porter. the judge t declared a mistrial. sam sweeney is in baltimore with what is next for that city. sam: it is expected to be a busy day here in baltimore. we are waiting to find out what came of the meeting between the defense, the prosecution, and the judge in this case. we know that there will likely be two outcomes. one of them will either be a brand-new trial or the prosecution will offer some sort of immunity or some sort of plea deal to officer porter in exchange for his testimony in the subsequent trials. prosecutors line these trials of strategically. they believe that porter would have been the easiest to convict and they would've been able to use porter's testimony in the upcoming trials. that entire notion is up in the air. right now they need to decide if there's going to be another trial and if that is the case they have to decide on what's going to happen with the five other trials. will they move those back? experts say it will be difficult to convict those five other officers if they do not have porter to testify in those trials. is justilliam porter the first of si

porter. he is the first of six officers to go to trial. our sam swinney is in the ewsroom. >> they started with 150 potential jurors. eight women, four men and four male alternates. these jurors went through a lot of scrutiny. the trick was to find a jury and it would be almost impossible to find a juror that did not know about this case. william porter was the first officer charged with the death of gray and prosecutors say he ignored depray's pleas for medical help from the back of that van. they say if the prosecutors fail to convict in this case it would be nearly impossible in the upcoming trials and opening statements are likely to begin shortly. my colleague brad bell is inside that courtroom. we will have updates beginning at 4:00 p.m. jummy: sam, thank you. now we turn to the war on terror. defense secretary ash carter announcing a new plan putting special forces on the ground to carry out missions in iraq and syria. we have the latest on the new military action. >> two of the world's biggest military forces are planning stepped-up action

baltimore courtroom this noon deliberating the fate of officer william porter, one of six police officers charged in the death of freddie gray. sam sweeney is live outside the courtroom with the very latest. sam? sam: deliberations began at a: 30 this morning. by 9:00 they had their first request, they came out and asked for posted notes and highlighters. they resumed deliberations after the judge granted the request and then shortly after at 9:10 the defense came and filed a motion for a mistrial. yesterday afternoon, students went home from baltimore city public schools and were talking about not riding after the verdict comes out, to remain peaceful. the judge denied a request. at 11:00 the jury came out with another request. they wanted computer speakers so that they could play audio from the trial. the judge granted that. they are looking over all of their work. they have been asked to go through each piece of evidence and it appears by the request that they are doing that and they will continue to have deliberations throughout the day. they will take a recess for lunch and they will resume at 1:00. if there is no verdict th
