let's go to ron allen. he's in seoul, south korea with the latest. what do we know about these tests and the possibly nuclear tests that happened in north korea? >> well, we're still waiting for a detailed and accurate and verifiable analysis of what was detonated. the measurements of it by the usgs in the states put the blast at a scale reading of about 6.3,s which is massive. then there was a second explosion of some sort at about a 4, which appeared to be in the same location. the bottom line is this was a massive event, many times larger than the last confirmed atomic test by the north koreans about a year or so ago. so they have clearly moved their program forward. we know that they have been advancing their missile technology very rapidly during the last couple years and even during the last few months. we know they fired a long range missile over japan for the first time about a week or so ago. one of the steps in what has been an escalating cascading back and forth between united states, north korea, south korea, verbally and militaritily, in

let's now go to nbc's ron allen in seoul, south korea. , how have south korean officials reacted to these reports? >> reporter: well, we just saw a statement from the south korean president saying, in part, and i quote, i will not let the north korean provocation go unpunished. very tough language, along for calls with tougher sanctions, diplomacy and as you mentioned, the president for the first time has indicated he's going to seek to see if there's more u.s. military that can be brought to this country, perhaps based in this country as a deterrent to north korea. there's a huge u.s. military presence here and the south korean president has been adamant about trying to find a diplomatic solution to this problem, to talking with the north koreans, to reconciliation. and i'm sure that's still the first priority. but the reaction to this has been very strong because this has been a monumental event. there's been a steady escalation, a steadying ratcheting up of tension, a steady movement forward by the north koreans in terms of the sophisti

. >> let's start with ron allen who is in south korea and halle jackson. south korea on edge, how are they reacting to this latest nuclear test. ? >> there is a lot of anger, frustration, and frustration in the talk about war that we are hearing today. here is south korea, the leader has been pushing for negotiations and for reconciliation and he is getting nowhere. in recent days we have seen more military posture. we have seen the training exercises that really send a message that they're getting more and more serious, they don't want to see a military confrontation. but they have been doing this because they feel they're just getting nowhere. they're also looking to the u.n. security council hoping for tougher sanctions to be imposed and enforced. will they enforce any other sanctions that the security council comes up with. there are a lot of people in south korea that are concerned about the conflicting messages to the north and the world. the cryptic messages. there are two unpredictable and impulsive leaders, president trump and kim in north korea,

joining us now live from seoul, south korea, nbc news correspondent ron allen. u.s.als in the region are justifying yesterday's military exercises with south korea's show of force against north korea. give us your sense in terms of how pyongyang spoke out on the matter. >> good morning. well, predictably, they are responding with outrage, anger. calling the u.s. military exercise a wild military act. u.s. military commanders say the flyover was completely justified. it was a huge perhaps unprecedented military operation. with some of america's most sophisticated war planes flying along with fighter jets from japan and south korea. a huge simulated bombing exercise. that's loud and clear. u.s. officials say that some of the exercise was purposely flown very close to the north korean border so the rebelling i'm could see exactly what was happening. now, china and russia have condemned it all. they said that war is not the answer. they have called for negotiations. finally today in japan there was a massive air preparedness civil defense drill that happened in the north

and ron allen is in seoul this morning. ron, how is the rest of the world responding to the latest provocation from north korea? >> well there has been condemnation as you might expect from around the world. there is as you pointed out, the u.n. security council set to hold yet another, another emergency meeting later in new york to deal with the crisis. sanctions were just passed. couple days ago. what was said to be the toughes the second time that was said. so, yes, the options seem to be running out. here in south korea, the, the military responded immediately to the north korean ballistic missile test. south koreans fired their missile. live fire exercise. the fact of the matter they have been conducting deterrent, shows of force, about every day however. since the last missile launch bay north koreans. since that massive nuclear test. so there is that. we expect that when the security council meets again they will be talk of more sanctions. the russians, chinese made it clear they're only going to go so far. rejected t

nbc's ron allen has been on the ground there in south korea for us covering this story. and ron, we understand there's going to be some sort of announcement from north korea on what has happened so far. what do we expect to be said from what we know? >> well, we expect it to be a pretty triumphant statement by the north koreans for propaganda value. this is what they want. they want the world's attention on them. they want to trumpet what they've done and what they've accomplished. it's left to be seen yet what part of their claims are true or not or exaggerated. but clearly it seems that they have done something very significant. there are those reports, those confirmations by the japanese, are the only ones i've seen so far where they say that they believe this was, in fact, a nuclear test. there are the reports from the usgs of two seismic events. the first one being larger, the second one being what was possibly a result of the first. some sort of structural collapse of some structure, perhaps. but again, something massive apparently happened there in north korea this
