robert ray in the middle of that, hours away from being just that. we could be looking at, what do you think? >> reporter: right now maximum winds of 85 miles an hour. it has turned to the southwest of the fort myers area. it's considered a category one storm but eventually we anticipate idalia will undergo what we call rapid intensification. that means we will see winds increase by 35 miles an hour in the next 24 hours. once this make landfall somewhere in the big bend this will likely have at least winds of one hundred 11 miles per hour. mph. we see some tornado warnings popping up here 17 miles from marco island, this will be going on until 12:15. we will see severe weather across the sunshine state from gainesville to the tampa area today. once the storm gets done with florida it will continue into georgia and south carolina and even north carolina. the atlanta metro area will likely get rain out of this. college, raleigh, north carolina, savannah will see some significant rain out of this, from 1 to 5 inches of rain across the florida panhandle.

robert ray, are there mandatory evacuations happening right now? >> yeah, good afternoon, sandra.nty. officials met this morning and they have not issued mandatory evacuations to the surprise of many. and you see like this bridge here that goes over this causeway, that's where people will begin to leave if they decide to leave voluntarily, but nothing mandatory. here is the thing, sandra, and john. look at this. the gulf of mexico here, and these waters are sitting at close to 90° in a temperature. and what that means for the strengthening and the rapid intensification of this tropical system that's headed up, expected to be a category 3, is that it will get a lot of juice really quickly. what it means to rapid intensify is the warm waters, the energy, humidity level through the roof and not a lot of wind to knock it down, knock the hurricane, so counterclockwise come in here. it's expected to be about 80 miles off of the gulf of mexico. take a look out there as it makes its way to the big bend of florida, that curve that goes into the panhandle. but sandra and john, we know this

fox weather's robert ray joins us from hawaii on the island of maui. bert. >> harris, good morning. just after 5:00 a.m. here in maui as serious as it gets here in this neighborhood. if you look at a map of maui, 3,000 elevation up the hill. 1 of 3 fires that burned, 65% containment on this one. just take a look in the dark of night at the burned-out vehicles and someone's home unfortunately scorched and the smell of smoke still here in this area this morning. particles we can see in the lights here that are illuminating here from the smoke. you take a look at some of the daylight video from this area and you see the destruction of this neighborhood. up to 20 homes that were ravaged by the flames last week. thankfully no reported fatalities on this particular fire. unfortunately as you just said, 99 people, potentially just the beginning, have lost their lives down on the west side of maui in the historic town and they are still rummaging through all of the ashes looking for human remains. we spoke to one woman up here about how she and her family were

robert ray is live in clearwater, florida with the latest there. robert? >> yeah, trace.learwater beach, mandatory evacuations in place right now. take a look out there at the gulf of mexico. there are still people trying to get their last moments of paradise here. there's surfers there. in the distance, what you might see are the outer bands. we just got the first squalls that came in. this storm is well south of off, off of naples and fort myers area. this will make its way up here, expected to be a category three storm as it will make landfall on the big bend sometimes very early tomorrow morning. this is going to get rocking soon. it will be a hostile environment here on this beach. it's mandatory evacs. local officials say get out of the flood zones. many people are moving to an area to get away from the storm surge. where i'm standing right now could be up to seven feet of storm surge pushing in from the gulf of mexico over walls like this, in to parking lots and on to roads. it will get dangerous overnight very soon, this will be a hostile environment in the coming
