. >> we're already seen once where robert mueller has used rick gates in a case they brought.ick gates admitted he was involved with lying and a convicted felon because he pleads guilty. they still used him any way in the testimony. they had a lot of other evidence. they had message, e-mails and able to corroborate a lot of things they said. they're clearly not afraid of using somebody who admitted to crimes. >> michael cohen has taped the president. he's taped him. we don't know what other evidence he might have in his presentation. they've already called him useful and helpful. he's very honest about what he knows and what he does not know. >> i bet there's a lot of things they were able to seize in that swarn search warrant that michael cohen doesn't know michael cohen had with respect to different evidence and recordings he had. i imagine they would be more powerful and helpful to any sort of case. >> how is the white house rebasicir reacting to michael cohen's interview. i know they have tried to say he's a liar. the president has said a lot of things that were not true.

. >> reporter: the inaugural committee is not been asked for records or rick gates who has been cooperating with robert mueller has been questioned about inaugural committee spending. shannon: two big stories, the inauguration investigation and a federal judge's order the mueller team cough up key documents about michael flynn and targeted by the fbi. let's bring in harry litman, and use the congressman jason chaffetz. one of the questions we have about the flynn investigation is he was interviewed in january 2017. the documents that led to the fbi getting involved are 302, which is an assessment or compilation of what he said at the interview. it wasn't written, at least the one tagged by the courts until august 2017 raising questions whether there were other 302s that were modified or edited and the federal judge overseeing michael flynn at sentencing dropped a major bombshell. the timing of the rewrite shortly after fbi agent stzrok was removed from robert mueller's team after his anti-trump text messages came to light raises the possibility mueller wanted to scrub the evidence or was one of the two

rick gates was the deputy chairman of the inaugural committee and a long-time associate of paul manafort. he has also pleaded guilty to multiple felonies in robert mueller's russia investigation and is currently awaiting sentencing. rick gates has admitted that he personally may have pocketed some of the money that flowed through the inaugural committee that he helped to run, but the details of his involvement in the inauguration have always been a little cloudy, until now. quote, inaugural workers had other misgivings. rick gates, then the deputy to the chairman of the inaugural asked some vendors to take payments directly from donors rather than through the committee. according to people with direct knowledge. the vendors felt the request was unusual and concerning. so federal prosecutors are currently putting the trump inaugural under the microscope because they're peeling apart their finances to see if they broke the law when they raised and spent that enormous amount of money. what will happen when they reach the trump organization payments? this story is quickly becoming a live wire. expect more sparks. more ahead tonight. stay with us. ou

as ken pointed out the flynn sentencing is going forward and the gates' sentencing is not. that tells us that robert mueller feels he is done with mike flynn. so whatever information they need, they would have delayed the sentence after he has co completed the cooperation so that the person can earn credit and the pros ecutor has leverag over that person until they have completely completed the testimony, and it sound like he is done with mike flynn with national security adviser and russian and the sanctions, and that is one thing. the other is tying up loose ends and maybe and no doubt some things are coming to the close. we can get a hint of that by the fact that some of mueller's prosecutors have left the team and gone back to the day jobs and not replaced. but some things have to continue to play out. for one, we saw the release of jerome corsi of a proposed plea offer for him, and the fact that a plea offer was made means that robert mueller is going to be likely following through with charges against jerome corsi and if the goal is to flip him and get the cooperation, it could take months to

first, of course, is the investigation by robert mueller and his team, which has already ensnared paul manafort, gates, flynn, cohen, papadopoulos and three dozen russian nationals. then, there is the investigation into spending on trump's inauguration, which includes whether foreigners, funneled donations into trump's inaugural committee and a super pac to buy influence. this puts ivanka trump in this scandal. then we have individual one, aka donald trump, has shown up in court documents as the person who directed the commission of a felony, several felonies, and happened days before the election and that helped get him elected president. trump insists michael cohen alone should shoulder the blame for making illegal hush money payments to women who say they had affairs with trump, but cohen, who has been sentenced to three years in prison, has a very different story to tell. >> he's saying very clearly that he never directed you to do anything wrong. is that true? >> i don't think there is anybody that believes that. first of all, nothing at the trump organization was ever done unless it was run thro

gates. saying these are two separate issues. let's hear first from robertt should not have much of an impact. i can understand from the chinese perspective that they would see it that way. it is totally separate from anything i work on or anything that trade policy people in the administration work on. it is unrelated, it is criminal justice. the chinese have always been curious as to who to listen to in the united states. is it congress, president, judiciary? this is another muddying of the waters. rishaad: we have ayaz ebrahim from j.p. morgan. this?are we with is it possible you can keep one in isolation to the other and he can we then get something along the lines of an american businessman being arrested in china on some charge? certainly would agree. it will be difficult to separate the two. none of this is helpful. there is a believe that the and the markets are sensitive about that, for good reason. if the trade tensions escalate, i think we will have further impact on earnings. this will ultimately be the driver of equity prices. if we see a truce

robert mueller has already obtained kwiks of guilty pleas for the president's lawyer. we have the president's former campaign chairman, paul manafort, the vice chair of the campaign, mr. gates national security adviser, michael flynn, a number of other guilty pleas, a bunch of them are cooperating with the prosecutors. president trump fired the director of the fbi, james comey, in order to stop this investigation. he's repeatedly tried to fire robert mueller. he fired jeff sessions because jeff sessions wouldn't shut down the investigation. there's just no way that william barr can come into this job and oversee the investigation. he has to recuse. he's been appointed by the president at this juncture. if he thinks he's going to shut it down or control it in any way, it's not going to happen. if william barr does not recuse, he's going to be spending almost all of his time sitting in front of the united states house of representatives judiciary committee explaining himself. >> let me ask you this. because when attorney general jeff sessions recused himself, rod rosenstein took over the russia part of the investigation, and appointed bob mueller, the president constantly tal

talking about gates, we are talking about things that happened that had nothing to do with the campaign so, yes, the american people are ready to move on. heather: what do you think about that, robertcan people are ready to move on but yet the mueller investigation seems to be not the one willing to move on and wrap up? >> the good thing about criminal investigations, special counsel investigations in this case is it's not public opinion issue, they are getting to the root of a crime which may have taken place, coordination which may have taken place and we have to understand that it will be -- the probe will wrap up when it's ready to wrap up, when it's done. the fact that we say that they are taking plea deals on peripheral issues, lied to investigators and congress, it's a good thing probe is rooting out of system, it's good trying to -- heather: filing today. >> i'm a criminal defense attorney. you cannot force somebody to lie, there's either be truth or not be truth. you testify truthfully then you don't have to take a plea deal, won't be convicted of lying, that's the deep state that the american people voted against in 2016. that's what the mueller probe is doing, roling out

gates. and donald trump is fearful that any one of those people can hand bob mueller significant information about the president's knowledge and culpability on all of these matters. >> robert costa, i want to ask you about a couple of names floating around for ag. chris christie. he said on television, which is usually a way of making sure donald trump hears it is his understanding of the search for ag is whitaker is there to land the plane, land the mueller investigation. whether that's ftrue or not, tie will bear out. one of the leading names out there is william barr. your colleague aaron blake tweeted this. he said more clinton probes are needed. uranium one is more worthy of investigation than collusion. he said the comey firing was a-okay. that mueller's teams doanations are too left leaning and it's okay for presidents to request specific investigations. those are outside the mainstream, i think, of even republican legal thought. chris christie at least is against a few of those. shep smith at fox thinks uranium one is hokey-pokey. i guess that's what makes william barr such a strong candidate for attorney general in trump's mind. >> he doesn't have a personal relat

gates. >> the fbi has raided the office of donald trump's longtime lawyer michael cohen. >> trump's former campaign chief paul manafort has been hit with new charges involving witness tampering and obstruction of justice. >> robertr charged 12 russian military officers with a sustained wide-ranging cyberattack on this country's democratic process. >> one-two punch. the president's men guilty. a jury convicts his former campaign chairman paul manafort and michael cohen, the president's once closest aide pleads guilty. >> president trump has followed through on his promise to fire attorney general jeff sessions. >> president trump's former personal attorney and self-proclaimed fixer michael cohen entering a new plea deal with the special counsel robert mueller. >> prosecutors from the president's own justice department today straight up accused him of engaging in a felony. >> michael cohen, the president's former attorney and personal fixer was sentenced to 36 months. >> a federal judge just shut down michael flynn's attacks on the fbi. >> and by the looks of it, there will be no slowing down for mueller and his team in 2019. in the first couple of months of the year, we'll hear from manafort's team on whether or

now about the inauguration investigation where rick gates is helping the southern district and we know that michael cohen has been meeting with robert think there's a lot more collaboration than we realize. i think, by the way, we know 1% or 2% of all the information and evidence that the southern district and robert mueller have right now so it's hard to imagine what more is coming. but there's a lot. yes, in the michael cohen case we did see some tension in that robert mueller's office wrote a quite favorable letter supporting michael cohen's cooperation with them saying that he has been fully forthright and truthful and provided a lot of useful information. the southern district said michael cohen would not cooperate with them on some of their investigations, and as a result of that he only got a modest sentence reduction from what he otherwise would get. so the two offices do things a little bit differently in terms of cooperating witnesses. it ends up getting into little inside baseball. to the extent there's tension that's where it may lie but they clearly had have seemed to work it out and they are collaborating i think more

gate. i mean he was murdered, as soon as he was making a speech. so the right wing repression that was coming, they made it very clear that the politics of robert kennedy, politics of social justice, anti-war, were being repudiated, and that kind of set the tone for a very, very radical uprising across the country on many levels. >> we set the tone for this discussion, with that news report of the death of martin luther king jr., 50 years ago, this we're, describe your memory of learning about the death of martin luther king jr. >> what i remember, i was in oakland at the time. i mean i was living in california at the time. the black panther party headquarters were in oakland. and what i remember was how stunned and angry black people around the country were. washington, d.c. was set on fire. there was tons of uprisings. riots. protests. the country seemed to be in a state of total chaos. and what was so intriguing is that clearly, there was an instruction to the police in these cities to stand down because police were not confronting these riots and these uprisings, so you saw a huge explosion of anger and frustration and violence in the wake of the a
