rupp, what are you seeing now in your hospital? i say this in the context of the atlanta mayor saying that icu units in hospitals across atlanta are at capacity. what are you seeing, dr. rupp? >> well, i think we're doing a little bit better here in omaha, nebraska. we are obviously seeing cases. we're having to open special floors of the hospital to take care of patients with this infection or with rule out for this infection. we're stressed just like every other hospital in the country, but we are making good progress and continuing to plan ahead and being as judicious as possible. we're still facing a lot of the things that other people are, as far as not being able to test everybody that we want. having a shortage of personal protective equipment. we've actually started to irradiate our n-95 respirators so that we can reuse them. we're trying to stretch our supplies just as far as we possibly can. >> dana, on this point, this has been an issue for not just the governor of new york but across the states. you can point the states

mark rupp jones us. he's the infectious control chief at the university of nebraska medical center, and he has been overseeing treatment for coronavirus patients. sanjay, let me start with you. so these new guidelines which trump put forth from the cdc, they say gatherings of no more than 10 people. yesterday that was 50. we know yesterday you had states doing 100 and 250 and 1,000. it has dramatically come down and now down to ten. what does the fact this is changing so quickly say to you? >> well, it says two things. i think first of all these are somewhat arbitrary numbers, obviously. there's no magic number in terms of size of gathering. although one can argue there shouldn't be gatherings. social distance means social distance, and you know no gatherings probably is going to meet that requirement. i think what i get the sense of, erin, the strategy is not shock people too much, to introduce these things slowly so people aren't too shocked. and i think when you saw dr. fauci come back up to the lecte

mark rupp, he's the director infectious diseases at the university of nebraska medical center.f you would update us on how many patients you have there now. at one point you had 15, and i wanted to get a sense of how their recovery is going. >> we are doing well. we successfully discharged some of the patients from the quarantine unit. we have one of those patients in the bio containment unit that came from tour community related to travel. so we are starting to see some cases within the community related to travel and close contact with that patient. but our experience is mir yoorg what we have seen throughout the country. lou: with testing, there is confusion about how many tests have been put out and it's sort of inexplicable to me that there has been in some cases apparently hundreds of thousands of test kits sent out but without a way in which to report whether those test kits have been used and whether the results are positive or negative. >> first of all, we welcome the increased amount of resources coming to bear on this. the announcement of billions of dollars coming o

mark rupp. he's the infectious diseases director at the university of nebraska medical center.n. and appreciate your time. let's start with, first, the prospects for the drug that you are testing and working on. >> well, first of all, we have a terrific team here and, actually, dr. andre khalil is spearheading those efforts here. we are in the first clinical trial here in the united states with a drug, and this medication is inhibiting the viral replication. we've had one patient who has successfully received a study drug and has improved and has been transferred out of our biocontainment unit and continues to do well. we've had four people actually in the last 48 hours get transferred out of the quarantine unit and on their way home. so we're very pleased with how things are going. lou: well, that's very encouraging. and your sense of the president, obviously, is leading the nation, directing as much as any president could the effort to come up with a antiviral drug, a vaccine as quickly as possible. is it your sense that -- what are the limits to actually accelerating those e

rupp you've been treating the coronavirus for patients. what do we know? >> i think a lot of it has been brought out this is spreadsing, this is something people need to be concerned about. it's not something we need to panic about but we do need to have responsible social distancing put into place and we commented about that when do you put in the public health measures of closing schools and putting in social distancing and when do you not do that? and i think that's the question a lot of people would like to have answers for. when they see community spread it then makes sense to put those measures into place. prior to that we're probably just disrupting peoples lives without really having cause to do so. >> so sanjay, we are learning today and i know this is new information just the past hour or so that people infected with coronavirus could be symptom-free for about five days on average and they should expect to experience symptoms within somewhere around 12 days. how hard does this make it to contain? because this has been a big question on asymptomic

mark rupp. he's the infectious disease expert at the university of nebraska.n5 masks. i was surprised we would need to do that, and turn to the military as well. that we have not converted production to meet the demand for those essential masks for our healthcare providers. >> we welcome the help from federal sources and from our industrial partners, construction companies. there are clearly some specifics they need to get into. the n95 respirators have to be fitted to be effective and use new. our hospital like other places, we are getting towards a critical shortage and we are putting in place everything we can to stretch our supplies. we are starting to put in measures to reuse them. we are looking at ways to disinfect them so they are safe to be used again. we are doing everything we can to stretch the capacity of those devices. this does point to some weaknesses of our current be system. with the he a is of not having the -- with the emphasis, this is a weakness that's coming back to bite us. we cannot ship the supplies to other parts of the country like

rupp, the cdc is urging americans to limit gatherings to no more than ten people.restaurants, bars, theaters, to limit public contact. some states are postponing elections. how severe does the social distancing effort need to be to have a significant impact? in other words, the states not doing the most extreme measures, do you expect to see results that indicate that in a few weeks? >> well, these measures do need to be aggressive and far-reaching. clearly you don't want to wait until it's too late and you're already having lots of spread through the community before you put these into place because then they're just not going to be as effective. so the far-reaching measures, increasing social distancing, closing gatherings, these are all very, very important at this point because they don't have medications. we don't have a vaccine. we're back to old-fashioned garden variety infection control and public health, and that means achieving that social distancing. now, the amount of people that can get together, the number of people, that's fairly arbitrary. and the r
