[reading names] >> good afternoon. could i have the overhead please? my husband and i run the sailing program at the golden gate yacht club. the photo that i have of is just one day on the day with our free sailing program to san francisco high school students, courtesy of the bmw oracle team. i would like to be able to share these kinds of days with other yacht club high school's sailing groups are around san francisco bay. there are over 100 high school teams competing throughout california. we are in little bit behind the times of here, but i think we are well on our way to catching up and being able to compete not only with southern california, but the east coast and the world. california maritime academy recently sent one of their sailing teams to france representing the united states, and i think the future of sailing is with the youth, and i'm in favor of the 34th america'

. -- to the great city of san francisco.e extremely proud to be coming to this great city. we are going to tell you a little bit more about what the america's cup coming to the city will really mean. i think it is right to say that we stand on the edge of an event that will provide enormous drama and theater over the next three years and add to the rich history of the america's cup. in a way, it is a gorgeous marriage between a great event and a great city. we know that the city of san francisco will embrace this america's cup like none other before. like the mayor said, it's likely to bring in something in the region of 10 million visitors from outside of the city to enjoy this event. this is something really special and really big. and this is one of the reasons why. please take a look at the screens. this is truly unique in the history of the america's cup. the ability to stage the entire race in the harbor in view of hundreds of thousands of spectators lining the shores in addition to millions of people on television all

i was the project architect for the renovation of san francisco. my background has given me a detailed understanding of the technical complexities and challenges that must be addressed in carrying out successful preservation projects. from how to achieve structural and seismic upgrades to sustainable principles and sustainability. i have been involved for many years in a nonprofit organization focused on the recognition and preservation of the important works of the modern movement i have been involved as an advocate as well as recognizing some of the lesser-knowns historic buildings. i think it is important that the historic preservation commission have a balanced approach to preserve important landmarks and recognizing that success will preservation allows for change as well as the city lives in the gross. -- and grows. i have also tried to be very proactive in our approach to preservation. this pro-active approach has included renovations, a planning code, working with the planning department so that when properties are in this city, they unders

he has been serving the san francisco -- the people of san francisco for the past 18 years. there are many reasons to support the candidacy of mike hennessey and i would like to thank him personally for being able to do this. the job for the interim mayor will be an extremely daunting one. so, this is not a little thing to agree to sit and take that post for 10 months. i would also like to thank mr. lee. the fact that he has also put himself forward speaks highly of mr. lee. as mentioned, he was the director of purchasing, the director of the department of public works, he was the director of the human rights commission. he has worked in almost every area of san francisco government. he has overseen our capital plan. bandwidth he oversees -- he oversees the city's disaster recovery and response. this is a very important issue in district two and 10. he has worked on government efficiency and reducing the size of government. this is something that i used to do at the federal level. paul -- i will be supporting the nomination of mr. lee. in a time of budgetary restraint, it is

the mayor of san francisco. in 2007, the percentage was below 20% of san franciscans. fewer than one in five voted for the mayor. but we here have the opportunity to basically do our best to way where our constituencies are or our districts are and make an informed decision that i think will take san francisco to a place better than we can do through the system of voting, even as we experiment with our systems of voting and partial public financing of mayoral contests and a supervisor races. colleagues, i would recommend that we here at the public -- hear out the public, make nominations based on what we have heard, not just in today's public comment but all the public comment we have ever heard in our district and around the city, and do the best we can for the city and county of san francisco. president chiu: at this time, unless any other colleagues would like to speak, let me open to public comment. members of the public who wish to speak on this topic, please step up. each member of the public shall have up

i spent a bowl of my life dealing with san francisco history. i was on the historic preservation commission back in the 1960's. i am the founder of the easy a historical society. i want to say that in the 20 years that i have known rich john's, i placed him in the pantheon of individuals who are not academic historians but have tremendous knowledge and passion for san francisco history. his involvement with the san francisco or historical society has been extraordinarily important. he has also delved into various aspects of the city. he stands very much in the great tradition of non-academic historians. people like oscar lewis and so forth. i feel very strongly that he is not only qualified, but fulfills the criteria mentioned in the charter. >> welcome to our two new members of the board. i'm ellen schumer, i'm chair of the city hall preservation advisory commission. richard and i have known each other a very long time. when i was sitting at my desk, i started to go through a copy of the dictionary. it said, scholar. with richard johns, we have

leadership and service to the san francisco bay area. the many contributions of latinos reflect america's diversity, our rich heritage and a promising future. hispanic americans will continue to add to our national portrait, to our culture and to our history of progress. tonight we honor the waves of hispanic immigrants who have come to our shores and enriched our nation. many have been here for generations. others may have just arrived. with their determination to build a better future and their commitment to safe family and community, we are all making america more american. this is the essence of our history, to honor the character of america. we must pass comprehensive immigration reform.
