harvey company, they hired large numbers of women to staff their restaurants and cafes across the rocky mountain west. they became the largest employers of women. and for a time, they were the large largest employer in the united states. so this is a company who really had a big impact on america in 1890s, 1910, 1920, that period of time. one of the more interesting things in our collection is this rather old and battered scrapbook from harvey girl. it was given to ellen nail, president of fred harvey company at the grand canyon after amtrak took it over. and one of the things we don't know is who the harvey girl was. that's an interesting thing about this scrapbook. we could probably work on figuring out who she is based on the material inside of the scrapbook. but the scrapbook documents a rather long career of at least 25 years with the fred harvey company. but the scrapbook itself is kind of a very positive and glowing look at what employment must have been like, at least for this woman with this company. the company also, i think, through the growth managed to position itself to become the
