ryan nobles is at the capitol tonight. ryan, what are the options here >> reporter: we should find that out next week, and that's because president biden made phone calls today to house speaker kevin mccarthy and other congressional leaders, asking them to come to the white house for a meeting on may 9th to negotiate the debt ceiling showdown the president has been under pressure, especially after house republicans and mccarthy passed an increase to the debt ceiling but only if democrats would agree to steep spending cuts it was thought of as a way to bring biden back to the negotiating table. biden said he'd only agree to a debt ceiling increase with no other strings attached earlier today the president and speaker appeared no closer to making a deal. >> we pay our bills and should do so without hostage taking from some of the maga republicans in congress >> we will not pass the debt ceiling if it just raises it without doing something about our debt >> reporter: this new letter from the treasury secretary brings with it a

joining me now is nbc news capitol hill correspondent ryan nobles, what more do we know?earning quite a bit of new information about congressman's office in fairfax, virginia. the attacker came into the office with a metal bat, as you point out, he said he was looking for the congressman. he attacked the two staffers, and we learned that one of the staffers was actually an intern, and this was her first day on the job. she was hit by that metal bat in the side. both of the staffers did end up going to the hospital. they are both ultimately expected to be okay. after the attack on the two staffers, the man proceeded to run rough shot through the office, destroying computers, breaking glass in a conference room, and a number of other things. the man is described as a constituent of connolly's, someone who lives in fairfax, but it's not exactly clear if he had any exposure or connection to their office prior to this event today. police are still investigating at this point. they have said in a press conference just a few minutes ago that from their early investigation, it ap

ryan nobles is in washington for us. ryan, speaker mccarthy said he st deal, reached by june 1st.e's what one of the top gop negotiators said earlier today. let's listen and talk on the other side. >> i don't think things are going well, until the white house understands they have a spending crisis, tax crisis and debt crisis we're not going to be able to make this deal. >> i don't think things are going well, i don't think we're going to be able to make a deal. doesn't sound good. what are the sticking points that prevent both sides from reaching a compromise. >> doesn't sound good when you hear garrett graves speak about it but i talked to the speaker a few minutes ago and he struck a more optimistic tone saying he believes they can get a deal by june 1st. the reality is he has no plans to meet with the president any time soon and there are a number of issues they still don't see eye-to-eye. a list of the things they're still negotiating over. still talking about spending cuts and potential caps. they're talking about work requirements how that would fit in to these negotiations

nbc news correspondent ryan nobles joins me now live from fairfax, virginia. what do we know about the injured staffers? are they still in hospital tonight? >> we've got good news in regards to that, mehdi. the congressman himself, gerald connolly, i did a lengthy interview with our hill team just about 25 minutes ago where he thankfully said both members of his staff have been released from the hospital. he said they are expected to make a full physical recovery. the congressman is worried right now about the trauma of that his staff experienced through this horrific event. you know, to have an individual walk into a public place, a place where the staff expects people to walk through that door and asked questions about the work of the federal government and the role a congressman can help in that process, and then all of a sudden go on the attack. and it is, unfortunately, a trend that we are seeing happen more and more across the country, as members of congress and their staff have really become targets. >> i want to come back to that in the moment. just for

ryan nobles is on the scene. he has the latest for us. ryan, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. authorities say that they believe the man driving that u-haul intentionally crashed into this barricade here behind me. and a law enforcement official telling nbc news he was making threatening statements against the white house at the scene. this morning the man who crashed a u-haul truck into barriers near the white house is accused of making threats to the vice president or president. u.s. park police saying the man was arrested overnight on the charges associated with the incident include assault with a dangerous weapon, reckless driving and threatening to kill, kidnap or inflict harm on a president, vice president or family member. this video posted overnight showing a u-haul truck slamming into barriers at lafayette square, a block away from the white house. investigators were removing a flag with a swastika from the scene. officers with the secret service uniformed division detained the driver after the collision. this comes

>> joining me now is kristin welker and ryan nobles staying with us. the speaker told his conference this morning, the republicans, their caucus, that they are nowhere near a deal yet. what can be accomplished in talks today? as you know, it's a week or so away. they have to have time to get through the house and senate. they need some kind of an extension or something to get anything done. >> reporter: in many ways it seems to be mixed messages from the public statements from the house speaker, kevin mccarthy. he has talked about the talks being productive. he talked about them making progress. then when he talks to his caucus behind closed doors he says the two sides are really far apart. we know that some of the big issues here that are outstanding is the amount of cuts that the white house is willing to stomach, that republicans would like to see a lot more than what the white house is willing to do. we know these negotiations have been going on back and forth. we know the playing field they are working from. listen to what some of the negotiators

nbc news capitol hill correspondent ryan nobles joins us now. ryan, how the heck did this happen? >> reporter: ana, you're asking the same question that secret service is asking right now, they said that they have started that investigation into how this massive security breach took place. they said that they've actually already started to change their protocols as a result whale the investigation continues. it's important to point out, though, that from what we know about this particular incident, according to "the washington post," that the intruder that got into sullivan's house appeared to be intoxicated. he didn't even know where he was. when sullivan approached him, he left the house, but those secret service agents that were guarding the house had no idea that he had gotten in and that he had gotten back out and sullivan had to actually tell them that the intruder was in his house. there was no sign of forced entry, no physical altercation, and it didn't appear as though sullivan or his family were at risk at any point in time. the secret service is taking this seriously. i

nbc capitol hill correspondent, ryan nobles, joins me now live. ryan, good morning. both president biden and his speaker kevin mccarthy saying, they're confident a deal will be done by the new ex-date of june 5th, but what is the latest on negotiations, and frankly, what are the chances the house could be called back from recess? >> katie, it's funny that you mention garrett graves, because about 30 seconds ago, he just walked behind me here outside the house chamber into the house speaker kevin mccarthy's office. it sounds as though, it looks as though, neither go shades are beginning in earnest this morning. grace was on the phone, didn't answer my question as to whether or not they're close, but it does seem like they're inching closer and closer to that potential deal. you're absolutely right that june 5th deadline as opposed to the june 1st deadline just gives them a bit more breathing room to push all the serious parts of these negotiations in order, and then get through the legislative process in an orderly fashion. just give them time to deal with any potenti

nbc capitol hill correspondent ryan nobles joins me now along with carol leonnig of "the washington postrol, carol, we always seem to be talking at times like this. how does this happen? how does somebody just walk through the door of someone with secret service protection? >> you know, chris, that's whey we wrote the story because, you know, we expect and hope that the secret service protection, the bubble that is around the national security adviser, is better than a person who appeared to be confused and intoxicated walking in the front door of the home of that person. it's so striking, and we are still trying to understand what exactly happened other than jake sullivan has full-time protection. he has agents who are station outside his home, and they were unaware on that particular night that a person walked inside roughly at 3:00 in the morning on a weekend evening. >> so ryan, i was listening to andrea's show an hour ago, and john bolton was on and he said i don't know of anybody who's been protected by the secret service where this has developed. i wonder what reaction, if any, yo

ryan nobles, our nbc capitol hill correspondent is here with me on set. and clint watts, west point graduate, army veteran, former fbi special agent, is also here. clint, i have been watching you on television throughout the day today on our network. every town, for gun safety, says that georgia actually has some of the weakest gun laws in the country. after you have seen everything that has unfolded today, what stands out to you most about this shooting? >> it is all the things that we talked about. we have talked about red flag laws, nearly every week this year, when it comes down to mass shootings and what we see here. look, this person, we don't know all the details yet. but it sounds like he was there for a mental health appointment. he had access to a weapon. he took that weapon and then used it. he killed one and many other casualties. look back earlier in the week. we had a neighbor confront another neighbor about the shooting of an ar-15 in the backyard. we then saw a series of murders. and in both cases we had manhunts which shut down and terror

. >> ryan nobles is on capitol hill for us. we didn't play the rest of that clip, but even maria was like, what? so no proof, and no informant, what more do we know about this? >> reporter: well, what's even more intriguing about this, chris, is that apparently the informant is different than the whistleblower that congressman comer claimed came forward with the initial inquiry with senator chuck grassley that began the road they've gone down, asking for information from the fbi as it relates to the investigation into the biden administration. there continues to be a lot of smoke with their investigation, and not a lot of fire. listen to comer describe exactly what they are looking for. >> nine of the ten people that we've identified that have very good knowledge with respect to the biden's, they're one of three things, maria. they're either currently in court. they're currently in jail. or they're currently missing. >> reporter: again, not many specifics there, and it is coined of the hallmark of this investigation right now.

joining us now, nbc's ryan nobles and jim cavanaugh, retired atf special agent in charge. ryan, what exactly happened, what are you learning, what do we know about the driver? >> reporter: yeah, ana, let me first show you exactly what the scene looks like right now. you can see these tire tracks here beneath me. this is where the u-haul came crashing into this barrier right here in front of lafayette park. you can see just how close this is to the white house. we're only about a block away. and this was a pretty substantial size u-haul and the concern in the meet aftermath was what was inside the u-haul and that forced security officials to clear a whole swath of area around lafayette park, they ended up evacuating a hotel nearby, just while they investigated to make sure that the security situation was contained. what ended up happening was that they were able to quickly put the driver under arrest and at the time a law enforcement official tells us the driver was making very specific threats against the white house and the individual they ended up arresting, his name is s

ryan nobles, you're following the story for us, what did we hear today? >> reporter: well, we heard a long list of accusations from this group of former fbi agents who the republican members of the committee describe as whistleblowers. they suggest that the fbi used its power to go after conservative groups, pro life groups, and other groups. and that it was against the agency's overall mission. listen to what one of these fbi agents told the panel this morning. >> despite our oath to uphold the constitution, too many in the fbi aren't willing to sacrifice for the hard right over the easy wrong. they see what becomes of whistleblowers, how the fbi destroys their careers, suspends them under false pretenses, takes their security clearances and pay with no true options for recourse or remedy. >> reporter: and to your point, chris, the fbi is pushing back on some of this testimony. they did send a letter to the committee chairman, jim jordan, outlining their concerns with at least some of the group of these whistleblowers and pointing out specifically that a

nbc's ryan nobles has been following the story from the beginning. what do we know about the suspect, and anything about his motive? >> reporter: yeah, chris, in fact just in the last hour the main suspect in this case, 19-year-old sai kandula appeared in court. prosecutors revealed he is not a united states citizen, and it appears that he is not even a lawmaker permanent resident. prosecutors said at this point they cannot determine his country of origin, and they're still attempting to figure out what his immigration status might be. now, this comes after kandula was charged with a number of crimes related to smashing that u-haul truck into barricades outside lafayette park, which is of course just a block away from the white house, and as he was apprehended, secret service agents said in charging documents that he was saying alarming things about his admiration for the nazi party and hitler specifically, saying things that he was appreciative of their one world order, their plans for eugenics and many other things, and kandula was discovered with

. >> ken, hold on one second, i want to bring in our capitol hill correspondent ryan nobles on another story that you have some reporting on as well. let's talk about fbi agents who were suspended and had their security clearances revoked. they're calling themselves whistleblowers and they're testifying on capitol hill today about the fbi. ken, first to you, tell us who these men are, and why they had their clearances revoked. >> so two of these star witnesses, steven friend, former fbi agent, no longer with the bureau, and marcus allen who has been suspended without pay, each had their security clearances revoked, and each, according to a letter that we obtained from the fbi to the judiciary committee, each were expressing sympathies for the january 6th rioters, and deep concerns about the fbi, the justice department effort to bring some of those people to justice. in the case of allen, the fbi said he was actively undermining some of those efforts, and then in the case of friend, he refused to go on a s.w.a.t operation to essentially arrest one of these accused rioters in florida. th

capitol hill correspondent ryan nobles is in washington for us, and ryan, are negotiators hopeful a deal can be reached by that important deadline, june 1st, and that it can actually pass through congress in the next ten days? >> reporter: that's a good question, and we see signs of progress here. officials meeting with the speaker mccarthy's office, and we heard from speaker mccarthy multiple times and he did make it clear he's concerned about spending. he is very insistent that any debt ceiling legislation that passes must be accompanied with steep spending cuts and that seems to be where there is an impasse between the white house and the speaker's office, and it's coming to that number that both sides feel comfortable. perhaps that happens as soon as this evening. the president and the speaker set to meet one-on-one for the first time in several weeks. speaker mccarthy saying it is possible he walks out of that meeting with deal, and they can then begin the process of the legislative text that will serve as the exit ramp to get this crisis over with, but at this point, still no deal.

. >> nbc's ryan nobles joins me from capitol hill, also with me "new york times" chief white house correspondent peter baker and brendan buck who served as an aide to republican speaker john boehner and paul ryan. peter and brendan are msnbc political analysts. good to have you all. ryan, set the stage for us, where do we stand, and do we have any better sense of how this vote might go? >> with each passing minute, it seems more and more likely this bill will glide through the house of representatives. even though we are hearing some pretty loud voices in the opposition column, it's not nearly the kind of ground swell it would take to defeat a bill like this. there seems to be the right number of democrats and republicans to get this bill over the house threshold and into the senate, which a new fight would begin. listen to what the democratic leader had to say about the bill earlier today. >> house democrats are going to make sure that the country does not default, period, full stop. we will continue to be responsible stewards of our economy, but at the same time, it is important for house repu

as nbc news' ryan nobles reports, key meetings taking place at the white house this afternoon in hopes of avoiding that crisis. >> reporter: a high-stakes showdown in washington expected today at the white house between president biden and house speaker kevin mccarthy as the clock ticks down toward a default deadline. >> we've got to be able to solve this problem. >> reporter: the two will meet face-to-face without other congressional leaders after what was described as a productive call on sunday. biden sounded optimistic returning from the g-7 summit. at the summit, the president insisting default is off the table. >> i've done my part. we put forward a proposal that cuts spending by more than a trillion dollars. now it's time for the other side to move. >> reporter: as well as revisiting invoking the 14th amendment to raise the debt ceiling alone. >> i think we have the authority. >> reporter: though treasury secretary janet yellen cast doubts on the idea sunday and also reinforced that june 1st date as the deadline for an agreement. >> i certainly haven't changed my assessment, so

joining us with more is nbc news capitol hill correspondent, ryan nobles. an, what exactly happened? >> reporter: josÉ, first let me give you an idea of how close we are to the white house and then we will talk about what happened. take a look. you can see the tire tracks where the u-haul came through, and it kept careening through that gap there, and the white house behind me only a block away from where the u-haul ended up. the security posture did its job, and the truck was not getting further but it was close to the white house, enough so where the entire area was shutdown, including a hotel that was evacuated overnight. they were concerned, of course, with what could be inside the u-haul. after they cleared the scene they were able to open the area back up and get the people back in the hotel. that's where they arrested the suspect, who they believe, intentionally rammed this u-haul into the barriers. they found some paraphernalia inside the truck, including a swastika and nazi flag, and they are not sure what that has to do with the incident. we are to

ryan nobles with the latest on the investigation. ryan, god morning. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. and according to the criminal complaint, the suspect in this case told secret service agents that he admired the nazi party, speaking highly of their authoritarian order, eugenics and one world order a law enforcement source telling nbc news they do believe mental health is a factor in this case. this morning new details surrounding the 19-year-old suspect who police say intentionally crashed a truck into barriers just a few feet from the white house on monday night. he is from chester field, missouri, and has been federally charged. secret service and park police filing additional charges to his arrest. the president, vice president or a family member, as well as assault with a dangerous weapon, reckless driving, and destruction of federal property and trespassing. the driver embraced nazi ideology. telling agents he bought the flag online and saying, quote, nazis have a great history and describing hitler as a, quote, strong lea
