san francisco. sergio quintana, nbc, bay area news. pg&e has repeatedly said it's working to lower rates for customers, but a new report shows the utility's recent rate hikes are far outpacing other utilities in the state. the report came out today from the public utilities commission. californians already pay some of the highest electricity bills in the united states, second only to hawaii. this report shows we've seen a steady increase in costs for multiple utilities, but the data shows pg&e customers are seeing higher increases compared to other power companies like socal edison and san diego gas and electric. this report ties many of these hikes to wildfire mitigation in an interview with the pg&e ceo patty papa, that i did with her a few months ago, she says she thinks bills will eventually go down as the utility modernizes its equipmen. so how do current utility rates compare for california's three major power companies? during a three year period from january 2021 to this october, pg&e rates went up 56%. in that same perio, they

temperatures are going to start off in the 40s throughout the bay area, so another chilly start with 44 in the east bay. san francisco, 47 in the north bay, 43. daytime highs will be in the 60s to 70 across the bay area. the warmest san jose 70, napa 67. san francisco right here at 64. but rain chances. this is the good stuff here. we're still hanging on to the possibility, even though we had that strong storm a couple weeks ago that did dump historic rain on the north bay. a lot of the east bay, south bay and peninsula could use more rainfall, and we're going to stay dry this weekend. we'll stay dry, it looks like, all the way through next thursday, december the 1h. but there could be a system developing out here offshore by next thursday that could have an atmospheric river with it. and we likely would see that storm door open back up december the 14th through the 18th. some of the early estimates are showing a half to one inch, maybe even more than that. so we're going to be all over this and we'll have those details as we get closer. but at least another storm before christmas would be awesome to get back on the

a special story in san francisco. a bay area photojournalist has now has a street named after him in downtown. it's for taking a famous photo from world war two. take a look. joe rosenthal took this famous photo called raising the flag of iwo jima during the final stages of world war two. after the w war ended, he returd to san francisco to work for the chronicle. he dedicated 35 years of his life covering the day to day happenings in the city. to honor him, san francisco supervisors unveiled joe rosenthal way at the intersection of sutter and mason. but what he is not known for is turning the ordinary into the extraordinary, into the extraordinary, really. and this has been long overdue that joe rosenthal, who is a true san franciscan, be honored and acknowledged. i did not know he took that photo. what a cool bay area connection to an iconic photograph. joe rosenthal died in 2006 at the age of 94. it really is an unforgettable photo. well deserved for sure. vianey arana he is talking about that rain that's coming. that's happe

bay area. let's walk you through this again. the tsunami alert anywhere from southern oregon all the way into the san francisco bay area. if we were to see any kind of wave action, the way the golden gate bridge is structured, it would predominantly hit the emeryville area and also into santa cruz. and this is why the national weather service did issue that tsunami alert all the way into davenport, just ten miles northwest of santa cruz. but since then, we've seen over 200 aftershocks, and we have felt them mainly around this area right here. that encompasses the eureka area into fresh water and of course, into fortuna and also in ferndale. and you know what? we're going to fill these sizable aftershocks for days to come. and for the most part, many of these have been over 4.0. keep in mind, we do have right here three different plates towards the extreme northern portion of the state of california. here you have the san andreas fault and it kind of jogs, takes a left bend, turn right around cape mendocino and this is the most active structure area for earthquake activity in the entire united states of america. so it's n

in san francisco, robert honda, nbc, bay area news. well, speaking of strikes, you may find it harder to get your holiday peppermint mocha. more starbucks stotores have joined e strike. employees at the store on mckee road in san jose hit the picket lines today. they joined walkouts that started last week and has been growing across the country ever since. the union, representing baristas at 535 locations, is seeking higher pay, better benefits and additional staffing. strikes began after talks between starbucks and the union hit an impasse. starbucks promised that it would, in good faith with us, resolve its unfair labor practices, its illegal offenses against its unionizing workers. it has yet to go and follow through with its promises in good faith. and that is why we are out here today. we are angry. we have exhausted all of our options. striking is t final option that workers are given. starbucks released a statement saying in part, quote, only around 170 starbucks stores did not open as planned, with over 10,000 company operated

san francisco? tonight we're learning new details about that possible tie to the bay area. our marianne favro is in san francisco with the new developments from his ties to a stanford program to his time living in hawaii. we're learning more about the man now charged with murdering unitedhealthcare ceo and completely out of touch. a combative and angry luigi mangione could be heard yelling to reporters and cameras as he was led into a pennsylvania courthouse today saying, quote, it is completely out of touch and is an insult to the american people and their lived experience. as the allegations unfold, we are learning more about the past few years of mangione's life, including his time in the bay area. stanford university confirms that in 2019, mangione was hired for a few months as a head counselor with their pre collegiate summer program for high school students. on a linkedin page that appears to be mangione's. it says he also designed lesson plans and taught artificial intelligence. it also says he supervised other counselors at the program headquartered at this building

zenni is charged with murdering cash app co-founder bob lee last april in san francisco. nbc bay area's sergio quintana has been following this trial from the beginning. was in court for today closing arguments. sergio. there has been six weeks of testimony in this trial, and today the prosecution presented their summary of the case. they want the jury to find nima momeni guilty of murder in the first degree. this is a case that has lots of evidence, including videos of the defendant nima momeni and the victim, bob lee, together leading up to the stabbing and when it actually happened. one of those key pieces of evidence is a distant and dark video of the actual struggle between lee and lee, and a police surveillance video of zenni in a parking lot reenacting what happened to an investigator who worked for his first defense attorney, paula canny. using a powerpoint with videos, pictures, texts and court testimony, prosecutor dane reinhart told the jury nima momeni had motive, carried out the stabbing, and then actively tried to conceal his involvement. he also accused lee and his defens

san francisco. i'm sergio quintana, nbc bay area news. all right. thank you. sergio suspected killer luigi mangio could soon return to new york to answer to charges including first degree murder. late this afternoon, manhattan district attorney alvin bragg announced mangione had been indicted on 11 counts in the shooting death of united health care ceo brian thompson. the most serious charge is first degree murder in furtherance of terrorism. bragg says the killing was intended to evoke terror. this was a frightening, well-planned, targeted murder that was intended to cause shock and attention and intimidation. we have seen a shocking and appalling celebration of cold blooded murder. let me say this plainly there is no heroism in what mangione did. that's new york's police commissioner. addressing the wave of support for mangione, nbc news has learned mangione plans to waive extradition at a hearing on thursday. that means he'll be moved from a prison in pennsylvania back to new york city right after that. new developments right now in oakland, some difficult

san francisco bay oakland international airport. the goal was to make travelers aware of its location in the bay area, but the city of san francisco filed a lawsuit saying the new name would cause confusion for travelers. last month, a federal judge issued a temporary order blocking the oakland airport from using the new name. now, the port of oakland is appealing that order, claiming that sfo did not present factual evidence to stop the renaming. we have reached out to sfo and officials about the appeal. we have not yet heard back. also tonight, a heartbreaking update to a shooting at that elementary school in butte county. one of the kids critically injured during that shooting may never regain the use of his legs. the shooting happened at feather river adventist school last week. five year old elias wolford and six year old roman mendez were shot during recess. today, the family of elias said he hasn't moved his leg since an mri discovered that the bullet damaged his spinal cord. doctors aren't sure that he will make a full recovery. the family says they are so thankful, though, for the community's support. a story now from our inves

san francisco. terry mcsweeney, nbc bay area news. terry. thank you. g at this hour, a late night decisn that's left a lot of san jose families frustrated and upset. several schools in the alum rock union school district are officially set to close over the next two years, as the district grapples with a $20 million budget deficit. nbc bay area's jocelyn moran joins us live from san n jose. jocelyn, a difficult decision and one that a lot of bay area school districts are being faced with. right now. yeah, audrey, it's an unfortunate situation given the amount of kids that are being affected. the board tonight unanimously voted to close and merge several schools. parents bringing up a lot of concerns, including transportation, their kids mental health and the effects that this will have on vulnerable communities. the alum rock union school district has seen enrollment significantly drop over the last few years. many families have moved away due to the high cost of living. after tonight, we know several schools will be closing, others will be merging and

zenni is accused of killing cash app co-founder bob lee on the streets of san francisco. nbc bay area's sergio quintana has been covering this case from the start. he joins us live at the hall of justice in san francisco and sergio day one of deliberations under the belt. yeah, the prosecution presented their case, and then the defense has presented theirs. now it's all up to the jury to weigh it all. and today, the judge instructed the jury that they have to consider a single count of first degree murder against nima momeni with an enhancement of using a deadly weapon if they cannot reach a unanimous verdict on first degree murder, they can consider a lesser charge of second degree murder. and if they cannot reach a unanimous verdict on that, they can consider a lesser charge of voluntary or involuntary manslaughter. lead defense attorney sam zanganeh says there were some challenges trying this case as an out of state attorney. most of the defense team is from florida and that includes an argument he was trying to make yesterday about the alleged murder weapon and jurors not seeing the

rain for us across the san francisco bay area and it will be a series. the next one pops in.aturday saturday. probably the wettest day just before sunrise on saturday. you see widespread sunday. i think we get a bit of a break. so that's good news to get a chance to breathe a little bit. and then incomes monday's storm. so it's going to be quite an interesting series. it's nothing as dramatic as rain we saw a few weeks ago that were tied to a big atmospheric river. but still, we get pretty impressive rainfall totals after the first storm overnight tonight into tomorrow. we'll see maybe a half an inch of rain in livermore and in vacaville, you get closer to santa rosa, maybe 9 tenths of an inch of rain. and then we put in motion. you'll see over time it starts to improve an increase specially across the north bay by saturday evening are being pushing close to 3 inches of rain and in san francisco, one and 2 thirds inches pushing up toward 2 inches by the time we get through all that. so we've got quite a bit of rain in our direction. temperatures will drop a little bit. so if

we have moderate air quality in many parts of the bay area from san francisco to oakland up to sausalitosa, though, has good air quality. still. so does fairfield. so does redwood city. so what we need to get rid of this moderate air quality. this is the kind of thing where if you've got someone who's elderly or a child, you don't want to do a lot of outdoor exertion with this kind of air quality, but the way to get rid of it, there's one way. how about some brisk sea breezes? well, we've got some pretty brisk winds and west marin county, especially around the deck of a at 23 mile per hour gusts. you'll notice the wind bars indicate breezes will start to shift around. we're starting to see breezes now out of the ocean, which is great news, not will start to make things a little bit better to breed. you'll notice these are not strong winds except earlier in the day, but mostly below 10 mile per hour gusts. so at least this at moderate sea breeze. another way to get rid of that terrible air quality. how about some rain? that's what we get so far. high pressure is kept things. all the storm
