rob mayeda in the weather center right now. but first to nbc bay area's marianne favro in morgan hill. >> reporter: i'm here at andy's orchard in morgan hill. normally he would rely on this pipeline to access thousands of gallons of water to irrigate his cherry trees and nectarines. but the santa clara valley water district cut him off on thursday. it's the first time since he started farming here in 1957 the district's cut off his supply indefinitely. he says some days he uses more than 40,000 gallons to irrigate his orchards. now he's forced to borrow water from a fellow farmer's well and he says he's frustrated others in the area are getting plenty of water to use for landscaping. >> our livelihood depends on having water whereas some of these people just have it for landscaping. so what's the more critical need? i don't know. that's for somebody else to judge. but from my own standpoint, i need water to continue in business. >> reporter: the water that's been shut off is federal surface water from the half road lateral pipe

and checking in now with rob mayeda.night in terms of the fireworks. >> we have clear skies, 73 degrees. we'll see temperatures in the mid-60s later on this evening toward 8:00. a different story as you look from the east bay over to san francisco. this is a little bit of an early arrival. can you see the low clouds, low enough to clip the tops of those buildings downtown, including the trans-america pyramid which means the base of these clouds, closer to 200, to 300 feet off the ground. this is patchy, low cloud cover. and we hope to get a break. you can see them move pretty quickly. right now plan on some fog there around san francisco. 62 degrees. and you can see the fog already all the way over towards emeryville and trying to get into oakland, but san jose and the south bay in the clear right now. and we'll continue to see clear skies for the south bay and now towards the tri valley. we have some gusty winds, close to 20. but it will be quite cool, 50s and 60s for fireworks for most of the bay area. except for danvi

rob mayeda is tracking what was behind this light show. but we begin with michelle roberts at the oakland coliseum which also took a hit. >> reporter: it took a power hit early this morning. people are here for the game that starts in about an hour. it is beautiful out here tonight. it's hard to believe it was a much different story early this morning. lightning danced across the bay area this morning. >> i was fast asleep, having a wonderful dream, when this immense boom awakened me. >> reporter: she says it was the loudest sound she's ever heard. a tree in the back yard hit by lightning and split in half. bill was in the shower when it happened. >> there was a flash that came out of the spout in the shower in the bathtub. and then we heard the big boom. and we didn't know what it was. there was debris flying all over the place. >> reporter: in oakland, lightning hit a power poil. the stadium briefly lost power along with dozens of pg&e customers. while the storm moved out quickly, the fire danger remains. crews spent much of the morning

. >>> searching for relief from the dry conditions in the bay area, we turn to meteorologist rob mayeda with our first look at the ert with. this is just a tough situation with no rain at all. >> from the east bay down the peninsula into the south bay, we are now officially in the driest time of the year. as we go from june, july, into august, the rainfall drops off. you expect that given we're now in the middle of summer. what you might not expect is that in july, for san francisco, normally you don't pick up any measurable rainfall. august and september, there's a better chance of seeing that. what's unique about the weather picture this weekend, we could break the climatological rule. a lot of monsoon moisture coming up out of the south. high clouds will come in and it sets us up for a chance of not only seeing increased humidity. we will see a chance overnight of seeing a few showers and possibly some coastal mount range thundershowers, too. we'll talk about that in the forecast in a few minutes. >>> gunfire in san francisco's mission district early this morning, police are searchin

when we're outside enjoying the beautiful summer weather, for a long at the danger let's talk to rob mayeda. >>> and we're looking at high temperatures and wind, in solano county, and fairfield, 74 degrees, sacramento, seabreeze bringing up the winds by the time the fire started. the dry air aloft is like a hair dryer, as the humidity is close to the sea level. and towards fairfield the numbers will likely drop a little bit more tomorrow as high pressure strengthens. we'll feel more of the heat right here in the bay area as our own valleys make a run at close to 100 degrees. another thing to watch for fire danger could be the monsoonal moisture, and there could be lightning sparking the fire, the first forecast tomorrow. you will notice the temperatures climbing on up. today we had 80s inland, but by tomorrow we're looking at numbers south of downtown, san jose, 100 degrees in parts of the tri-valley, we'll look at the seven-day forecast coming up. back to you. >>> and be careful how much water you use, you could face a stiff penalty if you use too much. the board want s homeowners to slash

that was garvin thomas reporting. >>> transitioning over to meteorologist rob mayeda. he had that microclimate forecast. maybe some changes coming? >> yeah, starting to see some cooler changes in parts of the bay area right now. but still fairly hot south of downtown san jose. out by the airport, 82 degrees. areas south of downtown san jose in the 90s. san francisco starting to see the fog come back. 71 degrees right now. the drive across the golden gate bridge shows you the low clouds there. coming up just after 6:00, we've got the giants game coming up. should see temperatures hanging onto the low 70s for the start of the game, then dropping into the 60s. that sea breeze gusty at times as we approach 8:00 and then the winds backing off from the seventh through ninth innings. offshore, you see the low clouds in san francisco, but mid level clouds are going to be coming in. doesn't look like much on the satellite. but as we saw earlier this week, it doesn't take a lot of mid level moisture and some vertical motion provided by a weather system offshore to produce thunde

meteorologist rob mayeda is here with some of those temps. it will be hot. >> it will be. in fact, today we managed 90s out by livermore and south of san jose. the headlines moving forward, fog on the coast, some cooling in the extended forecast. but in the meantime as we head towards your sunday, we'll see hot temperatures in our inland valleys, including around the south bay towards the tri-valley. norm near 87 degrees in san jose. another spot we're checking for you. pleasonton near 97 degrees. temperatures up. so the heat is a big part of the story for the sunday forecast. but another thing to watch out for if you're going to head to the high country, increased risk for fire danger due to lightning strikes. thunderstorms moving up out of southern california and southern nevada heading towards the sierra and some of this moisture by monday could try spilling over towards the coastal mountains. so we'll look at how the impact of both the chance of thunder and the heat in the extended forecast will make on the next seven days coming up in your full forecast in just a few

rob mayeda's been watching that. i say no clouds but then i saw clouds. >> they're picking up on some of the changes in the the forecast that could get interesting for the mountains. first let's talk about those hot temperatures in some of the valleys. south of san jose we had mostly 80s around downtown. still 96 degrees around los gatos. morgan hill 92 right now. 96 in livermore. 97 out towards concord and walnut creek. north bay 80s to 90 in calistoga. 84 in santa rosa. what happens when you get the heat during the day in the sea breeze cranks up as warm air rises inland and creates that vacuum effect where cool air starts to spill inland toward the evening. windy around the bay area. let's talk about that mountain thundershower chance. for now it's over the sierra. we're seeing clouds. during the day tomorrow we'll continue to see the chances of thundershowers on the increase which if we don't get enough rain that could cause a few spot fires in the high country. some of that moisture is going to creep toward the

meteorologist rob mayeda joining us now. >> we're seeing the highest temperatures right now. solano county, fairfield still 92 degrees. closer to 100 degrees inland around sacramento. it's that late-day breeze that picked up winds 15 to 20 miles an hour coupled with lowering humidity levels as high pressure builds in. it does have a hair dryer-like effect to the air outside. really drying things out. around the central valley through the sack area, including fairfield. so we're going to have to watch out especially tomorrow as our temperatures are going to turn even hotter for monday. high pressure will strengthen as we get into the start of the work week which means 100-degree temperatures likely out towards the tri-valley tomorrow. another thing for fire danger we have to watch out for, monsoon moisture coming out of the south tuesday and wednesday. that could trigger lightning-sparked fires for the central and southern sierra as we head into tuesday, wednesday. a sneak preview of temps tomorrow, highs climbing into the 90s around san jose and towards santa rosa. temperatur

we want to send it over now to rob mayeda who's been watching this closely. we knew we'd be talking a lot about fires this summer. >> you can see the difference in conditions from one side of the bay to the other. it's cooler today but very dry in the hills. the temperature change for about 24 hours ago has dropped off a bit around san francisco and san jose. we're at 69 in san francisco right now. in the 80s or close to it in san jose. you can see about ten degrees cooler at this time. livermore beginning to cool down but still mid-90s inland. it's the areas south of san jose. the hilltops down there near almaden still in the 90s. so pretty hot and dry close to where that fire's been burning and around the east bay hills. seeing the temperatures closer to 100. starting to cool off in walnut creek. we'll see cooling changes as we begin to wrap up the weekend. but there's an interesting part of this weather forecast that could play out a little bit later tonight. we're watching an area of low pressure just offshoesh. and some of this has mid level moisture, on

. >>> let's bring in rob mayeda. is it good earthquake weather in san francisco? >> some might say it feels that way with all the humidity over the weekend. we had a few showers on saturday and sunday. and outside right now, 74 degrees. but it probably feels warmer than that due to the fact at that we have this mid-level moisture coming in south and west of the bay area. right now, strong sea breeze. that will knock our temperatures down and eventually pull some low clouds inland tonight and possibly give us misty skies around san francisco and the coast. but the humidity numbers are very impressive. typically this time of year in late, mid july, you see humidity in the teens or 20s. to be in the 50s to almost 60s in dewpoint is similar to what you might find in nebraska or oklahoma. it's being supplied by subtropical jet stream which is normally nowhere near us. if you go to the hawaiian islands, some of this moisture is being redirected to the bay aiss area. we did have a few showers this morning. but late tonight we'll see a chance of drizzle coming on in. and

rob mayeda joins us now to give us idea if we're going to see something like that in the bay area. >>eah, between the fog banks, we get the same effect with the sun shining over downtown sometimes. right now, 64 degrees. mostly sunny, breezy but the fog is starting to move back into san francisco. and it's already fairly cool in san jose. 70 degrees. today's highs in san jose, only in the mid-70s. we had mild conditions today and obviously the low clouds there on the coast. but at sunset tonight, we're all starting to see the high clouds coming in from our south and west with an upper level system offshore. more of that to come in your seven-day forecast, especially come monday and tuesday, we could see a chance of mountain showers coming back our way. but to recap the start of the weekend, mild saturday temperatures. not what you would expect especially for inland locations like livermore and morgan hill. low 80s for highs today. those locations will see about a 10-degree jump for your high temperatures tomorrow. san jose, only 73 degrees for today. but things are going to be changin

meteorologist rob mayeda, we could see maybe more drops tomorrow. >> i think so. what's interesting about the weather, you see all lightning we had about a few hours ago. moving from east to west fairly unusual. and around the south bay, around fremont we did have heavier showers around 7:00 tracking off to the west. not much over the bay area, but to the south we're watching another wave that's going to come through as we go into looks like tonight into tomorrow morning. this is very unusual. this is typically the driest time of the year as you go from june, july, into august. instead, obviously, we're seeing some showers right now which is very unusual considering san francisco usually doesn't measure any rain in the month of july. where it comes to climatology, we'll break the rule possibly again tomorrow. mild temperatures outside right now in the 60s. tomorrow, mostly sunny, muggy and yes, a slight chance of seeing a few more scattered showers but depending where you are, you will see varied amounts of shower possibilities. some of the hilltops have the best

." >>> and now rob mayeda is here with your forecast for you. >> we are seeing interesting conditionsout there. especially looking out near san jose over to the east of the hilltops. you are seeing clouds blow up sort of like macy's day balloons going for a ride in the east bay hills. over mount hamilton, you have towering cumulus clouds it is not producing any thunderstorm activity but it is quite a sight east of san jose. a cool 67 degrees in san francisco where the fog is the story there over san francisco. but you can see the lightning up in the sierra where the flash flood warning continues around yosemite. lightning to the east of gilroy and a few more up near lake county. what's interesting is some of the moisture from the sierra is drifting out to the west, but the showers are weakening as they get into napa county, solano county and also parts of sonoma county. this area right here from concord north into napa county will be the best bet for seeing ongoing showers for you this evening. meantime in the south bay, most of the shower threat will be on the hilltops as you can see

with that we turn to rob mayeda standing by. a nice and warm sunday. >> it has been. in fact, we've been seeing hot temperatures in the valleys today, especially around san jose, where you can see areas south of downtown soaring into the 90s. los gatos 95. 97 currently livermore. you can see 97 around walnut creek. 80s and 90s up towards the north bay. the heating of the day and the hot air rises, cool air from the ocean comes in to replace it. we have a windy evening right now. parts of the bay area that's not good news for fire danger. humidity at 66% in san francisco. the fog coming in. livermore, breezy, winds out of the west at 17, and the humidity it is 6% relative humidity in livermore. we're watching winds for you which will stay gusty through 8:00 tonight. complicating firefighting efforts perhaps around the state over the next 24 hours is the risk and an increasing risk of seeing mountain thundershowers, especially up towards the sierra, and then overnight we'll see some of this moisture trying to spill toward the bay area which we have to watch out for spot

let's bring our meteorologist rob mayeda and we're talking about this weather all summer. 18 month of dry weather across southern california where we're seeing the fires breaking out and the hottest and driest and windiest spots across northern california. let's zoom you in toward solano county and it's 86 degrees and there you see the temperatures closer to sacramento. the wind speeds have been gusty throughout the afternoon and up to close to 25 miles per hour and quickly fanning those flames off to the north and east and look at these humidity levels down into the lower 20% range. this is the story that will play out as the conditions we're seeing outside right now. more typical from what you would see at end of september. it's just that dry out there and around the bay area, too. specifically it's the tri-valley out toward livermore today that saw the temperatures start to climb up a few degrees and we'll have to watch for dry conditions and an elevated risk for fire danger and the winds across the bay area are pretty gusty and out toward the tri-valley in the teens and our temper

here is rob mayeda with your microclimate forecast. he is a special guy. 95. >> yes. story there. weather shaping up nice. especially around the south bay, we saw clear skies. san francisco we're seeing red white and blue out there, but the white is courtesy of the fog there over downtown right flow. you can see the beacon lit across the transamerica tower there overlooking downtown. but we've got lots of low clouds right now. over san francisco, in some of that may drop some mists for tomorrow morning. you can see from the east bay too, from emeryville, low clouds starting to spread across the bay. so we've had a sea breeze throughout the evening, which helped to bring in some of the low clouds across the bay right now. wind speed starting to back off a bit. but at least for the start of the weekend, we'll see a strong enough sea breeze to keep our temperatures from getting too hot. and the breeze is actually good news for air quality. at least to start the weekend, moderate. all the way around the bay area from north to south and out towards the coast. we'll see wha

. >>> let's throw things over to our meteorologist rob mayeda. the two microclimates the president will be wondering about, los altos. >> we'll see cloudy skies over palo alto heading over to los altos. those are the clouds that might drop a little bit of drizzle. but not lightning bolts. so that's some good news for the president who is in town for us tonight. you can see the mostly cloudy skies right now near palo alto. 65 degrees in san jose. still in the mid-60s for san francisco. so kind of mild temperatures out there right now. it was about 12 hours ago or so we saw measurable rainfall for parts of the bay area. in fact, these numbers very significant when you take into account we usually do not add up anything in the rain gauge for the month of july. but san francisco about 0.05. almaden a quick downpour, 0.06. san jose measurable rainfall earlier. the statistics for san francisco, this is the driest month of the year. we typically see a few monsoon showers once we get into august and september. and then the real rainy season gets started

we'll head over to meteorologist rob mayeda right now. >>> you can see the fog over towa towards oakland, down the coast. looking at visibilities at times less than a quarter mile. watch out for that as we go through the morning. by the afternoon we'll be talking about hot temperatures in our valleys and to give you a couple of examples of the hot temperatures inland today, san jose climbing up to 87 degrees. pleasanton later this afternoon up to 96. hot temperatures around the tri-valley. the risk of some mountain thundershowers today if you're going to head toward the sierra. high clouds coming in late today. partitive weather system that will increase thundershowers off to our east and as we head toward monday, some of that could approach the coastal range. that's one of the things we'll be watching in our forecast as we go through the afternoon. low clouds. san francisco toward oakland. high temperatures today again approaching 90 in san jose. upper 90s around morgan hill. we'll show you how hot it will get in the tri-valley locations and some other changes ahead in the seven-day for

. >>> meteorologist rob mayeda is here. >> we hope tuesday or wednesday for parts of the mountains around the coast. in the meantime, warm evening around the bay area. temperatures in the 60s for most of the bay area. compare that to 24 hours ago, you will see that inland areas like livermore still running more than ten degrees warmer than yesterday at this time. this is what happened. takes a while for things to cool off. minus a strong sea breeze. this is going to hit the ground running in terms of temperatures tomorrow morning. some of the hilltops will be close to 70 tomorrow morning. warming quickly into the afternoon. the winds are technically onshore but pretty weak out there. to lir livermore, for the morning. and we will likely not find any low clouds inland. unlike the last couple of morning, high pressure starts to strength then. the weather pattern is interesting on the extremes here of the west coast. heading up towards seattle and portland, big-time thunder tonight. another round of thunder moving into san diego and los angeles. swinging up from the south late tomorrow and t

meteorologist rob my mayeda is here. >> interesting changes offer to the east in san jose.e tropical clouds for our standards coming in from the sierra and bringing in a slight chance of showers, perhaps around the north by hilltops around the coastal mountains over the next couple days. right now temperatures cooling thanks to the strange sea breeze, especially obviously in san francisco where you've got some patchy low clouds and more sun now than we had early in the day. but still with the cool marine air rushing in, seeing numbers in the mid 60s right now. wind speeds up to 26 miles per hour in san francisco. but where the heat and the hot and dry conditions continue inland with the sea breeze, look at the humidity levels inland. 12% in livermore. where you seat green, that is where the marine air is felt the most and temperatures dropping through the 60s this evening. so enough of a breeze out there tomorrow. that air quality won't be too bad. moderate levels at ground level lows for the east bay in south bay and those numbers will improve as the sea breeze turns stron
