sahil, let me start with you. the biden campaign plans to launch the covid task force monday. biden transition team, not just a campaign. former surgeon general murthy has been tapped to lead that group. what more do we know about him and about the task force? >> joshua, we know that murthy is a graduate of yale medical school. he served as president obama's surgeon general for two years. he has been an outspoken voice during the coronavirus pandemic. he gave a speech at the democratic convention this year and was highly critical of the trump administration's handling of this problem. he said that the country had the talent and resources and technology to defeat this virus and in his words, what we're missing is leadership. now it looks like president-elect biden is going to put him in a position of leadership and he can show the country what he meant by that. >> emi, what do you think the significance of him building this task force before he starts to even build his cabinet? i wonder if maybe this might be politically advantageous since sometimes cabinet nominations can sort

. >> sahil, i want you to take a listen to what dr.nthony fauci said about a potential uptick in coronavirus cases following the holidays. take a listen. >> they are almost certainly is going to be an uptick because of what has happened with the travel. we understand the importance of families getting together. and it's just something that we have to deal with that we likely will have an increase in cases as we get into the colder weeks of the winter and as we approach the christmas season. we may see a surge upon a surge. we don't want to frighten people, but that's just the reality. >> sahil, how does that affect the approach and the agenda of the biden transition team? sahil, i mean that in two ways, both in terms of the public health emergency and the priority that that will need to take, but also the economic reality that this team is going to be walking into, especially when you look at, you know, just today we're seeing some new names being floated that are going to be joining his economic team, what do those names tell you? >>

so i want to build on sahil's comment.nk that what president trump has been doing in the last 48 hours is a short-term and a long-term strategy. i think in the short-term, when the race looked a lot tighter when we went to bed on tuesday night, it was about, you know, if it was going to be super-duper close, then he could drive a wedge. he could try to claim that it was stolen. he was grasping at straws. but i think that there is a longer-term strategy that there is going to be a trump on the 2024 ticket. whether that's donald trump himself, whether that's one of his sons, whether that's ivanka, he is building a base of support. he's already had that base, but he's building that base to letting them know that they have been wronged, and that they need to go and right that wrong in 2024. so i think at this point as the way the numbers are looking, it's with an eye to 2024. >> i think that's almost certainly correct. harry, bill bar who rur who run justice department in utterly shameful ways with the power of that justice de

sahil kapur is at the supreme court on a consequential day for millions of americans. mike, let's start with you. what do we know about the message that president-elect joe biden is looking to put forward today on obamacare? >> reporter: craig, ten years ago president obama had almost 60 votes in the senate and a bigger majority in the house than what biden will have when he takes office. it took every bit of effort they had to get the affordable care act across the finish line. the president-elect are already a pretty full plate, going to remind americans about what's at stake here if the affordable care act is indeed struck down by the supreme court. it's also a helpful reminder as we see those two georgia senate seats going into runoff elections, the biden campaign has always felt that health care and protections for pre-existing conditions was going to be a big issue in their campaign, both in the primary and the general election. this could be a big asset for those democratic candidates there to focus on health care. craig, the other thing we're keeping track of h

so let's go to sahil kapoor outside the supreme court.the main arguments before the court this morning. what are we going to hear? >> i'm standing at the supreme court which in just moments will hear this high stakes case as to whether the aca is valid or should be thrown out. here are the arguments. 18 red states led by texas are contending that because congress zeroed out the individual mandate for coverage, it is no longer constitutional, and they argue a second step that if the mandate cannot stand, then the rest of the law should be thrown out. this would obviously have enormous implications, about 20 million americans have gained coverage through this law. many more are benefiting from protections such as coverage for pre-existing conditions. the defenders of this law say this is an incorrect reading of the law. that you don't make a provision unconstitutional by lessening a penalty for it and the intent of congress was amply clear in 2017 when it rejected measures to undue the aca, chris. >> so, obviously, a lot of eyes are going t

mike, you heard sahil talk about this critical case in front of the supreme court today, a case we've heard about again and again during the presidential campaign not just from the presidential candidates but all the way down the ticket. biden is looking to essentially seize on this moment, draw more attention to this fight over the aca today where you are in delaware. right? >> yeah. don't forget that before the pandemic turned the world and the campaign upside down, health care, the fate of the affordable care act was a defining issue in the democratic primary when joe biden was running on expanding obama care rather than medicare for all. he expected it also to be one of the defining issues of the general election as well. and so expect to hear from the president-elect today about the real world implications for americans if this law is struck down with an eye on the two runoff elections in georgia. this could be a defining issue for the democratic candidates there. of course, biden also raising the prospect of how this would effect his administration. obviously if the law is throw
