claiming executive privilege, who doesn't at all, and then two other people who h

my colleague also broke the news, wolf, that rick gates has hired a new white-collar attorney. that's a signal that perhaps he's changing his strategy to his not guilty plea and negotiating behind the scenes with robert mueller. rick gates was a former campaign aide, trump campaign aide, close to paul manafort, who was also charged and pleaded not guilty. all of this -- as we learn all of this, wo, we're also learning about a conversation the president in the oval office with andrew mccabe, where he reportedly asked him who he voted for, and mccabe -- that made mccabe feel uncomfortable. the president has been very outspoken on twitter about that. in fact, the attorney general jeff sessions, according to sources, went to christopher wray, the fbi director, asking him to remove his top leadership, including andrew mccabe. when you look at the big picture here, now 17 former and current administration officials have now been interviewed by robert mueller. of course, the next big interview will be waiting for is the interview with the president. if and when that happens, only time

cnn has learned the former campaign aide rick gates has offered a white collar defense attorney to his defense team. that attorney was seen last week at special counsel mueller's office, suggesting that there is an ongoing negotiation between the defendant's team and the prosecutor's. at this stage with gates' charges filed and bail set, the talks could concern both those charges and gates' plea. now to be clear, should a deal be worked out? it will mean he has cooperation of one more insider. gates pled not guilty to eight charges of money laundering and other businesses. his long-time business partner the former trump chairman paul manafort pleaded not guilty as well to nine counts in the same cases. galts, none of the attorneys involved were the special counsel. we reached out and none could comment for this story. >> michael, how significant is this that mueller may have the cooperation of another trump insider? >> well, we don't know for sure it involves cooperation. it could be tom green, the white house new lawyer for gates has been reported by cnn is just trying to strike a dee

senior white house aide rick dearborne set to testify this hour and corey liewandowski wil appear before panel and hicks could get the call on friday. shimon, what else do we know about steve bannon coming back before the intel committee for a second time? >> reporter: right, brian tha b, that's supposed to happen tomorrow, that he is expected to appear before them tomorrow. as to whether or not anything will change in terms of the questions they specifically have for him, relating to the transition and to the time he was at the white house, it's unclear if he's going to answer any of those questions. it's really not up to him. he claims it's up to the white house. he's claiming that they essentially gagged him and told him he could not speak about that time period. more importantly though, i think is the special counsel his appearance before the special counsel, when that will happen. that's going to be a significant time period. he will not be able to claim executive privilege in that case when he appears before the special counsel because if he does get into a place where he starts re
