it's ironic that she's become a fixture here in san diego, but the midway was never really a san diego ship. the entire time midway was a pacific fleet carrier she was either based out of alameda, located across the bay from san francisco, or in japan. so it is a little odd that the midway is making quite a mark here in san diego in a port where she was never really assigned during her active duty years. san diego had a lot of difficulties in really getting itself going as an established community compared to, say, los angeles, and it has everything to do with geography. we're completely cut off by a concentric ring of continuous mountains, so san diego is basically a harbor that went nowhere. and unfortunately, although try as they might, city boosters in those years tried as best as they can to get rail lines passed through or find other ways of attracting federal and other commercial investment in san diego, but nobody was biting. that all changed in 1907 when word got out that president roosevelt was taking the united states navy, which was comprised of 16 battleships in those days
