early cell phone video captured a fast-moving house fire in san jose and the flames raced through a home on south 17th street near east san antonio a couple escaped after being awakened by a smoke debtor. firefighters worked quickly to keep the flames from jumping to other homes but there were two at ticks making -- two >> a huge poultry processing plant is shut down after a dirty discovery. amy hollyfield is outside a foster farms office in pleasanton with the details. >> there are concerns of job security with foster farms and some jobs in the bay area. this is the office for the design team. now they are facing a plant shut down. the usda shut down the livingston plant because of a cockroach infestation. this is one of the plants that was linked to salmonella outbreak in march which sickened hundreds. foster farms says no product was affected by the cockroach problem and physical inspectors fund the bugs four times over the past five months. consumers are concerned. >> people will lose their jobs because they will lose production. >> with infection and infestation, why bother? >>>

cate caugiran is in san jose. cate, the outbreak is so severe, treian tents have been set up at regional medical centers. >> reporter: yes, they have, they are going to be setting up tents and hopefully treating those not so critically ill inside though tents sending them home the same day hopefully. that is the intent. san jose regional medical center says this is just how bad it's gotten. the influx of patients of being treated for flu symptoms forced the hospital to set up four hospital beds in these tents next to the e.r. so far, the hospital says it's seen up to 70 more patients a day with flu-like symptoms and added extra staff to deal with the spikes. >> this tent we plan to see patients of all ages who present with flu-like symptoms. these are patients who we can hopefully see safely and quickly and discharge home. we'll save the emergency department for patients who might be a little bit sicker and require hospital admission. >> reporter: today there have been five flu-related deaths across the bay area.

breaking news in san jose. east san jose, police investigating a deadly shooting. it is the city's first homicide of the new year. it happened hours ago near 33rd and east san antonio street, that's just north of the highway 101 and 680 interchange. bob redell is live at the scene with an update to the investigation. good morning, bob. >> reporter: good morning. in the past 30 minutes the homicide detective with san jose police have arrived and focusing on a driveway a couple houses down here on the 1600 block of east san antonio where a man is lying dead. someone driving by around 1:30 this morning called 911 to report that he was in that driveway when the paramedics arrived he was unresponsive. they performed cpr. they were not able to revive him. he was pronounced dead making him the first person to be murdered in san jose in this new year, 2014. what make this is story a little odd is that residents actually heard gun shots about an hour to 45 minutes prior to that 911 call, they also heard a car driving off but for whatever reason, no one bothered to call 911.

the good news if you are waking up in san jose and about five miles around san jose the downtown area, you can breathe a sigh of relief. they have a suspect in custody arrested last night, suspected of about with 11 arson fires, possibly more. a couple of fires are still under investigation. you'll remember the fire department here in san jose as well as the police department have been investigating the situation as several homes in this five-mile radius were set on fire. investigators say this arsonist struck a certain type of house, wood homes on dark streets with poor lighting. he seemed to prefer homes that had porches or fences. we were on site of several of those fires you could see where they come up and lit something on the porch on fire, the fire climbed the side of the house. these neighbors were terrified. they would awake to neighbors yelling your house is on fire. some said they slept with one eye open so to speak. others patrolled the neighborhood. we went up to talk to them after news of this arrest, they said they were relieved. >> kind of happy for this happen quick,

breaking news in east san jose. detectives on the scene of the city's first homicide of the year, the shooting happened a few hours ago near the corner of 33rd and east san antonio street and that's north of the highway 101 interstate 680 interchange. bob redell joining us live from the scene with details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. the victim and the city's first homicide this year is in that driveway there where you can see the white fence lit up by the san jose police department's crime scene unit. detectives are processing the scene. based on what residents tell police they heard this man get shot around 12:30, 12:45. they heard gun shots, heard a car driving off. for whatever reason no one bothers to call 911. now we're talking 45 to 60 minutes later that someone driving by called to report the man lying in the drive way a few houses down. not far from where east san antonio crosses over 101. the man, an adult, possibly in his 20s, had been shot at least once, was unresponsive, paramedics tried to

. >>> to the breaking news, firefighters are battling a house fire in san jose. our reporter is at the seen on 17th street near east santos. -- east san antonio? >> it has been busy for firefighters. i will let you look at the house that was oned this morning. the firefighters have to continue to go through the house and make sure there are no hotspots. this was a difficult firefight because of the age of the home build in 1907 and recently remodels. file fires say a couple was sleeping in their bedroom in the back of the house and one her the smoke alarm. flames were at the front entry way and driveway. they escaped to the back of the property and firefighters say the home was made of old wood with two at ticks so it was difficult to put out all of the flames. there was a lot of water on the fire. the basement was filled with a foot of water, rather, 2' of water. the next door neighbor's house was threatened. the fire broke some windows and peeled some paint. 17th street is blocked off. firefighters expect to be on the scene for the next couple of hours as they g

the regional medical center here in san jose borrowed the triage tent from the san jose fire department to begin treating a dramatic influx of flu patients. now, since last week, 50 to 70 patients have been coming in per day according to doctors presenting the symptoms of the h1n1 virus also known as the swine flu. >>> reporter: >> we wanted to be able to treat these patients quickly and safely and also separate these patients from some of those emergency department patients that don't have flu symptoms. so we have opened this tent and in this tent, we plan to see patients of all ages who present with flu-like symptoms. these are patients who we can hopefully see safely and quickly and discharge home. we'll save the emergency department from patients who might be a little bit sicker and require admission to the hospital. >> reporter: now, this smaller tent only holds about 4 beds but tomorrow, the medical center here will begin rolling out a much larger tent and larger part of the parking lot to handle many more beds and have it ready. you know, flu season here in the bay area tends to

nbc bay area's kimberly tere's in san jose with the latest. kimberly? >> reporter: diane, fire crews are still out here at this hour. just a short while ago, they were spraying down the gutted restaurant, making sure any smoldering embers are put out. the four-alarm fire, which caused all of this damage, started just before 6:30 this morning. some workers were inside getting the restaurant ready to open when the chef says the wall started shaking. he walked around the kitchen, and that's when he says he saw the flames. knowing it was spreading quickly and beyond what he and his co-workers could handle, paquin ran across the street to a fire station asking for help, but by that time it was already too late, in a matter of minutes, fueled in part by grease in the kitchen, the fire took over and destroyed the building. multiple sections of the roof collapsed. >> we've all been here, you know? i've been there 17 years. these other guys 20 years. i mean, it's our life, you know, it's -- i don't know what i'm going to do now. >> reporter: this was a neighborh
