joining me now to discuss, michael steele, former rnc chair and host of the michael steele podcast and tara palmieri, politico playbook co-author. you have known kevin mccarthy for a long time. who is this guy? what is motivating him, and maybe this is a leading question, will he do anything to get that speaker's gavel? >> well, that's kind of been the knock on kevin for quite a while within the caucus. he's kind of like the last man standing for the positions that he's held. much of the frustration of a lot of republicans in the caucus during that time. so, yeah, he's very ambitious and very calculating. as the sound bites you played showed. you know, he comes out on january 6th and says, yes, the president bears some responsibility. but then when he's asked about it later on he goes, well, he had nothing really to do with it, as he said. so he figures out just where the line is, and he gets right as close as he can to it without tipping the hand against him. in some sense he's a lot like donald trump. it is all about him. and i think that's one of the things that have rubbed folks in

he also approached the rnc several months ago asking for giuliani to get paid and he still hasn't gottent, it appear to be a guarantee that he is going to get any kind of financial assistance. the bills are piling yoe ie ing. these kind of fights cost a lot of money. >> what does this tell you, paula, about the financial peril that giuliani may be in right now? >> i spoke with a close associate of the former mayor. he tells me right now he's doing okay in the wake of these raids but giuliani is frustrated and concerned about his legal bills not just for the ongoing criminal investigation in new york, but he's also facing several lawsuits. this associate confirms it will likely cost him several million dollars to defend himself in that criminal investigation in new york. at this point, of course, he has not been charged with any crimes, but we know he's under investigation for possible foreign lobbying violations. we know when people can't defend themselves in a trial, they often have to enter plea deals. >> his home and office were raided by the fbi in recent days as well. let's discuss

anyways, we had these pipe bombs, chief contee placed at the rnc and dnc headquarters. obviously to me that was a preplanned attack. would you agree? and also, when you responded to the pipe bombs, do you know what your motivations were or have you identified who the perpetrators were? >> yes, to answer your question. i do think these things were preplanned. we know through investigation that these devices were sat out there, positioned out there by a lone individual. in terms of our response to that, the metropolitan police department responded along with federal assets to the threat. to mitigate the threat we were facing at that time. >> do you know if this individual or individuals had any contact or coordination with the people that entered the capitol? >> no, sir. at this point we do not know that. no one has been apprehended. that investigation continues on. >> the people that illegally entered the capitol, i've seen some reports. it looked like a lot of them had military-type apparel on, gas masks and so forth -- things like that. is that correct? >> that is accu
