the salvation army facility. this is one of two alcohol and drug rehabilitation centers in san francisco. it is part of a myriad of programs we operate in the city. at harbor lights, a veterans can break free from the chains of addiction 3 comprehensive treatment program that offers progressive care, education, work force development, and character-building elements. that is combined with top not counseling and resources offered by the veterans administration's. our graduates have the opportunity to acquire the tools they need to achieve independence and lead healthy and productive lives. the salvation army has a long history with veterans dating back to world war i where our volunteer lassies provided care and aid to those serving on the front lines. i also have memories of my uncle who was in the salvation army during world war ii. he was assigned to oahu where he would show movies in the fields to servicemen. today whether they are newly enlisted, serving at home, or discharged, the salvation army is there to

jillian is the director of american harvest, and we have the national spokesperson for the salvationy. thank you so much for joining us. now, jillian, you were on the program about this time last year. you described the number of people using emergency food services for the first time in their lives because of what we're seeing economically. you're feeding 300,000 new yorkers a week. how would characterize hunger right now? >> in new york city, we're seeing a sustained high need for food. we're seeing people turn to food kitchens and food pant treries the first time, and those who i thought would be moving on are still relying on that food. people need that help getting food to their families. >> there was a central poverty measure this month that showed a record 49.1 million americans lived in poverty in 2010. does this surprise you? how shock rg these numbers? >> the numbers are very discouraging, and yet they're real. we found in own ministry and programs across the country an increase. four years ago we served 28 million people, last year we served 30 million people. so you can g

it's the voluntary agencies, the red cross, the salvation army. earlier i was introduced to the gentleman from the salvation army and i was told what good work they do. ok. well, that's not a shock to me. it's like i go back to the good work they do in the middle of a fire in the middle of a cold night in new england 34 years ago where the first time i encountered in getting that hot cup of soup or hot chocolate for myself, but more importantly, is they work to feed and house the people who were just burnt out of their home. not new. not a new concept. the red cross. for years i started as a volunteer for the red cross. ended up before i took this job as a volunteer chairman of the board of the red cross in massachusetts. had to give that up when i took this job. but an intragoodwill part of the community. in the last two years i had traveled across the country from aalaska to hawaii and the floods in new england. to a hurricane in vermont. who ever knew vermont would get struck bay hurricane? and on the ground in joplin, missouri, 14 hours after

a little story about why i love the salvation army. i am 60 years old, and i am disabled now, but i grew up in the 1950's, and a guy named jack was a young man with his wife, and he was from cincinnati. he came to south carolina with his wife martha, and he took over the boys' and girls' club there. that was in the days of segregation down south. they later became integrated. jack was one of the most beautiful guys. his older now, and has alzheimer's, but anyway, through my growing up around here and my dealings with the salvation army, or just watching them operate, a lot of people have been wondering who they can trust and who they can not as far as spending their charitable dollars. host: we will leave it there. i want to show viewers totaled -- total charitable giving -- host: what is a foundation? guest: a foundation is an organized way of giving money. the ford foundation, the bill and melinda gates foundation are the famous ones people know about. it allows people to put money away and decide where they want to give. foundations
