i'm stephanie ruhle. we're closely following two major storms churning through the atlantic this morning. maria has become one of the fastest growing hurricanes ever. she made landfall overnight as dangerous category 5. that's the highest. with its sights set on the u.s. virgin islands and puerto rico. jose is making its way north, threatening to bring heavy rain and strong winds along the northeast coast starting today. we have a great team of reporters across the atlantic covering these two major storms. i want to start in san juan, puerto rico, where nbc's tammy litner is standing by. cities like san juan do have strong building codes. they have earthquakes. they have california codes and they're coastal. so they've got florida codes. when you get outside san juan, into the rural areas, people are truly at risk. >> that's right, stef, we spent a lot of time yesterday driving through some of these rural areas and talking with people. i can tell you prep has been under way here in san juan and some of th

i'm stephanie ruhle. rescuers are running out of time trying to find survivors after the massive earth quake that hit tuesday afternoon. nbc confirmed a total of 273 people have died, thousands still remain missing. rescuers are focusing on several sites in mexico city including a primary school and factory. msnbc's steve patterson is outside that collapsed glass factory. steve, what are you seeing on the ground there specifically? >> reporter: a lot of active, stephanie. i want to step up and show you this. we have to play jazz right now. there's so much active. they're pulling rubble from the scene that you see in front of us. you see all the workers, maybe about a thousand in total since we've seen this scene last night. this was a collapsed factory. you're looking at workers with sledge hammers. last night they were using backhoes, using the giant crane to lift debris, anything they can do to get in there to see if there's any sign of life or survivors. when they do that, the entirety of this scene go

my friend stephanie ruhle travelled there and made her way back.puerto rico joins us live from there. buddy quite a tour. you have seen remarkable destruction, by the way, a lot of people hadn't seen, because we had been watching what happened after the storm hit florida. that was something. the places, the destruction that you watched. >> reporter: ali i want you to tune in now and over the next couple of days, because it was so remote where we were. we were so cut off, we couldn't even get the images to you until now. just a few minutes ago arrived via boat in puerto rico. we got to san juan and greeted by tent after tent of individuals, church groups, ngos in puerto rico who put together massive care packages. water, tarps, food, for their friends and neighbors in the virgin islands. we don't realize in the united states how close they are. it's just an hour and a half boat ride from san juan to st. john and the people here feel so close to their neighbors, but i grateful. remember, just a week and a half ago when we were looking at that storm p
