i want to bring in ted rowlands now.how did a school shooter serving three life sentences break free? >> reporter: how was he in a minimum security prison facility? that is something the warden will look into. lane did not get very far. captured 100 yards away from the main perimeter fence of the facility. they knew about his escape relatively quickly after he scaled a fence, apparently, and they were able to set up a law enforcement perimeter. his movement was limited. they got a helicopter with infrared ability. he was out for six hours, you can imagine what was going on at chardon and chardon high school. they canceled classes at all classes today so people can spend time with families. this just brought up all of the old wounds. you imagine the anxiety they went through in the community overnight and with the people in the community near the prison here in lima went through as well. the headline is they have him in custody, but questions need to be answered as they follow-up. >> you think about the fear in the commun

let's bring in cnn's ted rowlands where protesters are starting to gather.rguson, a town as though the area is still something of a tinderbox. >> yeah. absolutely, jake, and if you look at this situation that is just developing right now it has all of the ingredients of more trouble here in ferguson. you see the police presence here, there are literally hundreds of police officers, state police, local and county police officers and protesters, as you mentioned. the plan for the proest testers was to come down here and shut down interstate 70 which runs just below here and we're basically on an overpass. on either side, the police have established a perimeter and are not allowing protesters to go past and now the protesters are coming right up to the edge. they've been instructed that if they get too close to the off ramp they will be arrested. so par we haven't seen any arrests and just within the last five minutes you can feel the anger and the anxiety starting to develop. so we'll see what happens in the next few moments and the hours to come, but the plan

cnn's ted rowlands is on the screen for us. what's happening right now?on, across from the police station. a number of those protesters that were trying to shut down i-70 gave up and have now shut down a street just outside the police department here in ferguson. what you don't see is any police presence at all. there's a massive police presence still over at i-70. these people relocated and they plan to keep this road shut down to prove their point. they want a special prosecutor appointed to the mike brown case. and they say they are going to keep doing this until demands are set. this isn't a very well traveled road, but you can see the people did come down this road are now stuck and they are trying to come around. you can see the first couple of police officers making their way out of the police department building on the other side of the road. this is the first we've seen of police presence. but we'll be here all night and give you any developments that happen. it has started raining here, maybe that will affect the amount of protesters. one sheet

ted rowlands, thank you so much. let's bring in cnn's tom foreman.g at how this is being felt across the country. you saw it right there. this is really a travel nightmare. >> it really is. at this moment, brianna, there are still people trapped in chicago's airports even though the faa has been trying to sort this thing out for hours. and this is how it all started. look at this. this tremendous hole in the sky over the chicago area. that opened up after all these flights were shut down. normally with a weekend looming, this would be solidly filled in. but not today. then the rippled started, causing cancellations everywhere. and because this radar center handles jets at high altitude, even cross-country flights that had nothing to do with this area were affected. the faa called in extra help down here in indianapolis at a center there. but they had trouble transmitting information between computers and some flight info had to be entered manually. as of this hour, about 1,800 flights have been canceled at o'hare and midway and big delays for all the

i want to bring in ted rowlands. what is the latest from authorities on this bizarre story?er: well, what they're doing now is interviewing that individual who tried to commit suicide and who apparently started this fire which caused so much chaos. they're also assessing the damage. that control facility, located in aurora, illinois, about 40 miles outside of chicago, it's still down. some work is being done at a facility in indianapolis, that's enaging a few flights to trickle in and out of o'hare, midway and milwaukee. the lion's share of flights are grounded here and in airports across the country. this is the result, lines extending hundreds of people in these terminals in line. a lot of these folks have been waiting for hours, being rebooked. people started -- this process started in the 6:00 a.m. hour this morning. it has caused, as you can imagine, a massive ripple effect. the faa has extended the ground stop for another two hours, 4:00 p.m. eastern time. they'll reassess at that point. we're awaiting a news conference from aurora with local authorities for more infor
