that's what brings this large group to rome. it is a nice backdrop, overlooking the eternal city, we're atop the terrace of the hotel where the delegation will be staying. the delegation just arrived. they landed at the airport, which is about 35 miles from here about two hours ago and they just arrived at the hotel. they have a packed agenda. there are a lot of receptions tours of historic sites and that sort of thing but there are serious meetings taking place this week as well. meetings to do with final details of the world meeting of families but also major meetings about security. one thing that these leaders from philadelphia will do is meet with the head of security for vatican city. we also found out that the philadelphia contingent reached out to this last city to host the world meeting of families milan. milan and philadelphia are similar in size population 1.3, 1.5 respectively. organizers expect pope francis's mass in philly to draw more spectators. there were no problems in milan which she attributes to the italian

nbc 10 is live in rome where city leaders are about to announce the performers who will welcome pope francis to the city of brotherly love. good morning, this is nbc 10 news today. i'm rosemary connors. a first alert is in effect this morning because of the heat and threat of severe storms. meteorologist bill henley has the details in the first alert forecast. bill? >> temperatures in the 70s right now, close to where they were yesterday. but this afternoon is going to be hotter and more humid and that will likely lead to severe weather this afternoon. a line of storms we're watching this morning just to the north and west. the heat will be in the 90s this afternoon and near record territory. then the severe storms potentially damaging winds, even a threat of tornadoes later today. radar shows nothing in the area just yet but look to the northwest. you can see the line of showers moving towards northwestern pennsylvania at this hour. the temperatures are in the 70s to start with. 78 degrees in northeast philadelphia and 75 in wilmington. the temperatures will be climbing into the 80s

rome's station is one of the country's main rail terminals. is where thousands of illegal migrant children arrive, desperate to make money however they can. we've been directed here by local contacts who tell us the boys work the corners on the streets outside. as we drive past as if on cue we see a group of egyptian kids approached by an italian man. furtds down the street other kids seem to be on the lookout. we watch as money and something else is exchanged. it's broad daylight and we are right in the center of rome and groups of boys were clustered together. we saw them, in a known pickup location. as soon as they saw the camera, they disappeared. one of the boys later agrees to talk to us. he is one of the thousands of egyptian children that have disappeared out of the italian care system. for his safety we disguised his identity and his voice. he calls the sex trafficking and the drug selling he is involved with is the illegal stuff. >> the illegal stuff is the easiest. a friend will be working in these kind of things will say come i'll

nbc 10's chris cato reports from rome. >> reporter: of course rome is an international destination but philly wants to prove that it's a goebel superstar, too. and today they get a big chance to do that. the u.s. embassy and the leaders from philadelphia that are here they are hosting a luncheon or international media. it's designed to show the world what philadelphia has to offer to market to tourists all over the globe from the liberty bell to love park all the history, cheesesteaks rocky, everyone knows philadelphia is one of a kind. they want to make sure everyone knows that. we talked to tourists in st. peter's square. they may not have visited philly but they do know a thing or two. >> what do you know about philly? >> rocky. >> right. everyone knows the steps. >> that's about it. >> philadelphia museum of art. those are the steps he runs up. >> i heard about the movie called "philadelphia." >> reporter: yes, thank, tom hanks. not too bad, right? we learned other things about what people think they know about philadelphia. we'll share that with you later today. we'll be following

>> reporter: well, good evening from rome, chris. it is a lovely night here, it is just after midnight here in rome. we are operating six hours ahead of you guys back home in philadelphia so very quiet out here. we are outside st. peters square and vatican where it is really peaceful. i must say quite beautiful tonight. we did land with the delegation early this morning here in rome. so we have had a full day. i did get the opportunity, as some of the delegation was resting up adjusting to the time change we have talk with the mayor and also talk with the executive director of the world meeting of families about how important the next few days are the sun and flooded square on this hot june day. few miles away philadelphia delegation prepared for five days of action. philadelphia's mayor michael nutter told me this trip is about meeting vatican counterparts face-to-face as his city prepares to host the world meeting of families and pope francis. >> having to plan out 48, 50 some hours from the time his holiness land on the ground and

jessica is on assignment in rome. we will see her in just a moment. but first severe thunderstorm watch which is now in effect. lets get the latest from kathy with her eye on the storms now and storm an three kathy. >> these storms have pick up in momentum moving east at 35 miles an hour and at that speed, chris they should be in philadelphia by about 6:00 p.m. you can see the line extending from reading all the way down toward maryland and if we zoom in you will see all of the lightening associated with these storms moving through reading, berks county, lancaster, long the turnpike earlier sagging south and as we count all of these lightening strikes, we are talking about close to 500 strikes and this continues once again to have move toward the east. at this speed we're talking about a severe cell right here in berks county moving east at 35 miles an hour. we have a severe thunderstorm warning in effect for montgomery county because of that cell, that severe cell will be in pottstown by 5:01. lower providence by 5:38 and norristown by 5:48. severe t

nbc 10's chris cato joins us again live from rome. chris, organizers have been planning the world meeting for almost three years now. what more could be left to do? >> it's a fair question. this is evolveing, changes bit week. they land at the airport about 30 miles from here about an hour and a half ago. they're currently en route to the hotel, the villa bergasa. the delegation will arrive here in 30 minutes. they have four days of meetings ahead of them. they'll get hard numbers on how many people have registered and which countries are participating. more so than that they'll have a big security planning session, all about keeping the pope safe. we found out that philadelphia leaders took a few pointers from the last city to host the meeting of families, milan. organizers expect pope francis's mass in philly to join 500,000 more pilgrims than pope benedict. there were no security problems during the pope's visit which she attributed to the fact that italian police are accustomed to the crowds that come with the pope. >> here in ita

"eyewitness news" anchor jessica dean is traveling with that delegation. >> reporter: good morning, guys, from here in rome we have just wrapped up covering the mayor mayor michael nutter speaking with the mayor here in rome. they were there to talk about security for pope francis just what it is like to have him going through the city and the mayor of rome, he used to live in philadelphia he knows a lot about the city. the two have formed quite a one. they were able to talk about that with other members of the delegation, representatives from the city. >> he really demands and requires a level of accessibility that from a security standpoint would make anyone nervous. at the same time we know that we can protect him. so again i have mentioned on many occasions the challenge of security and accessibility and of those concepts, collide with each oth

when i left my village in italy to go to rome and to get my passport, i needed seven days in rome for the consulate to notify washington i needed my passport and i was told i had to wait seven days. so how you spend seven days in rome? the first thing i did was to go to the vatican and the museum of the vatican. i saw a piece of sculpture -- if you ever go to the vatican, go see that museum. there is a sculpture of just the breast. no heads, norms, no legs. -- no arms, no legs. he did the beautiful woman by the greek -- what was it called? >> venus? tony: yes, venus. the sculptor was the same sculptor who did venus. this was in the vatican museum. i have seven days to wait for my passport in rome. the first thing was to go to the museum. and i see this, and i wanted to become a sculptor. so, i go to knew her shell, i go to school, and one day, the teacher -- bertram lewis -- i will never forget this name. because he created my world. i tell him that i wanted to become a sculptor, and i did some sculpture -- very, very good. i still have some. i sculpted washington. but mr. lewis said,

hello and good evening from rome. we are standing right now live on the same spanish steps one of the most legendary urban landmarks anywhere in the world. it spans 135 steps all the way from the top all the way to the bottom. they're incredibly steep steps and frankly it's kind of an apt metaphor for the planning process for waiting for pope francis' arrival in philadelphia. so with that in mind the planners arrived back here in rome today with the hopes of making sure the event not only goes off without a hitch but that it's also memorable and meaningful. those are two words that really resonate with mayor michael nutter. when you look at your role here and you think when the history books are written this iconic figure at this turning point for the church and your name is right there next to it talk about the pressure and the pride that comes with that. >> being involved with any of them that has pope francis being a part of it there's an enormous amount of pride at a personal and professional level but it is of co
