nbc's ron mott has been digging into the suspect's background. ron, good morning. >> reporter: willie, good morning to you. this is where thet' susp been living. we understand he moved in about two years ago. residents here and places where he's lived over the years pretty much all report the same thing, that he was unusually quiet, that he kept to himself, didn't mix it up with him very much. that he has stunned been charged for these horrific murders. this morning investigars are uncovering the motives of a killer. robert bowers is not believed to have a prior criminal history but socialedia posts attributed to him include antisemitic views and this was an indicator of the deadly violence about to unfold. on the social networking site dab his page wrote, quote, screw your optics, i'm going in. he repeatedly posted photos of guns. it's unclear they were the same three that bowers used to carry out the attacks. the 46-year-old lived at this apartment complex which official evacuated before checking the area for explosives. >> we could hear the sho

. >> joining me is ron mott in pittsburgh. tom winter. ron, i want to start with you in pittsburgh. it has to be god-awful being down there and talking to the community as they are going through this. what can you tell us it's like at the moment and where does the community stand in its process of trying to come to terms with this and beginning to heal? >> pittsburgh is a great city. it's a blue collar and hardworking town. people take care of each other. to see this happen as people did early saturday morning, it's a crushing blow to the soul and the spirit of this sea. while there are a lot of media around me, a lot of folks who had short conversations with us want to remind all of our viewers that the real focus especially right now should be on the families of the 11 people who lost their lives. i must say there is fascination with the suspect in this case as you might imagine. there is a tendency to want to lay your eyes on a human being as to go into a house of worship and blow people away and shoot them and kill them want only. several vehicles out of the courthouse, we don't

nbc news correspondent ron mott is in pittsburgh. hat's it like there today, and what's the feeling about the president's visit? >> reporter: well, we know that the president is expected to land here at pittsburgh international airport perhaps just a little bit before 4:00 eastern time. i'm outside of upmc presbyterian hospital, where there are still four victims from saturday's shooting recovering, two of them police officers, two of them con gre gants. i can tell you, one of the reasons, among probably several, that a lot of folks here think the president's timing is a bit off is that a presidential visit is very disruptive in terms of just logistics and traffic. i just got caught in a huge traffic jam coming out of the congregation where there was one of those funerals today. tons and tons of cars. it was quite striking to me the number of people who were there, number one, and the diversity coming out of that synagogue was quite striking. i noticed a few members of the pittsburgh steelers coming out. so that's what the folks here

ron mott, on the scene there for us in pittsburgh, pennsylvania, thank you, ron, let's go to nbc's allynapolis, who's at a rally. >> reporter: these remarks ran over an hour long. we are here at the future farmers of america conference. he did lead off with a strong condemnation of the anti-semitic attack that happened in pittsburgh. the crowd here, many of them weren't necessarily even aware that any kind of mass tragedy had happened. the mood here before the president arrived was one of celebration. this is an annual conference for young people. when the president got on stage, he of course led with those somber remarks but quickly moved on to an agriculture focussed pitch basically of his administration and the kinds of efforts that they have undertaken, that includes deregulation, that includes trade with china, some of those tariffs that we've covered so much on this network, and then it also extended into a little bit of a political pitch because he brought two congressmen over here, up on stage, and said i'm not going to even mention their opponents, and the fact that they're ali

nbc's ron mott is outside the tree of life synagogue. n, first, and most importantly here, what do we know about the memorial plans for the victims? >> reporter: well, craig, as you mentioned, the first of the funerals beginning today. they will last throughout the rest of the week, and as you've also mentioned, a lot of people here want this to be a period of reflection and not something that we put into the political sphere. when the chief politician of the united states makes a scheduled visit, it's almost hard, if not impossible to do that. you can see that the memorial is set up back here just outside the synagogue. people have been coming by paying their respects since that awful tragedy took place on saturday. just a few moments ago -- and maybe this is perhaps an indication of the president's itinerary this afternoon -- they've installed some barriers here. we don't know his official schedule, we may know it as it happens in realtime. perhaps this is an indication he may plan to come by the synagogue here today. lot of people resi

nbc ron mott is on the ground in pittsburgh for us. let's talk about how the community is doing in the wake of this tragedy. >> reporter: well, this is obviously just a little bit more than 24 hours since this all unfolded yesterday at the synagogue. this community is still stunned. we've been down here in the southern suburbs of pittsburgh. this is the apartment complex with robert bowers has lived the past two years and we'll get back to that in a moment. this awful tragedy that unfolded at tree of life yesterday, eight men, three women who had their lives taken. three congregations in that temple who were all celebrating their faith yesterday when all hell, you will forgive me, broke loose when this gentleman came into their synagogue. what we have learned today is that crime scene, and it's a very extensive crime scene, a very large building, authorities are saying it could take the better part of a week before they're cleared with their investigation at that location. their work wrapped up here fairly quickly yesterday. they did c

joining me from pittsburgh is ron mott. robert bowers appeared in court today. what do we know? >> reporter: it was a quick court appearance, ali. we had a lot of anticipation at the start of the day that he would not appear. he had several gunshot wounds. we believe we saw the caravan come in an hour before the scheduled part start of the initial appearance. we believe we may have seen the caravan leave after the appearance. he was handcuffed. the judge asked him to identify himself, and then asked if he understood the charges against him, and that was pretty much it. he was briefly had his handcuffs he leased so he could sign paperwork, confer with his court appointed attorney, and then left the courthouse and due back here on thursday. having talked to people here since saturday afternoon, they want this focus, obviously, from the country on these 11 people, and their families. 11 people lost their lives on saturday morning. and to remember the 6 people who are still recovering tonight who were injured in that shootout, but there is going to be two words that are echoed here

i want to turn now to ron mott, he is outside the alleged shooter's home in pittsburgh with more. i know they were searching that apartment last night. tell us a bit more about what investigator have found, what they were looking for in that search last night? >> reporter: hey, david. one of the critical things they were looking for last night in this building behind me were explosives. so some of the residents evacuated. i believe there are about 11 units in this building behind me. you can see things are all clear this morning. they did enter mr. bowers' apartment around 7:00 last night. don't know what was taken,, if anything, out of that apartment. but officials are saying they're going to dig into all aspects of his life over the next days and the next week. and particularly one question of concern that a lot of people will have is is there anyone else who knew what he might have been planning. one of the residents here said that robert bowers moved in about two years ago and that he found him to be unusual for how remarkably quiet he was. he was not described as an unfriendl
