the san anselmo creek now above flood stage. kpix 5's joe vazquez is there right now for us and joins us on the phone with the very latest. joe, what's going on? >> reporter: hey, ken. right now it's raining. the rain is tapering off. that's a good sign. but there's still a flood warning in effect. a loud siren sounded here a short while ago. the san anselmo town manager tells me that they have just called for an evacuation of the downtown area. that's because nearby san anselmo creek is at 12 feet. flood stage is 13 feet. the town manager says this is a close call but we could dodge a bullet. but there's a lot of runoff and that runoff could go into the creek. back in 2005 they had 75 to 80 businesses and 300 homes flooded when the creek went over its banks. right now, in the tony little downtown, that you're familiar with a lot of little shops and homes by the creek, right now police are going around and asking people to leave the downtown area and if they don't need to be here get away from these shops. the shop managers and

now, earlier joe talked about the flooding in san anselmo but we are also hearing about flooded homes in forest knolls and lagunitas and marin county. evacuation center is being set up at the san jeronimo community center on sir francis drake for those displaced. >> thank you. >>> kpix 5's emily turner now. >> yes. she is live in another north bay city that saw lots of flooding today. she is live at the santa rosa airport. emily. >> reporter: that's right. just about three different [ indiscernible ] areas all had flooding and many were closers. just so you know, originally we thought that that flash flood warning would stop at 5:00 but as the rain slowed down the flood risk continued and it is now extended into 8 p.m. ron wan one of the many drivers who learned a soggy lesson about road closures. >> made it as far as the bmw and then had to push my -- get out and push my way out of the water but unfortunately i think the crank case is flooded and it won't turn over now. >> reporter: up in sonoma county more than a dozen roads were closed for flooding or trees down including this one

kpix 5's jackie ward is live in san anselmo where they had a close call with the town's creek. jackie. >> reporter: liz, the town manager said they were prepared for the storm that hit yesterday and that was evident by the lack of clean-up we saw in downtown san anselmo today. still, not everyone escaped this storm unscathed. more than 12 hours after this tree fell on a house on magnolia, crews were still removing it. >> one of the tall ones fell. it's a huge sense of -- oh, man. it's irreplaceable. >> reporter: the department of public works was here well into the night thursday and back out here first thing this morning trying to clean up this mess. neighbors said they heard the commotion when it fell and weren't all that surprised, given where they live in the middle of giant trees. 102 homes lost power because of this making for a chilly night. >> much colder in my unit right now than it is out here. that's why i'm out here getting relief from the cold. >> we were pretty lucky. >> reporter: the san anselmo creek is something town manager debbie is tender about every time a

kpix 5's maria medina live in the north bay this morning in san anselmo.aria, crews already prepping for the storm and the anticipated mess to clean up. >> reporter: good morning. right before the break i asked you what was wrong with this picture? if you answered all the leaves on the ground, you are right. if you haven't raked leaves outside your home and out of the storm drains, do it now. over in berkeley, city crews scrambled when they found out just how much rain was going to fall in such a short amount of time. they used a wet vac-like machine to suck up all the leaves out of the drain. and, you know, because the king tides that we're experiencing right now, they know that this area is prone to flooding. >> with high tide water can't flow out as efficiently. that's when it backs up into the storm drain system. >> can't do much about that, can you? >> not much you can do when that happens. >> reporter: so city crews not only the ones scrambling out there. residents also scrambling to rake up their leaves. so if you haven't already done so, do it now
