with me now is robert gibbs, fortunatelier press secretary for the president obama administration. in the leadup to the virginia election, right, we talked a lot about the key virginia suburbs that biden managed to clinch in 2020 and mcauliffe had to hang on to those and obviously he wasn't able to do that. you take a look at the numbers in virginia. it is not looking good coming the democrats. if we look at the 2008 presidential race, republicans won only four counties with 70% or more of the vote. compare that to the 2021 gubernatorial race. youngkin won 45 counties with more than 75% of the vote. 15 won with more than 80% of the vote. this is presidential to gubernatorial and a national versus a local election but the numbers aren't great for democrats right now, robert. >> no. the trend on those is not great. i'll say many of those are going to be smaller counties. but i think what democrats have to do as they approach rural voters is not dissimilarly to republicans trying to pick off voters. we have to be present. this is a 20-year problem for democrats. isn't just something t

with us is a senior political editor mark murray and former press secretary robert gibbs.ark. what does it tell us about the president and the heads winds for democrats, especially terry mcauliffe. to me the biggest sign about the poll is it shows the democrats aren't necessarily 2010 territory. they're in 2014 territory. when we end up looking at our poll, the numbers for joe biden's approval rating, the right track wrong track numbers look more like 2014 than they said 2010. and either situation would be rough for democrats right now. but when we look ahead to virginia, what's telling, remember, mark warner barely won reelection in in 2019. one of the reasons why it was such the terrible political environment for democrats and we're seeing that again for democrats. just nine months into biden's presidency. >> yeah. and mark warner was a former governor also and hugely popular. what's the new poll and other signals tell you about what's happening with the president and with these off-year elections? >> well, i think mark is very right. i mean, it's a tough poll for democr

vitali on capitol hill and also with us, jake sherman, former democratic senator heidi heitkamp and robert gibbsobama administration. ally, government funds and raising the debt ceiling are more surgent. so what could we expect today. >> this is once again a situation where there are things that lawmakers can change and the things that they can't. and in terms of the deadlines that they're dealing with, the things that they could change are the build back better agenda. yes, senator chuck schumer wants to see this passed before christmas. political there might be a cost to not getting that done. but if they push past that deadline, it is sort of no harm no foul. they could finish that up when they finish that up. on the other two fronts, the debt ceiling and government funding, those are deadlines that cannot be moved. you see it there on the your screen. on friday at midnight the government shuts down on then in mid-december, the debt ceiling and they could act on that tomorrow making that move and trying to avert a government shutdown. and on the debt ceiling piece of this, the thing that is d
