jennifer rubin. joining me is hayes brown, writer and editor with msnbc daily.g to both of you, jen ruben, you and i have talked for years. i am fully in the column of policy and debate wins the day. increasingly over the last few weeks i am hearing very smart people whom i respect saying, velshi, you're stupid, it is not going to work this time. this time it is about fighting fire with fire. >> well, i think it is about democrats giving up on the notion that they get brownie points for bipartisanship. they have bought into this notion that because biden said he wanted to do things in a bipartisan way that republicans' refusal to do anything, even the commission, means that they can't do anything. that's nonsense. of course, the big example was the american rescue plan. the republicans were not interested in doing anything, the democrats said, fine. they pushed ahead. they used reconciliation. lo and behold, it passed. lo and behold it became extremely popular, to the point where republicans are now touting it as a great accomplishment to their own constituents.

. >> joining me now, donna edwards, former congresswoman, john breznahan and jennifer rubin, writer forthank you for being here. let me get your reaction to president biden there. it sounds like it's a reassertion of the united states' role as leader on the global stage. after four years of trump, congresswoman edwards, is it too late for that? >> no. i don't think it's too late. i think it was refreshing to hear president biden actually talking about the role of the united states in the world. the importance of lifting up human rights, especially to president xi and president putin, because they very directly have been most involved in some of the most egregious acts of human rights violations. the united states has to reassert that in its international policy. i think it becomes challenging when you look -- you cast that with a vote that was cast on the january 6 commission. it is challenging to think of the united states and to reassert our role there when we can't quite get ahold of what's happening with our own democracy. >> jennifer? >> yeah, i think that's an excellent point that
