wisconsin senator ron johnson writes a letter to james comey insisting the bureau release the detailsf their investigation into secretary clinton's e-mails. senator johnson is on the record tonight from washington, d.c. good evening, sir. good to have you with us. >> how are you doing? >> i'm doing well. your committee, homeland security and governmental affairs considers this to not be a closed case. why? >> the lettier wrote to director comey asked three basic questions. very legitimate question to ask, how much did secretary clinton's extremely careless behavior cost the american public. it's not just the fbi. there are other agencies, the state department, probably intel, of this country, spent an awful lot of money investigating her careless -- her extremely careless behavior. otherwise, what is the difference between extremely careless behavior and gross negligence. i'm not an attorney, not a prosecutor myself, but i have talked to attorneys and prosecutors watching his press conference. and as he was building the case, they start going, man, he's going to recommend indictment.

ron johnson came to the convention, took time away from his campaign yesterday, made an outstanding speechchuck is in really good shape. you know, pennsylvania is a state that i think will be competitive in -- at the top of the ticket. but pat tumi is strong there. he's also leading in the polls, and i think he will continue to lead. they're going to throw a ton of money at us there. new hampshire looks very, very good. and the reason is that she's just an outstanding, excellent accomplishment-driven member of the united states senate. and i think that the type of person that people in new hampshire want to keep on the job. liz: we were earlier showing some pictures of rob portman of ohio. rob portman, marco rubio, and they've all kept their distance from the rnc. they're spending a lot of time campaigning in their states. look, i guess the question is, is this perceived at all as keeping their distance from donald trump so that they can win those states from perhaps centerrist voters who don't really attach themselves to what appears to be a harder and harder line during this convention?

. >> and when ron johnson gave his remarks at this convention, which is unusual because he is vulnerables year -- not a lot of them are speaking at this convention -- that was the centerpiece of his address to the convention. he said i provoked that from hillary clinton, as if they had had a great confrontation there. but for you to show that the way it ends -- "thank you very much, madam secretary." >> we're going to see that one line of "what difference does it make" in republican commercials. and i have never seen a republican presentation of that line that included any context at all. and certainly not tonight. there were other little interesting flourishes in mike pence's speech. when he was talking about hillary clinton possibly appointing judges, they were called "unelected judges." in the very next sentence, he talked about donald trump appointing supreme court judges. and so, there's that little maneuver that they do with judges whenever they're talking about a democrat appointing them. ted cruz recently this year reduced the supreme court to five lawyers in washington, the majo

hard to tell from this distance, but when you look at the expert prognostication, senators like ron johnson in wisconsin and mark kirk in illinois and rob portman in ohio and pat toomey in pennsylvania and others, but particularly these guys, they're all facing a situation where they don't have great approval ratings to start out with, they're not super popular to start out with anyway, and their states are likely to go bright blue for hillary clinton if trends hold. and they all have very strong democratic challengers on that same ballot, trying to oust them from their senate seat. so it looks not great for at least these four senators but a lot more besides. john mccain is also vulnerable this year because of the same dynamics at work in his home state of arizona. but john mccain is if nothing else a political survivor. and at home in arizona, he has faced tough re-election battles before. you can tell that in part mathematically. because he's up this year in 2016, that also means he was up the last time six years ago. and six years ago was 2010. yeah, 2010 was a great year for the republ

what is happening so far and what needs to be done to make ron johnson, pat toomey. >> they need to formrump supporters and people who are offended by donald trump. that's why you don't see the senators, most of them coming up for re-election, guns blazing. they need his supporters in their camp. so each of them are making their own calculation. mark kirk is the most outspoken. then you have toomey and others. i know melania in the speech structurally, we're talking about the campaign but there's concern that hillary clinton is dominating the airwaves. donald trump gets nowhere. what about the money for the get out the vote effort? those are big concerns. >> let me talk about messaging. when you look at the issue of, monday and tuesday has been about the reddest of red meat. and i think monday and tuesday of conventions are supposed to be, your audience is smaller. tonight is the night you'll start getting casual people in and more casual people tomorrow night. they should start broadening their field. how do they do it? >> well, i think they should start with mike pence offering the pre

and then came the news that the senator ron johnson, the senate homeland security and government affairsmittee has also sent a letter to james comey asking for additional information why he came up with his findings, so that's out there. and then along came the representative bob goodwin, the judiciary committee, saying the attorney general, loretta lynch, is scheduled to testify again on this and other topics, but this particularly, on july 12th, which is next week. she hasn't made her findings public yet. hopefully they're not jumping the gun on that. you can't get away from the headlines, even with the glitzy atlantic city news conference. >> the one person you left out is hillary clinton herself. what we had today, she gave a powerful speech, fiery speech. she made a strong case against trump, not just bankruptcies, but the sense of fraud and using people an squeezing the system in unethical ways. this is a strong speech. there was an 800 pound gorilla on the stage and that's the e-mail controversy. as long as that's out there, there is -- she can't go on much longer trying to ignore
