system in san francisco and in fact we recently passed legislation a few weeks ago to set new standard for improving our street light system, trying to invest in in it, but the public utility commission is underinvesting in our street light system which is key to public safety and quality of life in san francisco. so supervisor breed and i have been working on an amendment which i'd like to read an additional resolve clause basically providing that it is the intent of the board of supervisors -- of course we can't bind ourselves in the budget process -- the proceeds from this item that the public utility commission earns would be dedicated to reinvesting in street lights so would read as follows, further resolved that the board of supervisors intend in the annual appropriation ordinance to appropriate funds generated by these leases for the street light program and be -- and then it continues from there. so that's the amendment that supervisor breed and i would like to offer. >> all right, there's been an amendment offered by supervisor wiener, seconded by supervisor breed. without objection amendment is adopted and same house same call from item 18. that item is adopted unanimously.

i want to thank the department of public works and the san francisco public utilities commission and the staff for working with my office on a very important and ongoing issue which unfortunately may only get worse as the rain continues in san francisco. specifically, the geographic area of 17th and if fulson and actually a couple of blocks around that area is actually the lowest point in the city and county of san francisco and because of that it actually has on a yearly basis for as long as we remember, been flooded. and so we know that we expect additional rain in the next few days and so i will simply take this opportunity to thank the puc and to ask them and ask the mayor's office to please work with my office because there's a lot of frustration right now in the in the neighborhood. many homes and businesses have already been flooded and we expect additional flooding to take place and something as basic as simply having sandbags provided to the neighborhoods but i think we may actually be running out of sandbags here in in san francisco ultimately the city will have some respon

workers with the san francisco public utilities commission have been clearing one after another in hopes of preventing the street from flooding. in most cases they find leaves and litter but this time it was just plain dirt. >> [ inaudible ] you do the best you can. >> reporter: at lombard street and buchanan, workers cut up a large ficus that crashed on top of a parked prius and blocked all southbound lanes. >> the roots were up in the air as it rocked over the car. but it just went right across all lanes of traffic. >> reporter: ficus trees have been problematic in san francisco this rainy season. the weight of all the water on the already top-heavy trees causes them to fall. crews have been either eliminating or pruning them to prevent more incidents like this one. >> they were planted 40, 50, 60 years ago. we don't plant any more now. they really, many of them are not suitable for san francisco. they are very tall trees, big trees, and when they come down, they come crashing down hard. >> reporter: city workers are looking forward to the stretch of dry days coming up. time they say t
