the frank rizzo statue in front of the municipal services building will soon have a new home. >> rizzo was a bully. you know. that's the way i feel about it. i'm not italian, i'm a black american. >> reporter: in a statement, managing director for the city said earlier this year we initiated a call for ideas on the future of the rizzo statue. we carefully reviewed and considered everyone's viewpoints and we have come to the decision that the rizzo statue will be moved to a different location. frank rizzo rose up through the ranks of the philadelphia police department and served as the city's mayor from 1972 to 1980. while he is known for decades of service to the city, many associate him with racism and minority oppression. calls for the statue's removal escalated this summer after a deadly white nationalist rally in charlottesville. the rizzo statue was egged and a man was arrested after the statue was spray painted with the words black power. city council member helen gym. her statement: >>> but not everyone is happy about the move. dorothy whelan told us frank rizzo was her daughter

frank rizzo jr. tells me he's disappointed in the process, that his 101-year-old mother found out about this from a neighbor, not from a city official who could have picked up a phone and made a call. frank rizzo jr. is part of a group that has made a formal request to make their pitch to keep the statue here. they now want a hearing to do that. in the meantime, others we spoke to in philadelphia are applauding this move. >> i think it's an absolutely great decision. >> reporter: the fate of frank rizzo to remove and relocate him was on the lips of philadelphians who passed by the statue today. >> none of his leadership, left black folks suffer. >> this is a main thorough fare for people and naugot looking at day in and day out. >> reporter: also weighing in is the sculper who crafts the likeness of many famous figures. he tells me the city never consulted him. in his opinion, letting the statue stand here and enhancing it with other art work could be a way to move forward. >> have a plaque there tha
