he will be in the runoff but roy moore, judge roy moore, he wins tonight or comes in first place tonight, comfortably ahead of luther strange. it's safe to say that makes luther strange the underdog heading into this runoff which is six weeks from now. two things we can tell you. take a closer look at the map here, first of all how this went down. luther strange, his support really concentrated strongest in and around birmingham, the suburbs of birmingham. a few other metro areas around the state. that's where they did that best. you talk about these college changed suburbite republicans, that's his constituency. if you want to look where this runoff is really going to be decided, it's in the northern part of the state right here. this is basically the fifth congressional district of alabama, the third candidate, moe brooks, very conservative. this is his home district. he got most of his votes up here tonight. this is why i think roy moore is the favorite going into the runoff. these are roy moore voters on paper. they're conservative, grassroots, anti-establishment. donald trump was tr

trump was trying to push an establishment candidate against roy moore. like republican voters in alabama looked at that and said, mr. president, we like you, but we're not buying it. and so this is something to keep an eye on because democrats were looking at this result tonight and are going to be looking ahead to that runoff because they say if there's one candidate they think that could maybe have a chance of beating in december when the general election is held, it's roy moore. he's very controversial. democrats said they needed to get their preferred candidate, someone who can put money behind, they got him through permanent don't, doug jones. they think if they do, maybe they can have a shot. showing you what they're up against. this is how democrats have done in the last generation here in alabama. you can see they won barely in '86. this was a cutoff point. since then democrats have gotten smoked in senate elections in alabama haven't even been close. they're up against some profound history and and regional shifts. there are very much underdogs

but roy moore has been leading of recent.e that is probably why mitch mcconnell is so desperate to get the president to get behind strange this configureel. has it had an impact on the ground in are you seeing strange benefiting now from the trump endorsement? >> the very early results of that poll that you're refrptsing, and keep in mind that poll was done before strange really went on the air, showed that the endorsement actually hurt brooks' favorable is, knocked them down by about 4%. strange didn't seem to get any immediate benefit from the endorse am of the in fact, the poll actually showed that roy moore who polls a little bit better with strange with people who strongly support trump actually saw his numbers go up a little bit more. so at this point we really haven't seen the full impact of trump's endorsement yet. but give it a few days. give strange's ads time to germ nature and we'll probably know for sure highway big a deal that really was. >> let me talk about the mitch mcconnell factor p because i think sometime

roy moore ran for governor in 2006, ran in 2010. is this finally his moment in 2017?e you had mo brooks, he before this campaign when donald trump was in alabama last year, running for republican nomination for president, mo brooks didn't just not support donald trump. he called him a serial adulterer. he said he was not morally fit to be president of the united states. now mo brooks is trying to run against a candidate endorsed by donald trump. that's an interesting element to this. as you said and garrett was telling you, luther strange, big luther they call him, 6'9", he's sort of torn right now, technically the incumbent, appointed to the seat months ago. mitch mcconnell, the republican senate leader, is pulling out all the stops for him. here is the question and the results will answer this. there's sort of a scale here. is he going to be weighted down more by mitch mcconnell being actively behind him and robert bentley, the governor of alabama to who had to resign, pleaded guilty to ethics violations, he's the guy who appointed luther strange. so is he going to

roy moore is controversial on the national stage.ial conservatism can veer into an anti-americanism. putin might be right that america can be a source of evil in the world. he came in first place and strange came in second. no one knows how it will shake out in the end but moore has the edge. we don't know how it will shake off. >> bill: it is a very interesting divide now you see and evangelicals love roy moore. he was the judge who stood up to the government when they tried to remove the 10 commandments out of the judicial building in alabama and he did it twice. >> that has build up a big support among evangelical christian voters in alabama. he is still controversial. moore, after he left the supreme court race. a bunch of people who voted for romney didn't vote for moore in 2012. whichever republican wins this runoff is probably going to be the next senator from alabama. you never know for sure. when a president's job approval ratings is in the 30s and both are controversial for different reasons you never know what will happen.
