ron and antoine are on the pta. so, we invite them to every good event and a lot of times we see them in bad situations also. we always invite them. we opened our doors to them and that was important and i think if you are looking for a ron and antoine the best thing to do is probably if you don't know your officers on the street and their personalities to call our captain and ask him or her if they know of someone you can work with. that's really important. and a lot of the stuff we do we also they wrote a grant for mayor's office of community justice. we actually, i worked with them we got a grant to educate the community of what we need to do to help them in their work. there are things you can do with the mrapolice officers if you st from scratch and think creatively. the next thing is with the da. we have a strong partnership with the da and the liaison with the da. there is a da liaison in every station. you need to get to know that community liaison from the da's office. they are an attorney at the da's offic

ron and i go to almost all of them. the ones we can make i think we rarely miss one that was big enough they asked us to come to. and during those activities we play with the kids. football, basketball whatever you name it we do. one example i will give, too, they had a black and white ball a couple of fridays ago and that night and in the fillmore district. you had kids from as young as 34 up to adults in their 80's. and everyone stayed until it was over like 11 o'clock. it was just a good atmosphere for us to see and look at and see how different people in the community can come together and have a good time without problems. and that's another way we give support. another example. we get kids we know all the time we see everyday. the kid we know say, they are cool that's ron and antoine come over here. for me personally, it's rewarding for me because by ron was saying on tv you see a lot of negative perceptions about the police. just to have kids have a different perspective that they are living everyday like we are

moving on to ron-ron, how are substance use disorders and behavioral health issues portrayed in the media? i think the addiction is portrayed accurately. i don't think the recovery of addiction is portrayed accurately. i think it's always the addiction ready for the other shoe to drop and show all the worst things about addiction and not the assets of recovery. and, of course, doug, we're dealing with so many types of media here. there's television, there is radio, there are movies, which one do you think really is one of the more larger culprits of misrepresenting? i think that while there is so much talk about social media and social networking in using the internet, television is still the number one used medium. the number of hours of tv time is still the single greatest use of any medium as reported by the pew studies that have been done in recent years. so clearly tv has a disproportionate influence on our perceptions and attitudes about recovery. are you including cable in there as well? absolutely, yes. i mean the cable penetration in this country has reached very high percentages

this is a summer conversation with reverend ron swisher. i get to turn the tables and welcome him as a guest. >> yeah, we do this usually in the summer. there have been some big news in your life professionally, a church change. tell us about it. >> this stud owe is new, and i am in a new community. i was at tate memorial. it was my home church. my mother has been a member there 67 years. i have associated other places. easter hill richmond, superintendent sacramento and i started off in east oakland where i met you. >> hillside. >> yeah, hillside. so going to my home church after 25 years of ministry and that was new and i was well received even though some times you are not welcome back at your home. i was there for 12 years then three weeks ago the bishop called and said we would like to see you move on to another church . that was new for me but i said let's go with it and it was st. marks united methodist in orinda, 25 minutes away, through the tunnel, right before you get to go to walnut creek and other places, lafayette and so forth.

ron, what would you say about that? i think the music industry plays a large role in how they can portray addiction and recovery. i listen to some of the music my kids listen to, you know, rap music. some of it's great; i like some of it, but a lot of it the words are horrible. it portrays drug use and sexual abuse. but then, on the other hand, i have great songs that i listen to about recovery, success stories in recovery. aerosmith's amazing; richie supa who wrote amazing also wrote in the rooms who won the prism award in 2009, which is fantastic. there are so many musicians in recovery today. well, nikki sixx; nikki sixx did a whole album, right, mark? absolutely. right. and richie supa is putting out an album now with dozens of recovering musicians from different groups we've all heard of since the 70s and they're producing it now and they're all written about recovery and all the success stories that go with it. so essentially, we've got the internet. and in the internet, we didn't even begin to touch on the whole
