sal, you learned chp responded to hundreds of incidents this morning. >> reporter: that's right. in the bay area, more than 100 and in oakland alone about 23. now, it's still raining very hard out here. i want to show you, i will step out of the picture. you can see interstate 80, this is the backup for the bay bridge, believe it or not, it's going hours after the -- it looks like 7:30 but it's after noon. the chp has received 100 incidents reports since midnight last night. 23 in the oakland area alone. drive times this morning, doubled and tripled as you can see some commutes have not yet recovered. chp says all of the slow traffic has actually kept the collision rate down. >> on the bright side because we've had heavier traffic we've had less collisions. normally on a rain day, we see double in the collision responses for the average day. this morning because traffic was so heavy, we didn't see that heavy call volume. once the commute lets up, traffic will speed up and that's when we're expecting to see the spinouts start up again. >> reporter: drivers are dealing with debris

back to the desk. >>> thank you, sal. we're fooling breaking news as arson investigators in san francisco look into several car fires set off this morning. brian flores joins us live now from san francisco with more on what you are learning about the situation. good morning, brian. >> reporter: hi, tori, good morning. we're on liberty and rayburn in the noe valley. this is one of the cars that was suspiciously lit on fire this morning. in fact, san francisco fire arson investigators say at least three other cars were suspiciously lit on fire just before 4:00 this morning. now, arson investigators say at least, again, four cars hit on fair, mainly in the knowwy valley area -- noe valley area. owner was woke up by his car alarm. he went outside and saw the flames coming from the car. he called 911. fire crews came here and put it out. the owner us used a -- used a garden hose to try to protect his home as well. san francisco fire investigators responded quickly to putting this fire out and three other suspicious car fires e

sal, an update?y offramp from northbound 880 also double as the onramp, if you know the way it works out. a lot of people come out of the posey tube and get on. this is causing a huge backup getting out of alameda. northbound 880 is slow. this is because of protesters. they are also at police headquarters in oakland at 7th street. they've chained themselves together with handcuffs. several police units are on the scene trying to make sure that the protesters don't actually get on the freeway. it's very, very slow. 580 is also slow. the weather has made it slow even before this happened. we're in for a mad monday morning -- bad morning commute. on the peninsula, it's been slow on 101. i would say 280 is a much better call. 280 is getting a lot of use of san bruno. and on the nimitz freeway, it's very, very slow. interstate 880 southbound is backed up from marina all the way down to 237 and beyond that to milpitas. almost every commute is slow, please allow yourself extra time and use patience. >>> hap

[ laughter ] you went to get coffee didn't you. >> that is all right. >> he needs a nelson won. >> battery problem. >> we all take it from there. >> we which check in with sal in a little bit. >>> the bay area is getting a brief break from the heavy rain. before another storm system moves in on friday. steady rain pounded the bay area most of yesterday afternoon and evening causing flooding on many of the roads. this is video from highway 121 in sonoma county. you can see the amount of water out there. chp is reminding drivers to be careful when driving on the slick highways especially during the morning commute. >> be careful, slow down and pay attention to the roads, other vehicles, and drive cautious. >> and watch out for standing water. the chp says it responded to a huge number of crashes and fender benders during last nights storm. the heavy rain also caused flooding on interstate 280 in san jose last night. one car actually got stuck in the flood waters.

sal, i know some of the showers say it's pouring and then you get clearing and stars. so it's not too bad. >> yeah. and it doesn't take much. you don't have to have the kind of day we had last thursday to mess things up. even just a little drizzle can mess things up. we have a lot of standing water out there. we also do have traffic that is normal. expect for something in the south bay. i will tell you about that in a moment. but first let's take a look at -- since this is such a big problem,ly go to it first. let's go to highway 17. we have a problem reported on highway 17 in the santa cruz mountains. both directions of highway 17 are blocked by a tree that fell down. this is in santa cruz mountains and right there near -- somewhat near the summit. i wanted to mention the traffic would billion busy. if you drive on highway 17, you should get up early and think of an alternate route. we are in major trouble here for the santa cruz mountains at least for now. because of this fallen tree. i do know the chp has blocked the road. highway 17 both directions blocked by a fal

sal good morning to you we are in san leandro heading south. right now the rain sort of light but just a couple of minutes ago we had really heavy rain. we saw some really strong downpours coming down. drivers were really taking it slow. let me show you one of the problems. this is out of san francisco where there is some significant street flooding this morning. and that is obviously something that drivers in the city will want to be aware of this morning. obviously the standing water an issue on surface streets and can lead to hydroplaning and spinouts. we talked to the chp about the biggest issues they see. >> they lose control and spin out on the road. a lot of times they face the wrong way. we have to stop all the traffic and get them turned around. >> and as we bring you back out here to a live picture, we are heading south on 880 this morning in san leandro. coming up here on marina boulevard. what we really are seeing at this point is drivers really are not taking it easy. which is a good sign yesterday morning you probably got stuck in

alex. >> reporter: sal, gong to you. the rush is on to wrap up the repair work on this massive sink hole in san francisco. because more rain is coming and that is not what work crews need out here. you can see the scene this morning. the progress is being made here on this project. we're learning a little bit more this morning also about what caused this huge sink hole. it turns out it was a broken storm drain. all that water eroded the sand underneath the road and that is what trig triggered this collapse. the 20-foot by 20-foot crater opened up. here at the intersection of sixth and lake. this sink hole runs about nine feet deep. late yesterday gas and water service was restored to this neighborhood. crews will now be spending today fixing the sewer lines nearby. it may take until early next week to finish all the repairs related to this huge sink hole. in the meantime there is quite a bit of storm damage up in marin county. let me show you surveillance video that shows flood water seeping through. all around the bay a
