significant crack was found in a top to bottom investigation of the double-deck span which links san francisco and oakland. a senior engineer says that the crack was discovered on the eastern side yesterday and it was one of the eight steel pieces that helped hold up that side of the bridge. workers saw the crack while they were replacing one bridge section. you can see their progress here. the pieces of steel are about two inches thick. the crack was about halfway through one of them. you can watch workers installing that new section of the bridge live on the web, the 300-foot piece is scheduled to be rolled in today and weighs about 7,000 tons. it's going to be replaced in mid air. but how? well, one of the tricks the workers are using is dove soap. that's right, same soap you may use, using it to lubricate two parts of the section. >> the teflon pad is there, lubricated with dish soap. it's really slippery and slick, there's no friction and it can move. >> workers say there's nothing special about the dove brand and any soap would do. they shopped around and dove gave them the best deal. they'll use hu
