ron paul's been running on this military support recently.came after him and rick santorum had that spar about iran at a previous debate. he's continued to pound home he's got more donations from active duty military veterans than any other candidate. he is pointing to entitlements he will defend. the reason he can defend the domestic entitlements is by bringing the troops home and save trillions. >> so what is the reaction in the audience to it? this is a guy that would argue four years ago, you wouldn't hear him putting caveats on some of his positions. if he didn't like a program, he would say i don't like this program. the implication being he'd get rid of it. now he's saying i don't like but i'm not getting rid of it. reaction in the crowd? >> i think reality is setting in. four years ago we weren't at 9% unemployment. today those in the crowd have friends and family members out of jobs. so they're relying on these entitlements. so i think the softer stance is resonating with the audience. i've asked them ron paul's message is different.

i do think that ron paul is showing that ron paul can be a bit more of a politician than perhaps we think, and he is doing the right thing there, but it was clearly -- the fireworks were flying between the two of them at the debate, and i expect we'll see more of that next week in the next debate. >> yeah. do you have a winner in your mind from this debate? >> i think you have to say that rick perry and mitt romney were kind of tied. they both did what they needed to do. mitt romney had a strong performance. he showed that he can take a purchg and throw a punch. he did not have any mistakes. rick perry did have some mistakes, but the expectations were so much lower for him. he had never debated nationally. you know, he did show that he is going to meet hits on him back punch for punch. i would argue that maybe fighting with ron paul as heavily as he did only elevates ron paul, but regardless, i think that rick perry did overall pretty well. >> did we get a sense from the polls going into the debate that had rick perry, you know, as the frontrunner -- do we think this race has tightened up

went all out about american exceptionalism or our right to bomb everyone at last night's debate but ron paul at least opened the door for that real conversation what happened while he was brushed off treated like some weird for in jena and forgotten about and all of the media coverage today going over last night's debate that wasn't a soundbite that was played over and over and over again when it should have been because it's the mainstream media that's just as guilty of shielding its eyes to that reality because they serve a higher power as they don't want you to think for yourself either so they serve. and i miss but if we keep doing that if we don't talk about it confronts us then we're going to lose. all right so let's talk more about last night's c.n.n. tea party debate with eight of the g.o.p. presidential candidates now mind you there was still no gary johnson over at carter and nobody romer all of whom we've interviewed on this show all of whom continue to be excluded from all those major bates we have to ask if there is anything particularly tea party about this one i'm not sur

we're joined by ron insana, senior analyst at cnbc. ron, let me start with you. we know we're expecting nothing but a lukewarm report tomorrow. let's talk about next week. will the markets believe that what the president proposes is something that can work? >> well, chuck, i think they doubt anything substantive can be passed given the current state of affairs between the white house and the congressional republicans. i think the big surprise would be if there were an executive order, as was suggested by the "new york times" last week that would allow for some sort of refinancing of existing mortgages, regardless of whether people are under water or in the money on their mortgages, and refinance them at 4% across the board. that would be a much bigger jolt, positive jolt, to the economy than i think some of the things we've seen in the paper that might be proposed by the white house, roads and bridge construction and things like that. we either need something really, really big on the jobs front or we need a big refinancing of existing mortgages to get some real

>> there are, i really agree with ron.lected. once i'm reelected then i can do all of these other things but the voters, a couple of other lessons. one is the voters like to see some accomplishment, achievement. two the base of your party when it decides it has nowhere else to go will probably return to you, which is what happened to bill clinton and i also think that he can take a look at clinton's success in portraying the opposition as too radical, that worked for him, and i think we see barack obama getting there and as we get closer to the election, i believe we will hear the word extremist used again and again and again. >> yes. one very big difference, clinton was in a stronger political position as '96 went on largely because the economy was recovering and that's why trent lott in particular made a decision on health care and minimum wage and they did it because they felt they needed to show accomplishments to maintain the senate majority. republicans now i think feel that obama is in a weakened position, there wil
