san francisco. i represent both san francisco and the san mateo. what i found is many individuals who used to live in san francisco do not anymore. they are in san mateo county. when you ask why, number-one, because quality of the public education that their kids were getting was not there. what did they do? they send their kids to private school. you can handle one child and public schoolone childtwo -- one child in public school, but two you cannot. the jobs were not there, so they had to move. finally, the cost of living, housing, those other variables we need to work on. we have to improve the quality of public education across the city, not just some areas or schools. you have to also provide additional money to developers to develop affordable housing. finally, we need the diversity of jobs. a variety of jobs that fit all qualifications. that is how you keep the middle class from leaving san francisco. >> thank you. it is great to be in a community -- think about it. 80% of people in san francisco do not have children. yet, when there is not a single item on the ballot this last election that got more votes than this. even if you do not have children, it is good that you are good stewards of the future. the children our our future. it is great that this community has rallied behind them. we are great to have that. we are going to build a state of the art school. that is pretty darned exciting. i am excited about that. i want to congratulate our new mayor, ed lee. it is a tough campaign, but we are looking forward to the school district and the county and city. we have always had a great relationship and want to maintain that relationship area we are ready to roll up our sleeves and continue the great work that we have been doing as a city and county, together with the school district. another item i want to mention is this will be the last board meeting for our legal counsel. get that smile off your face. reason that prop h was adopted to begin with is roughly 14,000 signatures from san francisco county voters that also, as i do passionately about children being able to attend schools near their neighborhoods. it makes sense. everyone automatically assumes that the child attends a school near their neighborhood or has that option in san francisco. as we know, from previous policies in different things with in government here, san francisco is special. san francisco is definitely special in this respect, that we have not followed suit with many of the major metropolitan cities and allow parents the right to automatically opt into their neighborhood schools. san francisco has been having issues with this policy for years. there are thousands of parents who have left the city, over 5000 since the 2000 census. since the mid-1960s, we have lost a little under half of our student population. this is one of the major reasons why. prop h is basically simply proposing that parents or children within certain neighborhood school areas are given the option of sending their children to the school in closest proximity to t

[applause] >> i am the gift that keeps on giving. i am sorry to come back up again, but jeff reminded me of a project we had during fleet week. that involved having military music throughout the city. one of our events was a high- school band challenge that took place in the golden gate band show at 10:00 a.m. on columbus day. six high school bands from as far south as castro bill, all the way of the peninsula to benicia, competing with the marine band. we had cash prizes for every band that competed. the winning and got $10,000. the second place that 6000. the third place cut $4,500. every other band took away $2,500. there is no money in these systems these days for instruments, uniforms, and it was the idea of the wife of our honoree co-chair, secretary shultz. shultz. she said, let's have this
