robert handa one of the first reporters at the scene live. robert joins us. what have you learned in the last hour? >> reporter: it has been a hectic scene for the afternoon and into the evening but things have calmed down quite a bit. you can see the crime scene here at jackson avenue near mckee road is active. some neighbors are being allowed to leave. they were basically stuck inside when a swarm came in and cordoned off the neighborhood. they had responded to a report of a man with a gun. they said they heard of a man with a rifle who was confronted by police. >> it's unfortunate somebody was shot. if you walk around the streets with a gun, that's something that you have to deal with. >> he told him to drop it and he didn't drop his gun. so they had to shoot him. for their protection and everybody else on the street. >> reporter: and, again, you can see investigators are still here around the scene where it took place at jackson avenue and mckee road. at this point police will only say that the mail suspect was taken to a hospital but died shortly afterwa

live in san jose, robert handa, nbc bay area news. >> thank you, robert.progress from the fire lines in sonoma county. tonight the kincade fire is nearly 70% contained. but we should add, about 350 homes and buildings have been destroyed. nbc bay area's alley wolf is in healdsburg for us after speaking to a woman whose family lost multiple homes. >> reporter: the woman we spoke to is staying in a hotel and still hasn't been able to see her property. she has seen pictures and she knows everything has been destroyed. a glimpse into what has been destroyed. this shows her ranch in healdsburg before the massive wildfire. >> that's the refrigerator or the oven. >> compared to what it looks like now. >> burned to the ground, like everything. >> the home she lives in with mer daughters, ages 10 and 18, burned to the ground along with her parents' home on the same property. >> that's my sister's bed. >> she's only seen pictures of the destruction. she can't go back yet because some hotspots are still smoldering along the roads. we saw helicopters dropping water on

robert handa joins us with new and really weird information you've uncovered about this gentleman. >> reporter: yes. there is a lot of mystery surrounding the man being held here at the santa clara county main jail and today his roommate is adding interesting details. the man who lived with the possible bomb suspect is still upset today about the broken windows and damage done to his apartment by police after san jose police forcibly arrested his roommate and then searched and found what were described as several improvised to a pipe bomb found earlier in the week at nearby oak grove high school. john says the equipment seized was part of a homemade still used to make moon shine liquor, not bombs. >> they're making him out to be ted kahzin ski. he's not that. they're making him out to be the unabomber. no. >> reporter: at this point he has not been named a suspect in the oak grove incident. he was arrested on possession of controlled substance for sale. our records show he has a lengthny criminal record which included roared through the the complex at all hours and flew a scared of hi

robert handa is live in cupertino. robert. >> reporter: we're here at an apartment complex on wolf road where several of the alleged burglars were caught. according to the sheriff's department there were two groups working this area, maybe together, definitely working fast. these are crime scene images taken sunday by sheriff investigators including a stolen car used in a series of break ins as well as a suspect vehicle used in another string of car burglaries around steven's creek boulevard. three adults and three minors were arrested. investigators are trying to see if there's a connection to the two groups that hit a tote ofl 14 vehicles around the same area before getting caught. >> it's not uncommon for groups to cooperate with each other to burglarize vehicles. >> reporter: in one case, suspects were seen by security officers while the others were spotted at a business parking lot. vega acknowledged the witnesses were an unfortunate break because the thieves smash windows. stolen credit cards, ids, phones, checkbo
