i am the retired professor of music at san francisco state. i chaired the department for nearly 20 years. i joined the board of the community music center because i had taught as a graduate student at two sister schools in new haven and philadelphia, and i knew the benefit of this kind of a program for making music accessible to people who would otherwise not have an opportunity. i have seen it work so well here. we have the largest scholarship program i think of any of the schools in our community, and i was president of the board of community music center at the time that we acquired the house seven years ago. at the time, the board was very concerned that in the -- that they could maintain their scholarship program at the same time as having a capital campaign. we have succeeded in keeping that mission very firmly in our minds, at the same time serving more people and raising more money. >> clerk: thank you. >> thank you. >> president melgar: thank you. next speaker, please. >> hi. i'm not in opposition, but i came actually to just bring in

i'm san francisco state certified school bus instructor, driver and parent of special needs. i'm here representing all of our school bus drivers and union members here to support us. we are pleading with you to not allow this proposal to go through. to allow these nonconforming vans to transport our children. as a state certified instructor i want to show you briefly what it takes to get this driver through the process. it's a three-month training process to get a driver through. they have to receive 20-hour minimum classroom training out of the manual. then another 20-hour minimum training in a behind the wheel manual. so it's a minimum of 40 hours of training. we produce the highest highly trained california school bus drivers in the state. [applause] we are overseen by three agencies who are overseen by the department of education, the california department of highway patrol and the d.m.v. i would like to read a letter from our school safety coordinator, elaine michaels, who tests all of our drivers. she wasn't able to be here tonight. she says respectfully, council member
