lester. >> all right, ron allen starting us off here in new york. thank you. >>> there's breaking news involving the gilgo beach killings on long island. an eighth victim has been identified decades after her remains were found, but no link at this point to the suspect in three of the murders. here's stephanie gosk. >> reporter: even though accused killer rex heuermann is sitting in jail awaiting trial, there are still many unanswered questions in the gilgo beach murders case. at least 11 bodies were discovered on long island over a decade ago, and heuermann is accused of killing three of the women. today, a breakthrough. >> we are here to announce as part of the gilgo task force re-examine of all the evidence in the case we were able to identify fire island jane doe as karen vergata. >> reporter: karen vergata was 34 years old, working a escort. her remains discovered in 1996 on firland f coast of lon isla ce couldn't tify her. nearlyyears later vergatskull was found here in a wildlife sanctuary miles from the other remains. the d.a. did not link v

let's bring in nbc news correspondent ron allen, who has been monitoring all of this for us and followinge. as well as msnbc legal analyst danny cevallos. let's start with ron. talk about the significance of this development when it comes to the larger case, we have been following very closely there is a suspect tied to four deaths, four victims found on gilgo beach. >> right. and all told there are as many as 11 sets of remains in the general area of gilgo beach, some the gilgo beach four, four women were close together. the others were found some distance away. but over the years this has all been seen as one unsolved huge awful mystery. perhaps connected to one serial killer. this woman was known as also jane doe number seven, i believe. as you reported, she went missing as far back as 1996. the authorities said using advanced dna analysis, which has progressed during the years, they're now able to identify this woman. she lived in manhattan. she was an escort. many of the women who were found dead have been described as escorts or sex workers. they say there is no suspect in this part

i want to bring in nbc's ron allen from outside courthouse in riverhead, new york.d msnbc legal analyst danny cevallos. ron, i don't think we know a lot about what is going to happen during this court appearance. but what do we know? >> it is being described as a conference, a hearing. he's been formally charged with six counts of first and second degree murder. he's already pleaded not guilty. and he's already been denied bail. so, the question is whether the defense may raise the bail issue again. we expect it to be some discussion of the evidentiary process, the discovery process, the timing of that, the calendar going ahead. there may be some discussion of the conditions of his confinement at the correctional facility here in suffolk county. those are the kinds of issues that we expect to happen in just a few minutes or so. very brief hearing, but one of the few times, the second time he will appear in public and people here in this community who are shocked and horrified by what has happened will get a chance to see this individual. there are no cameras in cour

ron allen following that for us. so how does this play into the prosecution of the suspect connected to these murders or does it at all? >> there's no connection between the identify of the woman found today, the woman's remains found and the suspect in the case rex heuermann. he is charged with the murders of three women. this is a case, the woman identified as karen bergada that dates back to 1996, her remains found with the remains of the others who are part of this gilgo beach murder case. there are in total 11 sets of remains found and so far, there are only three that have not been identified. so again, they were able to match the dna of the set of remains with a family member. here's how the d.a. describes how they were able to identify this woman. >> in september of 2022 the fbi was able to -- was able via a genetic genealogy review to identify miss bergada as fire island jane doe. in october of 2022, using a swab from a relative of karen, we were able to definitively identify her. >> so they've been using th

let's bring in nbc news correspondent ron allen outside court in riverhead, new york. jordan. what can we expect to come out of this hearing? >> reporter: as you said, the focus is going to be on bail and on evidence, discovery. but for many people, this will be the first time that they get a good look at this suspect, who lived in this community for a very long time, and was known as an architect who kind of kept to himself and commuted back and forth to midtown manhattan like so many other people do out here in long island. he's charged with three counts of murder, six counts of murder, three first degree, three second degree and he's a suspect in a fourth murder. and the question is whether in fact as they go through this evidence prosecutors might read more about what they have that ties him to any of these cases. there is a possibility that his attorney will argue for bail, for his release. at the moment he's being held without if he if he requests bail, we expect prosecutors to push back very hard because he is a suspect in at least a fourth murder and perhaps ot

it's being used as an arrival center for people seeking asylum in the united states nbc's ron allen isht there for us hey, ron, good morning >> reporter: good morning, hoda. this is a huge landmark hotel that had been closed for several years, until a few months ago, when the city reopened it. homeless shelters around the city have reached capacity, the city was struggling to find housing for thousands of migrants arriving every day. now this has become the arrival center for hundreds. hundreds line the streets every day, many sleeping on the streets overnight, hoping for a chance to apply for housing that will get them off the streets. as communities nationwide are affected by the crisis at the border, in new york, amid the pricey stores and midtown office crowds, these men who say they came here from west africa hope they finally reach the front of the line to apply for shelter. >> i have seven days here. >> seven days you've been sleeping on the street here? >> yeah. >> reporter: the crisis deepening this week with new york mayor's eric adams saying -- >> there is no more room. >> r

ron allen joins us from outside the courthouse in river head, new york. what are we learning, ron? saw him in the courtroom for five to seven minutes. he was dressed in a dark gray, black jacket, tan pants and he was wearing handcuffs. he stood through the entire proceeding. he towers over everyone and he looked at the prosecution as the prosecution outlined some evidence against him. most of this hearing was about this massive amount of evidence the prosecution says it has and how it's going to hand it over to the defense. they describe 2500 pages of documents and photographs. hundreds of hours of security footage. here's the d.a. talking about the hearing afterwards. >> we need to continue to comply with the discovery requirements. we're working with the court, with defense counsel. that discovery's going to be going out on a rolling basis. as you know was indicated in court, it's a tremendous amount of material. so we're going to continue to provide that. obviously, you know, the defense is going to need time to digest all of that which we're giving. >> he said it's 13 years of

let's bring in ron allen who joins us outside the courthouse in riverhead, new york, what's happening right now? >> reporter: well the hearing just ended. heuermann, some still photographs that show him in a khaki pants, blue shirt. looked over at the prosecution as the prosecution was talking about the massive amount of evidence they say they have in this case. that's what this was mostly about, called discovery and how the prosecution is going to get this information to the defense in the coming weeks and months. the next hearing date was set for late september, the 27th of september, but a lot of the discussion as we understand it between the judge and the attorneys not in court but on side bars and forth was about the logistics to get this information to the defense, 2500 pages of photos, documents, surveillance video, photographs from the crime scene, 13 years worth of investigative material is how the d.a. described it afterwards. they insist their case is extremely strong. so that's kind of where we are now. very brief appearance by the defendant. by the suspect. the next date

ron allen has more. what more are we learning about karen? >> reporter: she was 34 years old.he disappeared back in 1996. and while one set of remains were found on fire island, another set were found in 2010, near gilgo beach, and that's what connects her to this ongoing case. authorities have explained why there are two sets of remains, but she also was an escort, like we know that four of the women who have been identified as also victims there, at gilgo beach as well and those similarities to the case. and authorities didn't answer any of the questions about whether there is a suspect, or any more details, and the main focus today, was to identify this individual, and there were a total of at least, up to 11 sets of remains found at gilgo beach and seven have been identified and the suspect, rex heuermann has only been charged in connection with three murders. he is the prime suspect in a fourth murder of a fourth woman, and he of course has pleaded not guilty, and he is being held without bail. >> in august of 2022 -- >> ron, before we let you go, what can you tell us abo
